* Just like in canon, Evelyn’s parents gave her away immediately after they discovered she’s a mage. Her mother still sends monthly letters but it's only for duty, not parental concerns as those letters are basically reports and orders for her daughter to be good and keep staying inside her "prison". Evelyn’s actually somewhat grateful for that because by giving her away when she was too young to get attached to her family, she has time to adjust and get used to her ordeal instead of fighting against it and causing more dangers to herself later.
** The Circles also enforce this trope on their mages. When a mage gives birth (usually as a result of rape), the child will be immediately taken away whether it's a mage like its mother or not.

*This is implied as to how Ryuuko ended up in Satsuki's (mostly known as "Sis") care during the events of The Outside, as, apparently, their parents separated when the former was probably a toddler and their dad died. Some of what drives the plot is this trope as, Ryuuko is later taken from Satsuki's care and put into a home, social services trying to sort out where their mom is.
