Giles gets to a doorframe while Xander and Willow shelter under the stairs. Underground, the Master is [[FeedMe hamming it up]], before asking the Anointed One, [[MoodWhiplash "What do you think? 5.1?”]]

The next day, Buffy arrives at the library. She comments on the damage from the earthquake and reports that she killed three vampires the previous night, which concerns her. Giles is too distracted to care. Buffy goes to meet her terrible fate - biology.

Buffy, Willow, and Xander exit the very boring biology class. Xander shoos Willow away, then gets to asking Buffy out. Buffy turns him down. She pulls the "[[IDontWantToRuinOurFriendship I Don't Want To Ruin Our Friendship]]" card, but Xander guesses that the real reason is Angel. He walks off in a huff.

In the library, Giles is setting up a meeting with Angel when he notices Ms. Calendar in the door. She notes that he's wearing the same clothes as yesterday, inferring that he spent the night at the school. She brings up a list of various strange recent phenomena, the point of which is that an apocalypse is imminent. She also mentions an e-mail from some monk about a prophecy concerning the Anointed One. Giles tells her to contact the monk.

Cordelia meets with her boyfriend. She asks him for help with Spring Fling, then asks the same of Willow. Willow is distracted by Xander’s moping, and brushes off Cordelia with a yes to go investigate. Xander, it seems, is not taking his rejection well. He then suggests that he and Willow go to Spring Fling together. While Willow would normally be all over this idea, she doesn’t want to spend the night with him while he’s still pining after Buffy. Xander decides to go home and listen to country music (“The music of pain”).

That night, Buffy retrieves a stake from her locker. She turns on the sink, but blood comes out instead of water. She rushes to tell Giles, only to overhear him talking with Angel about the prophecy – specifically, the part where Buffy will face the Master, and die.

Words cannot do justice to the following scene. Suffice to say, Buffy doesn’t take this news well. She wonders if it’ll hurt when the Master kills her. She throws some books at Giles, then declares that she’s quitting. She throws the cross that Angel gave her [[Recap/BuffyTheVampireSlayerS1E1WelcomeToTheHellmouth back in the pilot]] to the ground and leaves. Before she does, she breaks our hearts with this line: “Giles, I’m sixteen years old. I don’t wanna die.”

Willow is looking at a picture of her and Xander. Xander is lying on his bed, listening to country music. She calls him. He rips his phone out of the wall.

Buffy is paging through a photo album. Joyce comes in, wondering what’s bothering Buffy. Buffy suggests that they go away for the weekend. Joyce brings up that the gallery is open on weekends, and that the dance is tonight. She then unveils an absolutely beautiful white dress, which she thinks that Buffy should wear to the dance. She brings up an endearing story about how she went to homecoming at college without a date, only to meet Buffy’s father. Buffy notes that Joyce had her whole life ahead of her.

Next morning, Cordelia tells Willow how her boyfriend didn’t show up when he was supposed to last night. She’s surprised that she isn’t mad, and actually thinks that it’s cute. They walk into the lounge, only to find her boyfriend’s body, along with three others, all obvious victims of a vampire attack.

At home, Buffy tries on her dress when Joyce rushes in to tell her that there’s something on the news about Willow. We cut to that evening, with Buffy in Willow’s bedroom. Willow is recovering from the shock of seeing the bodies. Buffy tells her that the important thing is that she’s OK. Willow: "I'm not okay. I knew those guys. I'd go to that room every day. And when I walked in there, it wasn't our world any more. They made it theirs. And they had fun." Buffy tells Willow to stay in that night. Before leaving, Willow tells Buffy “I really like your dress.”

The Master tests the invisible barrier. The Anointed One goes upstairs.

Ms. Calendar recaps the season. Giles is getting weapons out. She tells him that the monk has vanished, though he sent out a final message, referring to a Bible passage that has to do with a child leading animals somewhere. From this, Giles deduces that the Anointed One is a kid, and not the vampire Buffy killed [[Recap/BuffyTheVampireSlayerS1E5NeverKillABoyOnTheFirstDate earlier in the season]]. He declares that he will face the Master instead of Buffy. Buffy (who just showed up) disagrees. Giles and Buffy argue, and determine that neither will give in. Buffy knocks Giles out. She tries to come up with a BondOneLiner, fails, and tells Ms. Calendar to “think of something cool, tell him I said it.” She puts her cross back on and leaves.

Buffy, carrying a crossbow, sees the Anointed One on the lawn. He leads her down to the Hellmouth to face the Master.

Willow and Xander have arrived at the library, and are currently panicking. Xander is angry at Giles for letting Buffy go. Ms. Calendar is concerned about the imminent apocalypse, but all Xander cares about is Buffy. He says that he knows how to find Buffy, and leaves. The Anointed One leads Buffy through the sewers.

Xander shows up at Angel’s place. He wants Angel to take him to the Master. Angel points out that Xander doesn’t stand a chance. Xander pulls out a cross and tells him that Buffy thinks he’s human, and he can prove her right. They find common ground in that they are both in love with Buffy.

In the library, Ms. Calendar asks Giles where the Hellmouth will open. He realizes that he doesn’t know, and directs Willow to find out. They conclude that the most likely candidate is the Bronze, given the dance tonight. Willow and Jenny go to warn everyone.

Xander and Angel make their way through the sewers. Xander accuses Angel of looking at his neck.

Buffy arrives at the Master’s lair. She begins with some banter, then shoots him with the crossbow, but he catches the bolt. Buffy starts reloading her crossbow, but the Master vanishes. She searches for him, only for him to appear behind her, grab her by the throat, and knock the crossbow out of her hands.

Ms. Calendar fumbles with her keys. Unfortunately, it turns out that the vampires aren’t coming to the Bronze. They’re coming here. A bunch of vampires are headed their way.

Buffy breaks out of the Master’s grip, but he starts using his [[NewPowersAsThePlotDemands hypnotic powers]] to control Buffy, and bring her to him. He gloats that her death will enable him to break free. He drinks from her, then drops her face down in a pool of water. He then breaks through the barrier in a flash of light.

Xander and Angel see the light, and realize that it’s too late. They arrive to find the Master gone and Buffy drowned. Xander performs CPR and manages to revive her. She says his name. He welcomes her back.

Willow and Ms. Calendar are staring at the oncoming vampires when Cordelia pulls up in her car. They get in, and direct her to the library. Cordelia drives right into the school, leaving a rather large hole in the wall, parking outside the library. Giles wonders why the vampires are coming here. Behind him, a tentacle slithers out of the cracked floor.

The Master is on the roof of the school. He gloats about how beautiful the world is. In the Hellmouth, Angel and Xander help Buffy to her feet. Despite having recently been dead, she feels strong.

At the library, Giles, Willow, Cordelia, and Ms. Calendar continue to defend against the vampire onslaught. Willow and Ms. Calendar move some shelves in front of the stacks. The tentacle is closing in on Willow’s leg. A vampire grabs Cordelia’s arm. She screams.
As the theme music plays, Buffy, Angel, and Xander PowerWalk to the school. Buffy cooly decks a vamp that gets in their way. They reach the stairs to the roof. Buffy tells them to keep the vamps busy, and tells Angel to put on his GameFace. She leaves. Xander tries to strike a cool pose.
Cordelia bites the vamp that’s holding her. “See how you like it!” The tentacle wraps around Willow’s ankle, causing her and Ms. Calendar to commence screaming. The floor cracks, and a massive three-headed demon emerges. Giles breathes “The Hellmouth.” He attacks the demon with an axe.
The Master is observing all this from the skylight, and his gloating is interrupted when Buffy shows up. He points out that she’s dead – it was written. Buffy replies “What can I say? I flunked the written.” The Master starts with the hypnosis again. Buffy moves to him, and he grabs her throat again. “Did you really think you could best me here when you couldn’t below?” he snarls. Buffy says “You have fruit punch mouth.” He looks confused, and then she punches him. They begin to fight.
More fighting in the library. A wooden table breaks, leaving a large splintered piece of wood pointing skyward. Angel and Xander fight some vamps. The Master hams it up. Buffy snarks back. She grabs him by the throat and hurls him through the skylight onto the piece of wood. His skin and clothes disintegrate, leaving his bones behind. The vampires flee.
Everyone convenes. Xander tells them that Buffy died. They decide to go to the Bronze. Giles will not be dancing. We end on a shot of the Master’s skeleton.
