Helping the grim wasn’t selfish. The “transforming” was His attempt to stop the destruction. It only failed because Sonic’s energy was needed to complete the prism. There is nothing selfish about keeping everyone safe. He only began purposely destroying when everyone was at the grim and battling, which wasn’t transforming the grim since that was just a battle move to help him stop the decaying because the only way to the decaying was to get Sonic’s energy, which the others weren’t going to let him have. As implied by the other portals being mostly still together, Nine only increased the decaying in the grim.
