* ColdBloodedTorture: Mrs. Coulter interrogates the captured witch Katja by first threatening to, and then slowly removing, the springs of cloud pine that grow under her skin. What makes it worse is Mrs. Coulter's insinuation that the sprigs are connected to Katja's magical abilities, including flight, making it more akin to dismembering her. It's apparently even more painful than it looks.

** As Will has never heard of daemons before, Lyra has to explain the concept to him. She has trouble putting it into words however, as they are such a fundamental part of her world that she has never had to talk about it.
** The ending shows Lyra asking the alethiometer about Will, and it reveals him to be a murderer, from his killing of Thomas in the previous episode.

* AdaptationalWimp: Will may have fight training that he lacked in the books, but it's counterbalanced by ''lack'' of real-world brawling experience. Lyra and Will independently explore a new world, and end up meeting in the mysteriously "deserted" city of Cittàgazze. The Magisterium take action on past events. Mrs. Coulter interrogates a captured witch. Lee Scoresby embarks on a mission to locate Stanislaus Gruman. Serafina calls a meeting of witches, and is met by witch Queen Ruta Skadi.

!! Tropes in this episode include:
* BodyHorror: Those tree-like tattoos on witches' backs? They're not tattoos. They are branches of Cloud Pine that grow under their skin. They may or may not be related to their ability to fly. Mrs. Coulter tortures Katja by removing them with tweezers.
* LethalChef: Lyra and Pan try making an omelette for Will. They have absolutely no idea how to do so, having never cooked for themselves before, and end up cooking the eggs ''with' the broken shells.
* MercyKill: Ruta Skadi puts a knife in Katja's heart after she begs for death and a release of pain from Mrs. Coulter.
