Marge suspects she might be pregnant again, so she goes to the doctor to find out for sure. While Homer waits anxiously for the results, Bart and Lisa ask what's wrong, and quickly figure out that she might be pregnant. When Bart asks if Homer was this upset when Marge was first pregnant, Homer starts telling the tale of how Marge got pregnant with Bart, and the marriage that followed...

It's 1980. Homer is working part-time at the local mini-golf course, and Marge is still living with her mother and sisters (who still disapprove of their relationship). After a successful date night where they see ''TheEmpireStrikesBack'' and get buzzed on champagne, the two get intimate. Naturally, some time later, the two find out she's pregnant.

Homer, on the advice of his father (who points out he's probably never going to do any better), proposes to Marge, and she accepts. The two don't have much money, however, so they get married in a Vegas-style wedding chapel and Homer moves in with Marge. Even with this bit of saving, they still can't afford to buy everything they need for the baby. Homer applies for a position at the new nuclear power plant, but fails to get the job. Homer tries over and over again to get a decent job, but nothing works out and all the unpaid bills start to catch up to the newlyweds. Late one night, Homer leaves Marge's family's place, leaving a note saying he's going off to find a decent job, won't return until he's made a decent man of himself, and will send money for the baby.

Later, Patty and Selma notice Homer working at a local greasy fast-food joint, but decide not to tell Marge, who's in a deep depression over Homer's departure. Finally, after seeing how much Marge misses him, Selma spills the beans about where Homer's working. After the two emotionally reunite, Homer decides to march over to the nuclear plant and ''demand'' they hire him. Mr. Burns is impressed by Homer's attitude, and hires him right away. Homer runs to tell Marge, but finds out she's at the hospital. Homer makes it just in time to witness the birth of Bart.

As present-day Homer finishes his story, he tells his kids how much he and Marge are thankful for them. Just then, Marge returns home, saying that her pregnancy was just a false alarm. [[HypocriticalHumor The two high-five in celebration]].
