* ThePowerOfFriendship: Reflecting on Geordi's apparent death:
-->'''Data:''' I never knew what a friend was, until I met Geordi. He spoke to me as though I were human. He treated me no differently from anyone else. He accepted me for what I am. And that, I have learned, is friendship.

** Considering the events of ''[[Recap/StarTrekTheNextGenerationS5E14Conundrum Conundrum]]'', it seems Riker's unrevealed funeral speech and Ro's interest in it are {{foreshadowing}} a possible future romance between the two. However, since Ro only appears in two more episodes after this one, no such plot development [[AbortedArc ever happens]].

The ''Enterprise'' receives a distress signal from a Romulan science ship, so Picard sends an away team led by Riker to help them. The Romulans are surprised by their arrival, but relieved to be helped. Geordi discovers that some equipment needs to be replaced, so he and Ro transport back to the ''Enterprise'' to replicate the parts. However, they fail to materialize on either the ''Enterprise'' or the Romulan ship, and after several attempts, Picard is led to the conclusion that their comrades are dead.

However, Ro wakes up in a corridor, puzzled by how nobody notices her, so she heads to sickbay, but the door doesn't open for her. She waits until Captain Picard enters to talk to Dr. Crusher, who's filling out the death certificates for herself and Geordi. She still tries futilely to get everyone's attention before Picard walks straight ''through'' her.

Ro finds Geordi in Engineering, also confused over not being noticed. They soon realize they're able to pass through anything except each other. Ro thinks they've died and are now ghosts, or Borhyas according to Bajoran belief, but Geordi has no intention of giving up on discovering what specifically has happened to them.
