* Mycroft being menaced in a darkened room with a ghostly disembodied voice, followed by a MonsterClown. Yes, [[spoiler:it was all Sherlock's doing]], but ''still.''
** Your mileage may vary, but the clown and the little girl did ''not'' get any less scary when [[spoiler: you see what they really are: junkies dressed up in costume. Actually... they were arguably scarier.]]
* Moriarty's series of pre-recorded messages deserve an honorable mention. In an episode that's already got a chillingly mesmerizing villain in the form of Eurus, and a slowly escalating tension the moment Sherlock, John, and Mycroft set foot on Sherrinford, it's a little easy to forget the late consulting criminal... but then the moment things start to spiral out of control and it's revealed that the island prison has been compromised, alarms start to blare and a voice begins projecting over the PA system. At first it seems like a typical red alert, but then the phrases get progressively more random and weird, and it isn't until John lays his eyes on a set of television screens that Moriarty reveals himself in a manner much similar to how he turned up in the previous finale, only this time it's under much more tense circumstances. Talk about a MindScrew.
** The series of prompts that Eurus initiates during her little game are also quite disturbing in their own right, as the red tint that colors Moriarty's features during every recording adds to the jarring effect of his appearances.
* [[spoiler: [[AllJustADream Despite turning out to be a scenario playing out in Eurus's imagination]],]] the plight of the unnamed little girl on the airplane. Imagine being less than twelve years old and being the only one conscious on an airplane with no one piloting it, with no knowledge of how to land it and the only person there to try to help you being a complete stranger on the phone.
* Eurus. You'd swear that she would even haunt the nightmares of Hannibal Lector. She is shown to have the odd, almost hypnotic ability to bend people to her every will and has brought most of the management at the asylum she is being kept at to its knees. It's mentioned in passing that she successfully willed a worker there into shooting ''his own family''. (After which the man also [[DrivenToSuicide killed himself]].)

Young Sherlock wasn't just traumatized because Redbeard was killed, he was traumatized because he wasn't smart or fast enough to save him!]] Explains a lot, really.

** For her parents: your only daughter is a viciously dangerous sociopath with zero empathy, who attempts to ''incinerate'' [[spoiler:your youngest son]] and ''drowns'' [[spoiler:his best friend]]. She can't be reasoned with because she has no concept of right and wrong; you can't even try to stop her by outsmarting her, because she's cleverer than anyone who might try to contain her. Just living with her is an exercise in mind gaming, when you're never sure who she's manipulating (your spouse? Your other children? ''You''?) or why she's doing it. She traumatises her younger sibling so badly that his memories and personality are effectively rewritten, and you have to watch that happen. Eventually, your brother/brother-in-law has her taken away and locked up, and later your oldest child tells you that she's dead. Years later, you discover he lied: she's alive and as dangerous as ever, but she's still your child, and she's spent her whole life isolated and under constant surveillance.
** For [[spoiler:Mycroft]]: You've watched the nightmarish events unfold as your parents have, but you're a child yourself. You have to maintain the lie that your youngest sibling has told himself while being fully aware of the truth. When your uncle dies, you become your sister's keeper, with all the ShootTheDog decisions that that entails, and you decide that it's best to lie to your parents and claim that she's dead rather than locked up...so you get to watch them grieve her, fully aware that this is ''your'' lie and therefore ''your'' fault. Then, because you've royally screwed up, you hand her the opportunity to torture both yourself and your sibling all over again, and after you've both been thoroughly scarred for life, you get to tell your parents that you've been lying to them about your sister's fate for years.

** There's also the fact that he was clearly based off of real serial killers. H. H. Holmes is directly mentioned multiple times, and killed in a very similar way.
** A British philanthropist and TV star who takes advantage of people's trust and severely harms them behind the scenes, with some even silently complicit in his crimes due to his fame? Culverton comes off as an Expy of the BBC's Jimmy Savile, who after his death was revealed to have used his fame to commit hundreds of sex crimes while working for the BBC. The only difference is that Culverton is a murderer, not a rapist.
** He casually leads Sherlock and John [[spoiler:into the morgue full of the corpses of his victims.]] What does that say about the man?

* Where to begin? This may very well be one of the darkest, most horrifying episodes of the entire show's run.
* For starters, during almost the entirety of [[spoiler:Eurus' experiments]], there is [[NothingIsScarier no music whatsoever]].



* Moriarty breaking into 221B while Sherlock and John are out and [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=enIwRGc8XlM recording]] his whispered observations on a shaky video camera, then posting the whole thing to John's blog? * When Moriarty's team offers no defence at his trial, he looks up at John in the gallery and smirks. John is visibly upset by this. Sherlock described his standoff with Moriarty as "five minutes... I pointed a gun at him, he tried to blow me up." But for ''John,'' the ordeal went for ''hours''. He was knocked unconscious, unarmed, totally unable to defend himself, and he was the one actually wearing the bomb. He has impressive nerves, and considerable loyalty to Sherlock, to bring himself to be in court at all.
** The series itself never tells us what happened between John leaving the apartment for Sarah's and Sherlock arriving at the pool some hours later. John later blogged a basic outline --he was bundled into a car and knocked unconscious-- but most of the details are missing. It was clearly extremely traumatic for him; in terms of his blog, he posts that [[http://www.johnwatsonblog.co.uk/blog/01may he took some time away from guns and bombs and maniacs]] after that incident. In the actual series itself, the effect that being Moriarty's hostage had on him is hinted at earlier than the trial. When John intercepts Jim's text on Sherlock's phone, and tries to bring it to Sherlock's attention, he looks like he's about to pass out. Not a reaction we've come to expect from someone who developed a hand tremor because he ''missed being in constant danger.'' It's highly implied that there are some details of his hostage experience prior to Sherlock appearing that he's unwilling to share, because they are really, ''really bad.''
* Moriarty [[spoiler: pretending to be Richard Brook, a scared actor who was 'hired' by Sherlock to be Moriarty in an attempt to take Sherlock down. He's so convincing that he can almost (maybe even completely) make you believe it, that Sherlock is the bad guy.]]

Because he freaking ''means it.'' He's not thrilled that he thinks he's beaten Sherlock Holmes. He's ''suicidal'' because he thinks he's beaten Sherlock Holmes. As Sally Donovan pointed out in ''A Study in Pink,'' psychopaths get bored. They tend to commit suicide in prison because of it. Jim's realisation that he could [[spoiler:commit suicide to solve the problem of "staying alive" ''and'' scupper Sherlock's chances of beating him]] makes perfect, horrible sense.
** A less internal detail, but if you look closely [[spoiler:you can see pieces of Jim's brain floating on the edge of the blood.]]
** All this to prove just how TheUnfettered can get deconstructed.
** And it gets even better. This level of [[spoiler:realistic and utterly gruesome]] detail must have come from [[spoiler:Molly. She's a forensic pathologist, after all, it's what she does for a living. She probably "decorated" him herself, even. She has/had a major crush on him, and the more realistic she makes his "death" look, the more she is guaranteing she'll ''never'' see him again... And that she'll have ''lots of guilt'' whenever she runs into their grief-stricken mutual friends]]...
* John unknowingly [[spoiler:in the crosshairs of a sniper rifle. Sherlock's 'suicide' saved his life by ''mere minutes.'']]
* The idea of Moriarty [[spoiler: having his own kid's show. The guy has strapped ''bombs'' to children. He has poisoned children with mercury (symptoms include losing hair, teeth and nails, kidney dysfunction, itching, burning, pain, light sensitivity and ...you know... death). Not to mention the crap he pulls on adults. He's the storyteller on TV. Small children ''trust'' him.]] What could possibly go wrong with that?

It wouldn't be surprising if Series 3 mirrored Series 1's opening by showing us John reliving that moment in a nightmare.

In an episode that's already got a chillingly mesmerizing villain in the form of Eurus, and a slowly escalating tension the moment Sherlock, John, and Mycroft set foot on Sherrinford, it's a little easy to forget the late consulting criminal... but then the moment things start to spiral out of control and it's revealed that the island prison has been compromised, alarms start to blare and a voice begins projecting over the PA system. At first it seems like a typical red alert, but then the phrases get progressively more random and weird, and it isn't until John lays his eyes on a set of television screens that Moriarty reveals himself in a manner much similar to how he turned up in the previous finale, only this time it's under much more tense circumstances. Talk about a MindScrew.
** The series of prompts that Eurus initiates during her little game are also quite disturbing in their own right, as the red tint that colors Moriarty's features during every recording adds to the jarring effect of his appearances.

In the unlikely event that she did begin acting "normally," she's a master manipulator who can never be fully trusted, so even if she was genuinely "cured," there's no way you could know for certain and no way you could let her go free. In order to limit the atrocities she's capable of, your choices are limited to letting her live a life of solitary confinement and killing her. You'll never know if she genuinely loves you, or if you've just become one of her latest experiments.
