The passage formerly quoted at the top of the page implies that there ''were'' real dragons, until they were exterminated for showing off a bit too much:

Apparently their language and beautiful and lyrical to the ear, but the one we see speaks a very different language so Dominic never gets to hear it himself. Plus, they're very rare, so if ever one has the opportunity to meet one is considered incredibly lucky.
