Later, Yara and Theon come to Meereen for a royal audience with Dany. Tyrion reminisces mockingly over the last time Theon saw each other, [[Recap/GameOfThronesS1E1WinterIsComing at Winterfell years ago]]. They have brought a hundred ships. In return, Daenerys expects they want her to support Theon on the Iron Throne. He explains, however, that it is Yara with the claim, plus the rest of the situation. Tyrion tells her that with the former Masters' fleet, they may have barely enough ships to carry her army. Yara and Theon tell her of Euron's proposal, saying they only want to rule the Iron Islands whereas he wants all the Seven Kingdoms. Daenerys says their fathers were evil men who left the world worse, but they are different. They will support her as queen of the Seven Kingdoms, and give their raiding ways up. Yara agrees reluctantly.

Later, in his tent, Jon says if Ramsay were smart he'd stay inside Winterfell. Davos says he won't though, because then the other Northern lords would lose any fear of him and join the Starks. Fear is his power, so he can't have that. Jon says it's his weakness too, as his men don't like fighting for Ramsay. If they see the tide turning, they'll desert him. Tormund says it's his horses he fears, as he's seen what mounted warriors can do. Jon reassures him trenches will protect their flanks. Davos says they must let Ramsay charge them and make their center retreat, so he can be surrounded three ways. Tormund asks Jon if he thought Ramsay would really fight him personally. Jon says no, it was to make him angry so he'd come at them with everything. After they leave Sansa rebukes Jon for not gaining her insight while he drew up his battle plans against Ramsay, since she knows how he thinks. Jon admits his mistake. However, she does not know about battle, and can only tell him not to do as Ramsay wants. They argue, and Sansa tells Jon she will never return with Ramsay alive. Davos and Tormund reminisce about Stannis and Mance Rayder, hoping this till will go better for them. Jon goes to Melisandre, telling her that if he falls this time, not to bring him back. She replies that it is the Lord of Light's will she follows, and has to try as it seems to be his will. Davos walks to the remains of the pyre where Shireen Baratheon was sacrificed by her father Stannis, finding the burnt carved stag he gave her.

However, she does not know about battle, and can only tell him not to do as Ramsay wants. They argue, and Sansa tells Jon she will never return with Ramsay alive. He wonders how they can rescue Rickon, but Sansa says there's no way Ramsay will permit him to live. Davos and Tormund reminisce about Stannis and Mance Rayder, hoping this till will go better for them. Jon goes to Melisandre, telling her that if he falls this time, not to bring him back. Davos walks to the remains of the pyre where Shireen Baratheon was sacrificed by her father Stannis, finding the burnt carved stag he gave her.

On the next day, Jon's army assembles before Winterfell. Crosses bearing flayed men have been set on fire in the field to intimidate their forces. Ramsay comes forward with Rickon in tow. He draws a dagger and Jon starts forward, afraid he's about to kill Rickon. Instead, he cuts his bindings. Telling Rickon to run to Jon, he nocks an arrow to his bow as Jon rides forward desperately. Ramsay fires and misses. Nonchalantly, he nocks and fires another arrow without even looking. His third arrow also misses. As Rickon closes with Jon, the fourth arrow hits and kills him instantly. Seeing now Jon is about to charge, his army does likewise. They ride forward to a hail of arrows from the Boltons. Jon's horse is hit, and he falls off as it tumbles. The Bolton cavalry charge down on them. Alone, Jon draws his sword and prepares for a hopeless fight, only for his own cavalry to charge forward past him. The battle is joined in a frenzy. Ramsay commands that his archers fire, even when some will hit his own men. As the bodies pile up, the rest of Jon's forces charge in under Davos. Ramsay sends his infantry forward along with the Umbers.

The Bolton infantry surround them on three sides, then close in with their spears behind a wall of shields. Over the mound of bodies forming the last side come the Umbers. Jon's forces fight desperately to break out from the trap, but cannot. At last they charge toward the Umber side in hopes of escape. Jon is knocked down and falls under the press and nearly smothers to death before he can break free. Meanwhile, Tormund is locked in battle with Lord Umber, brutally beaten before at last he manages to kill him. With horns sounding, the Knights of the Vale charge in just when Jon's forces need is greatest. They hit the Bolton infantry in the rear, breaking the cordon, and flank them quickly. Defeated, Ramsay retreats in a fury to Winterfell while his army is routed. He closes the gates, thinking Jon does not have the men to lay siege. However, Wun-Wun smashes them down despite being filled with arrows, and Jon's army bursts in to rout what soldiers remain. Wun-Wun is killed with a last fatal arrow shot by Ramsay, who says he's reconsidered-a duel with Jon sounds fine. He puts three arrows into Jon's shield before he beats him into unconsciousness. The Stark banner is raised over Winterfell once again.

Sansa goes to visit Ramsay where is being held captive, tied to a chair. Ramsay knows he is going to die soon, but says that's all right-he's part of Sansa now. She tells him after this his name, house and memory will vanish. Then she reveals that the cages of his hounds are open, and they slink out. He says they're loyal, they won't harm him, but Sansa notes he starved them in anticipation of feeding them Jon. The hounds begin to tear at him, with Sansa watching for a moment before turning away with a smile on her face.

'''In the North''', Jon and Sansa meet with Ramsay Bolton. Ramsay condescendingly thanks Jon for returning Sansa to him. He tells Jon to surrender and swear loyalty to him as the Lord of Winterfell and Warden of the North. In return, he will pardon him for deserting the Night's Watch and the lords with him for betraying House Bolton. He warns Jon he does not have the power to take Winterfell, and says there's no need for slaughter. Jon agrees, there's no need for a battle. Instead, he challenges Ramsay to duel for Winterfell. Ramsay laughs at this, saying he hears Jon is the greatest swordsmen who ever lived. He doesn't know whether he'd beat Jon, but is confident that his army will beat Jon and Sansa's, since they have perhaps half his number. Jon agrees he has the numbers, but wonders whether his men will want to fight for Ramsay when they hear he wouldn't fight for them. Ramsay admiringly says Jon's good, but doesn't go for the bait. He asks if Jon will let his little brother Rickon die instead of surrender. Sansa asks for proof Ramsay has him, so they throw the head of Rickon's dire wolf Shaggydog at their feet. As he starts asking for their surrender again, Sansa warns Ramsay he will die tomorrow. Ramsay says he looks forward to having her in his bed again, and his dogs will love devouring Jon's men. Saying he'll meet them in the morning, he departs. Later in his tent, Jon says if Ramsay were smart he'd stay inside Winterfell. Jon reassures him trenches will protect their flanks.

in his tent, Jon says if Ramsay were smart he'd stay inside Winterfell. Davos says he won't though, because then the other Northern lords would lose any fear of him and join the Starks.

Terms of surrender '''In Meereen''', the Masters' fleet continues to bombard the city. Daenerys surveys the attack with Tyrion from the Great Pyramid. He tells her Meereen is strong, and thus the Masters' need to destroy it, for if a city is seen to succeed without them it shows they are rejected unneeded. Dany says she will crucify them, set their fleets on fire, kill all their soldiers and accepted.raze their cities. Tyrion, disturbed, reminds Dany that her father intended to burn down King's Landing. He suggests taking another approach. Outside they meet with the Masters, who offer them onerous terms of surrender. Dany says they have misunderstood-she is there to discuss their surrender, not hers. The Masters first scoff at this, until Drogon flies in behind her. Mounting him, Dany leads her dragons against their fleet, making short work of it. Grey Worm meanwhile tells the Masters' soldiers they have a choice: die for the Masters, or go home. They quickly flee, and Tyrion reminds the frightened Masters of their pact with him, which they violated. One must die as punishment for this. The two high-born Masters volunteer their low-born colleague. Instead, Grey Worm kills both high-born Masters. Tyrion tells him to warn his people what happened to them, if they ever have future ideas of taking back Meereen.
