Katelbach and Gereon wait to meet the former’s source. Katelbach claims that his source is a skittish engineer who will panic at the first sight of trouble. He sees him – a man walking extremely awkwardly – approach, and as he goes to address him, a car drives by and [[SurprisinglySuddenDeath guns the source down]]. Katelbach is frozen in shock (clearly, his phone is tapped), but Gereon runs to fire several rounds into the back of the car, to no effect.

Gereon reports the death of the source to Benda, who is certain they will find the killers. Benda brings up Seegers’ connections to Nyssen AG, accusing him of using [[CorruptCorporateExecutive Alfred Nyssen]] as a front to import illegal weapons. Seegers is unfazed and supremely confident. Suddenly, Gereon remembers [[ChekhovsGun the customs documents]] given to him by Frau Behnke in the previous episode, and hastily looks them over as Seegers is bailed out by his lawyer. He finds [[CallBack Seegers’s clear signature fraudulently acknowledging the train full of phosgene as pesticides at the German border]]. They have Seegers dead to rights as a result of this evidence.

[[ThoseTwoGuys Henning and Czerwinski]] still cannot produce Charlotte’s whereabouts. Even Herr Graf, who the audience knows to frequent [[CrossDresser the more underground cultural scene]], can find no trace of her.

At the Moka Efti [[TheDon the Armenian]] [[AnswerCut has Charlotte hauled onto the butcher’s table]], giving her one last chance to cooperate. She surrenders, [[DramaticIrony now possessing the knowledge the Armenian seeks by sheer coincidence]].

[[DontCelebrateJustYet Zoergiebel, Benda, Geroen, and Graf toast their success against Seegers]]. [[ForeShadowing Zoergiebel puts a call into ''Reichspraesident'' Hindenburg]].

[[ForeShadowing Bruno whistles a familiar tune as he puts a rifle case in his car]]. [[PetTheDog He says a heartfelt, preemptive goodbye to his senile wife]].

Gereon visits his pharmacist once again, [[ForeShadowing who will no longer meet him in person]].

Otto waits for Greta outside Councilor Benda’s residence. She seeks news regarding Fritz. Otto informs her he didn’t make it, [[GasLighting giving her his “personal effects” – a knife a handkerchief embroidered with a loving message from his mother]]. Otto [[GasLighting blames Benda]], [[ForeShadowing calling him the “Jewish sow”]]. Greta agrees to do whatever is necessary.

Helga injects Gereon with his medicine, and he immediately passes out into a dreamlike state.

Bruno infiltrates the security detail at the opera house. He positions himself with his [[CallBack night-vision]] sniper rifle in the chandelier.

Gereon awakens after an abnormally long nap. Gereon notices when Moritz whistles [[Leitmotif a familiar tune]]. He also hears a radio broadcast mentioning Stresemann, Briand, and [[WhamLine Prangertag]], and suddenly realizes the plans of the Black ''Reichswehr'' conspirators. Gereon rushes to foil them.

At the opera house, the bell rings to signal the guests to enter the hall. A waiter brings his cart into the kitchen, where an assassin disguised as a guard retrieves a rifle case and perches himself in a lighting gallery.

Meanwhile, several trucks filled with soldiers position themselves in strategic locations.

Gereon is denied access by the security detail. He drops Benda’s name without success.

The opera begins, singing [[CallBack a familiar tune]]. The assassins load their rifles.

Gereon infiltrates via the fire escape, [[MuggedForDisguise knocking out a guard and donning his uniform]]. He spots the sniper in the lighting gallery, and moves to intercept him. Gereon does so successfully, but Bruno shoots the second sniper dead in the midst of the distraction intended as their opening to assassinate Stresemann and Briand. Bruno misses his shot on Stresemann by sheer coincidence. Gereon spots Bruno fleeing form the chandelier, and pursues. Gereon is apprehended by the obstructive police at the gate, however, before he can catch him.

The German flag on the roof of the opera house remains in place. The coup is called off.

Benda visits the arrested Gereon, ordering his immediate release. However, when they go to retrieve the body of the assassin, it is mysteriously missing.

Charlotte awakens in a very different, fancy bedroom from earlier, the door locked. The Armenian joins her. Charlotte informs him that the train will be returned to the Soviet Union and intercepted by the Black ''Reichswehr'' en route.

Gereon and Benda discuss the assassination plot. Gereom expresses confidence that Bruno was involved. Benda expresses relief that Stresemann has survived [[DramaticIrony (historically, he will be dead by the end of the year from a stroke)]].

The Armenian invites Charlotte to breakfast…with Toni. The implied threat is not lost on Charlotte. The Armenian lets Charlotte and Toni go freely. They run.

Benda assembles a major press conference for Seegers’s charges. Gereon reassures Katelbach. Just before Seegers is brought before the press, [[HistoricalDomainCharacter ''Reichpraesident'' Hindenburg]] arrives on the scene, and [[DiabolusExMachina steals Seegers away]]. [[GovernmentConspiracy Truly, the highest levels of the republic’s government really are implicated in the Black ''Reichswehr'' conspiracy]]. Benda has to dismiss the press conference empty-handed, leaving Katelbach and Gereon completely exasperated. Seegers exits amidst numerous questions from the press – Hindenburg has successfully suppressed news of the existence of a right-wing conspiracy against the state, and has ordered the train back to the Soviet Union immediately. Benda admits defeat – he, Gereon, and Zoergiebel are completely helpless to stop this chain of events.
