Light remembers one of the rules of the Death Note is that when a person's cause of death is written after 40 seconds, it will happen. As a result, while doing his normal everyday routine at school, he is able to kill off criminals every hour. Chief Soichiro, alongside L, get the news of this and determine that Kira can control the time of his victims' death. While walking down the street, Ryuk asks Light how he plans to kill L. The reply is that he will let the police get to him. This is because while they may be working together in the surface, they're suspicious of each other due to Light's connection with the police and L's anonymity.

Meanwhile, Light helps Sayu with her homework. As their father arrives home from work , Light mentions to Ryuk that he has an advantage against the police. It turns out his father is the Chief in charge of the Kira investigation. Light is able to access the files on the Kira investigation from his father's computer.

What he does in response is going behind the taskforce's back and investigating some of their family members, including Light.
* ParanoiaGambit: Light knows that someone as smart as L is supposed to be would realize that Kira changing his tactics to run counter to police speculation indicates that Kira has ties to the Police, and that's exactly what Light is counting on; he wants L to become suspicious of the police and vice versa.
