* DarkerAndEdgier: This chapter gets a bit darker and more violent than others up to now in the series, or arguably from the main Pokémon franchise. Doom forces Twilight to solve the puzzle that opens the doors to the temple by thretening the life of Owlicious, and when the group fights back against Team Shadow several of the human characters get into physical fights with each other, which is rare in the series since it normally focuses on Pokémon battles.
* ADayInTheLimelight: Owlicious gets a bit more focus in this chapter. It opens with a flashback showing how he met Twilight, he is used as a hostage by Doom Raizer to force Twilight to open the doors to the Hidden Temple, and he evolves during the big battle.
* HoldYourHippogriffs: During Doom's MotiveRant of justifying Team Shadow's actions and goals, he claims there are worse people in the world that are allowed to do whatever they want because weak people manage to "Sneasel" their way into power.
