** Varrick tries to scale up his EMP, but the Colossus uses spirit power and isn't affected.

* FridgeHorror: If Lin was able to go to the prison to get Hiroshi, then that would mean that ''none of the prisoners were evacuated'', being left to the mercy of Kuvira's army.

* EpicFail: Kuvira's attempt to kill the protagonists instead only manages to injure Baatar Jr., the only person in the group she actually cares for. This also turns him against her to help the heroes.

* DeathEqualsRedemption: Hiroshi tells Asami he loves her and lays the groundwork to be forgiven completely, but by the only way he's fully vindicated is by allowing himself to die at the hand of the Colossus.

* CrazyPrepared: The airbenders' initial plan of covering the Colossus' view ports with paint fails because Kuvira has water jets installed on the windows just in case.
** She's also made it more flexible than a human in order to reach spots an attacker might latch onto and covered the outside with Platinum to keep metalbenders from damaging it.

* GoryDiscretionShot: After Hiroshi ejects Asami from the mecha, we see the Colossus slam it's hand down on the mecha, and then the ruined suit fall away.

* NoPlansNoPrototypeNoBackup: Subverted, Asami has a couple prototypes of the flying mecha at her office.
* NoSell: The Colossus has a platinum shell to stop metalbenders, and is powered by a giant spirit cluster which renders it immune to EMP.

* ShipSinking: It seems Kuvira ruined her and Bataar Jr.'s relationship when she fired the spirit weapon on his location.
* StylisticSuck: Wu's singing, which is terrible but manages to calm the badgermoles. Mako's grandmother seems to like it though.

* TheBeastmaster: Wu, who manages to use his singing to get a pair of badgermoles to help dig a tunnel for the remaining evacuees to escape through ([[StylisticSuck much to the dismay of the evacuees, who hate the singing]]). He even gets them to take out three mecha-suits that followed them!

* GoreyDiscretionShot: After Hiroshi ejects Asami from the mecha, we see the Colossus slam it's hand down on the mecha, and then the ruined suit fall away.

** Later on, Hiroshi gets the idea to infiltrate the mech and attack it from the inside, damaging its weaker inner mechanisms. To this end, Asami and Varrick's hummingbird suits are outfitted with plasma cutters to get through the platinum shell.

* ShoutOut: The battle between the airbenders and the Colossus looks a lot like battles in Anime/AttackOnTitan

** Badgermoles will do what you want if you sing to them.

* MusicSoothesTheSavageBeast: Prince Wu sings to a pair of badgermoles stolen from the zoo, which then do his bidding and create a tunnel for the civilians to escape. They also take out three mecha-suits for him.

* AttackItsWeakPoint: Hiroshi says if they can disconnect the core and/or Kuvira's control from the head of the colossus, they can stop it. To do this they have to use plasma cutters to get inside the platinum shell.
* TheBeastmaster: Prince Wu with badgermoles, which he uses to try and help get the final evacuees out. And later take out some mecha suits.
* CrazyPrepared: The airbenders' initial plan of covering the Colossus' view ports with paint fails because Kuvira has water jets installed for the windows in case of such situations.
* ComicallyMissingThePoint: Teased but averted, Varrick seems like he's comparing Zhu Li to an ostrich-horse he had as a kid, but he's trying to explain that he's sorry he never really appreciated her.
* {{Determinator}}: The heroes pull out all the stops to try and beat the Colossus, but it just keeps coming.
* {{EMP}}: Varrick makes a massive one to take out a swath of Kuvira's army. It doesn't work on the Colossus, which is spirit-vine powered.

* [[ImplacableMan Implacable Colossus]]: The giant mech just keeps on going through lava, bindings, ice immobilization, buildings dropped on it, air attacks, and [[ArsonMurderAndJaywalking the view port being obscured.]]

* GenreSavvy: even though Kuvira could have reasonably expected the explosion to kill the protagonists (not accounting for PlotArmor, of course), she nonetheless still goes to inspect the wreckage herself to make sure there were no survivors.
