* ThisIsUnforgivable: After the Monk discloses the full litany of crimes he committed that led to so much death, the Doctor chastises him and then contemplates when he will ever be able to look past this affront and stops himself from saying "forgive", because he cannot bring himself to use that word. He quietly tells the Monk to leave, and when 5he Monk tries to speak, the Doctor blows a fuse and bellows at him to just go.

* BigBadWannabe: Played with for the Monk; on some level, he considers himself the 'hero' acting against the Doctor, but on the other he considered the destruction of Earth as a means of punishing the Doctor for his past losses, but the Monk himself proves incapable of accepting that he might be wrong about anything just because he doesn't want to admit that he is a failure.

* RageBreakingPoint: At first, the Doctor is patient with the Monk, and only a bit disappointed in him. But the Monk's confession of essentially helping the Daleks kill three of his companions and nearly slaughter all of humanity vaults the Doctor into so much grief and raw feelings toward the Monk that he blows up in his face. This, after a very restrained TranquilFury that quickly begins to show signs of breaking down from impatience and anger. By the end of the Monk's guilt trip, the Doctor is ''bellowing'' at him to leave, hurting to the point that he is screaming with anguish and in tears.

So, when the Monk is forced at Lucie's gunpoint to confess, Tamsin is absolutely horrified. [[Recap/BigFinishDoctorWho124PatientZero After the Dalek Time Controller was destroyed by the Doctor]], he was propelled back in time. The Daleks sent out a distress call, hoping to lure in a particularly stupid Time Lord. The Monk answered. He patched up the Time Controller, who went on to tell the Daleks what would happen in their future. And in order to prevent that, the Daleks [[Recap/DoctorWhoS2E2TheDalekInvasionOfEarth repeated their invasion of Earth]], and persuaded the Monk to sow the plague across the planet. But this time, their plan to drag the Earth across the universe was more elaborate: the Earth will now function as a plague planet, spreading the sickness throughout galaxies. The Monk helped the rebels, then the Daleks, and then, as the battle progressed, mostly just himself. Tamsin is sick with guilt from the revelation. It doesn't help much, as she's exterminated moments later. So is Alex, in a fantastic HeroicSacrifice.

The Monk reveals that he was the one who caused the Doctor to show up two years too late. And that he had feelings for Tamsin. The Doctor doesn't even want to hear it, and he sobs and roars at the Monk to get out. He and Susan try to decide how to go on living after all this. The Doctor wants to snatch Lucie away from the explosion at the last moment; Susan reminds him that he can't, and shouldn't, change history. With a hasty goodbye to Susan, the Doctor heads back into the TARDIS, where he plays Lucie's recording over and over, speaking along with it and filling in his own lines. Deeply traumatised and just a little off the deep end, he promises her that he shall come back for her, [[Recap/DoctorWhoS2E2TheDalekInvasionOfEarth one day, he shall come back.]]
