Every year, the hospital's team chooses someone to play the Father Frost[[note]]Santa-like figure[[/note]], to bring happiness to everyone else (Bykov, who hates this holiday, considers this position to be a punishment). But, ironically, it turns out that it's ''Bykov'' who would play his role this year! He, of course, tries to refuse, but no one agrees to replace him: everyone except for Bykov have played this role several times before (even Kupitman did, five times!), and Bykov can't drop his duties on anyone else. But Bykov isn't so easy to force to do anything, and he just assigns his ex-interns to do everything by themselves, dressing Semyon as a talking deer, Phil as "Snegurochka" [[note]] Father Frost's granddaughter; "sneg" means "snow" in Russian[[/note]] and Gleb as a snowman (with improvised paper "bucket" on the head and fake carrot for a nose), ignoring that Semyon needs to leave early to help Olga -- and that the Father Frost is the main star of the whole event. The friends tries to do the job put on them by Bykov, but constantly hears complaints about Father Frost's absence.

Kisegach learns that Bykov dumped his job on the other people, and she angrily calls him -- but he confronts her about electing him into this role by cheating (the box contained ''only'' Bykov's name). She admits it, but states that he leaved them no choice, and, besides, he himself used the same method on Kupitman the previous year, so he well-deserves it. Anastasia asks Bykov just ''why'' he hates New Year so much, and he tells her a short, but meaningful story of disappointment and betrayed expectations. But the story sounds too childish, and she orders him to tell the ''real'' reason. Bykov states that the "real" reason is that he was beaten by the gang of thugs dressed as the Father Frost, who then killed both him and Kupitman. Bykov states that it's a "metaphor", but then just admits that he has no excuse to hate New Year: he just does. But Kisegach realises that Bykov just had a bad prior experience with it, and needs help to experience the ''good'' holiday for once.

Kupitman has planned to celebrate New Year with his new girlfriend, but she suddenly reconciled with her husband, despite previously kicking him out, and now Kupitman is alone for the holiday. Anastasia agrees to invite him to celebrate together, with her and Bykov, but she plans for this "party" to be short and quiet, which is not what Kupitman wants. Kupitman asks Gleb wether they can go to a night club together once Gleb finishes with the task put on him by Bykov, and Gleb reluctantly agrees, despite feeling that the whole idea is a bit too bizarre, and knowing that Kupitman certainly only asked him after failing several other options. Kupitman then asks Phil what he plans to do; learning that Phil would stay in Russia for the first time, instead of visiting his parents, and would go to Red Square; Kupitman suggests to do it together. After collecting a list of opinions, he proceeds to choose which whom he wants to meet a New Year (no longer expecting his girlfriend): family dinner with Kisegach and Bykov; nightclub with Gleb; Red Square with Phil; or karaoke-bar with nurses.

Suddenly, Olga arrives in the hospital to check what takes Semyon so long, and gets angry when learns the ''real'' reason, only calming down when he explains that he was forced into it. Then Kisegach suggests them all to just celebrate New Year together with her and Bykov. When everyone refuses, she explains that this is really important: if they give Bykov just one normal holiday, he would stop hating it. They refuses anyway, and she just orders them on the threat of night shift. To Kisegach's relief, New Year goes well, with Bykov finally stopping acting cold, and celebrating with everyone -- only for Bykov to ruin the fun by his comments. But then Kisegach realises one thing: Kupitman is not with them. Where is he? Cut to now wasted Kupitman, awakening in his office. "You would live trough New Year just like you had met it" -- alone, drunk, in your office...

* EpicFail: When [[RashomonStyle Gleb tells Semyon how his work at police would really look]], in the ImagineSpot which illustrates it, Semyon manages to lose his sidearm in canteen, while Gleb and Phil, during murder's investigation, manages to leave ''thirty'' fingerprints on the crime scene; and when their boss informs them of this, he find out that they're already wasted, despite it being only 12 a.m.!

* FreudianExcuse: At first Bykov, states that his excuse to hate New Year is his terrible experience with disappointing gifts back when he was a child, but, after failing to convince Kisegach, he states that this was only a metaphor, and tells her the "real" reason (which makes even less sense). Ultimately Kisegach realises that the reason is just that every New Year celebration in Bykov's life was lame and boring, and thus he only associates it with negative aspects.
* TheGrinch: Bykov hates New Year, and never hides his distaste for it, up to and including [[{{Jerkass}} insulting people involved to their faces]]. Unfortunately for him, ''he'' would play the Father Frost's role this year. What Kisegach didn't take into account is that Bykov can just order his subordinates to do all work by themselves (which he does). After Bykov telling his (blatantly made-up) [[FreudianExcuse backstory with New Year]], Kisegach realises that the reason for that is just that he never experienced non-boring New Year in his life.
* JerkWithAHeartOfJerk: When in the end he gets asked how he liked New Year celebration, Bykov states that he sees all those people on work on daily basis, and despite all Kisegach's attempts, he still considers this holiday to be silly. Then he jokes about Kisegach being happy with prospect of cleaning up so many dishes tomorrow. This spoils her mood immediately.
* LargeHam: Bykov is already known for this kind of behaviour, but "[[ImagineSpot Japanese Bykov]]" combines his usual exaggeration of his interns' stupidity with Japanese mannerism and speech overloaded with metaphors.
* LaserGuidedKarma: {{Invoked|Trope}} by Anastasia and other doctors; since Bykov [[TheGrinch always mocks them]], they cheated to guarantee that Bykov ''would'' play the Father Frost this year, wether he likes it or not. Bykov is not happy when he finds out, but Anastasia believes that she has nothing to apologise for. She also states that she took idea from Bykov himself, who earlier used the same trick against Kupitman.
* MyNewGiftIsLame: Series of disappointing "gifts" was [[FreudianExcuse what made Bykov so hateful towards New Year]]. Ten-years old Andrey wants a kick scooter? He receives mittens. Thirteen-years old Andrey wants kick scooter? He receives sweeter. Sixteen-years old Andrey wants sex with his girlfriend? He receives kick-scooter. Anastasia calls him out on "silly" reason for his behaviour, and Bykov, after failing to convince her that this is serious for him, admits it to be a metaphor for his disappointment in New Year in general, since each time he expects something special and receives something lame. She still doesn't believe and insists on hearing the ''real'' reason.

It starts with three friends (dressed and "[[AsLongAsItSoundsForeign speaking]]" like Japanese) taking tea together... but then Gleb, once again, inserts Bykov, as their "sensei", who calls them out on their stupidity (in [[LargeHam over-the-top "Japanese-style" manner]]) and proceeds to beat them with nunchucks.

Turns out that there's a separate trope, New Year Has Come, which fits better.

New Year's Eve[[note]]Russians do not celebrate Christmas, but New Year is so similar in many aspects what they are almost interchangeable[[/note]], but Bykov, as always, acts rather grumpy. And everyone knows: "You would live through New Year just like you had met it"!

Every year hospital's team chooses someone to play Father Frost[[note]]Santa-like figure[[/note]], to bring happiness to everyone else (Bykov, who hates this holiday, considers this position to be punishment). But, ironically, it turns out what ''Bykov'' would play his role this year! He, of course, tried to refuse, but no one agreed to replace him: everyone except for Bykov played this role several times before (even Kupitman did, five times!). So, Bykov has no way to avoid his duties!

Meanwhile, (ex)interns discuss how they can leave early; Semyon needs to help Olga (with food, and with New Year tree), while Gleb... just wants to leave early. They were interrupted by already dressed appropriately Bykov, who, feeling offended by them laughing, punished them by forcing to act as his "helpers". He dressed Semyon as talking deer, Phil as Snegurochka[[note]]"Sneg" means "Snow" in Russian[[/note]], and Gleb as snowman (well, closest he could do: improvised paper "bucket" on the head, and fake "carrot" for a nose). And then... he just ordered them to do all by themselves, without him involving (completely ignoring the fact what his role is main in whole event).

Kupitman, who planned to celebrate New Year with his new girlfriend, was disappointed: she suddenly reconciled with her husband (despite previously kicking him out of their house), which means, Kupitman is alone for this holiday. Fortunately, Anastasia agreed to invite him to celebrate together with her and Bykov... but she plans for this "party" to be short and quiet, not something Kupitman wanted. Interns, meanwhile, proceed with their work, constantly fearing complaints of people being angry at Bykov not showing up, despite being main star of whole event. Semyon even starts regretting to not join police instead of medicine like his father wanted, but Gleb quickly assured him what police would have its own Bykov, not in any way nicer.

Anastasia called Bykov into her office to ask why he dropped his work on other people... but he decided to check the box with names for drawing, and learned what ''all'' the names in it were "Bykov". She agreed what she "cheated", but stated what Bykov leaved them no other choice, and, besides, she took idea from the Bykov himself, who previously used the same trick against Kupitman, so he has no rights to complain!

Kupitman tried to ask Gleb wether he can go with him (Gleb wants to go to night club after finishing with "New Year snowman's" task). Gleb instantly recognised the reason why Kupitman asked him (what this is his "plan B" or even "C"), but reluctantly agreed (despite whole idea of Kupitman in night club just seems to be a little too bizarre even for him). After another round of humiliating work (which was supposed to be Bykov's!), Phil remembered what he had a chance to become intern in Japan instead of Russia, and said what he stars regretting his choice back then... but Gleb pointed what Japanese could have its own Bykov, not in any way less tyrannical.

Anastasia asked Bykov just ''why'' he hates New Year so much, and he tell her his short, but meaningful story of disappointments and betrayed expectations. It didn't convinced her (sounding way too childish to being real reason), and she ordered him to tell ''real'' reason, or he wouldn't leave her office. Kupitman, meanwhile, tried to ask Phil what ''he'' plans to do this New Year. Phil stated what this would be first time he would stay in Russian instead of visiting his parents, and he plans to visit Red Square. Kupitman suggested to do it together.

Bykov's "real" reason for hating New Year turns out to be... him being beaten by gang of thugs each dressed as Father Snow, who then killed both him and Kupitman. Bykov against stated what this was "metaphor", but then just admitted what he has no excuse to hate New Year; he just does. When they refused anyway, she just ordered them, providing "alternative" for those who would still refuse: to stay on night shift. This argument worked much better.

* FreudianExcuse: At first Bykov stated what his excuse to hate New Year is his terrible experience with disappointing gifts, but, after failing to convince Kisegach, he stated what this was only metaphor, and expained "real" reason": him and Kupitman being beaten by gang of thugs, each dressed as Father Frost, who then killed him and Kupitman; of course, this was metaphor, too. After this he tried to explain what he just considers New Year to be completely lame and useless "holiday", which actually made Kisegach realise ''why'' he hates it: he never had actually good New Year experience in his life, and so can only associate it with negative aspects.
* TheGrinch: Bykov hates New Year, and never hides his distaste for it, up to and including [[{{Jerkass}} insulting people involved to their faces]]. Unfortunately for him, ''he'' would play Father Frost's role this year. What Kisegach didn't too into account is what Bykov can just order his interns to do all work by themselves (which he did). Even if he has an FreudianExcuse, we never learn it; while Bykob stated his motif for hate, it can't provide even that much of excuse.
* JerkWithAHeartOfJerk: When in the end he was asked how he liked New Year celebration, Bykov stated what he sees all those people on work everyday, and despite all Kisegach's attempts, he still considers this holiday to be silly. This spoiled her mood immediately.
* LargeHam: Bykov is already known for this kind of behaviour, but "[[ImagineSpot Japanese Bykov]]" combined his usual exaggeration of his interns' stupidity with Japanese mannerism and speech overloaded with metaphors.
* LaserGuidedKarma: {{Invoked|Trope}} by Anastasia and other doctors; since Bykov [[TheGrinch always mocks them]], they cheated to guarantee what Bykov ''would'' be new Father Frost, wether he likes it or not. Bykov was not happy when he found out, but Anastasia considered what she has nothing to apologise for. She also stated what she took idea [[HoistByHisOwnPetard Bykov himself, who earlier used it against Kupitman]].
* MyNewGiftIsLame: Series of disappointing "gifts" was [[FreudianExcuse what made Bykov so hateful towards New Year]]. Ten-years old Andrey wants kick scooter? He received mittens. Thirteen-years old Andrey wants kick scooter? He received sweeter. Sixteen-years old Andrey wants sex with his girlfriend? He received kick-scooter. Anastasia called him out on "silly" reason for his behaviour, and Bykov, after failing to convince her what this is SeriousBusiness for him, admitted it to be metaphor for his disappointment in New Year in general, since each time he expects something special and receives something lame. She still didn't believed and insisted on hearing ''real'' reason.
* AnOfferYouCantRefuse: When Kisegach offered interns to celebrate New Year with her and Bykov, everyone refused. Then she reformulated it: they may celebrate New Year with her or Bykov... or stay on night shift in the hospital. Everyone agreed on her first option.
* RashomonStyle: All interns tried at certain points
** Lobanov, angry at Bykov for being left to do ''Bykov's'' work for him (while he wanted to leave to help his wife), tried to imagine what would change had he become policeman instead of doctor, like his father wanted. In his imagination it was complete freedom to do everything he wanted and drink with Gleb and Phil (in this ImagineSpot they were his subordinates). Gleb then tell him how things would work "for real"; very same ImagineSpot then continues, with ''Lobanov's boss'' (played by Bykov, obviously) appearing and tearing them new one.
** Before even becoming Bykov's intern, Phil had a choice between Russia and Japan, and, after another humiliating visit to people ''Bykov'' was intended to visit instead of them, he tried to imagine his life in Japan instead of Russia. It started with three friends (dressed and "[[AsLongAsItSoundsForeign speaking]]" like Japanese) taking tea together... but then Gleb, once again, inserted Bykov, as their "sensei", who called them out on their stupidity (in [[LargeHam over-the-top "Japanese-style" manner) and proceed to beat them with nunchucks.
** Gleb then imagined the only possible way Bykov may not be his boss -- with Gleb as Russian president, doing annual New Year speech on TV. When he [[TemptingFate said what by no means Bykov can spoil this]], Lobanov showed him (rather bizarre) scenario in which Bykov, as Gleb's speech-writer, called him out on deviating from scenario, and forced to reshoot whole speech.[[note]]This also mocks President's once-per-year speech, which supposed to be done ''live''.[[/note]]
* ShaggyDogStory: After spending whole day trying to find "best" option to meet New Year, Kupitman missed every single one and become wasted in his office, completely alone. He realised it too late to change anything.
* SkywardScream: Kupitman's reaction when he remembered what "you would live New Year just like you had met it" -- with him meeting it being alone, wasted and on work. Also combined with BigNo.
* TheSlacker: Bykov is forced to play Father Frost today (giving people their presents, while staying in-character), but instead he dropped all this on Gleb, Semyon and Phil (whom he clumsily dressed in something vaguely related) replacing him. Everyone whom they visited reacted on Bykov's absence negatively.
* UndesirablePrize: While Anastasia (and almost everyone else) considers playing Father Frost to be genuine honour, Bykov considers this to be punishment instead. He didn't even tried to hide his real feelings when he was presented during discussion of upcoming event, to everyone's irritation. Predictably, during random draw it turns out what ''Bykov'' would play him this year. He, of course, tried to refuse, but no one agreed to replace him, stating what he is last one who never tried.
