* The God damn Waterwraith. In concept, it shouldn't be weird or disturbing at all: a giant clear flubber-looking thing on stone steamroller wheels. But mainly it was the fact that it couldn't be killed. Or damaged. At all (at least not until the final level of the cave it's found in). And if you took too long on a floor, it would suddenly drop in out of nowhere and start chasing after you. The unearthly gargling noises didn't help things, either, nor did the fact that your ship freaks out when it first appears, yelling "RUN! RUN AWAY!"

* In the Forest Navel your ship's parts locator points you in the direction of a certain cave. After noticing there doesn't appear to be anything there you go in only for the beady long legs to drop from the ceiling and begin stomping around in an attempt to squash your pikmin. The music turns ominous, the pikmin can't be controlled by the c-stick because they'll try to attacks the legs which are the main weapon and can end up with your pikmin getting flattened.

** The Pikmin show a surprisingly dark capacity for revenge in this short too, as they descend on the Bulborb once it's died and start pummeling it so bad it's censored by a mosaic when they get off it. Sure it's mostly a case of CensoredForComedy but jeez!

** It gets even worse when you think more into it. Dweevils only replicate that which is latched onto them. So, let us ignore all of the firepower for a moment -- no, seriously. Because really, most of those tools aren't seriously even meant to be weapons in the first place. ...But then you add Louie. You add a human mind to it all. Now, you have one of the most massive creatures in the series not only armed more effectively than even the Waterwraith, but has the intelligence to use the tools to their full potential. Jesus, how badly would the ecosystem be thrown out of whack if this living war machine ever left the Dream Den?!

* The President's emails start out funny as he realizes how much of a hole of debt he is in but past the halfway mark they start to get a little sad with him having to run from debt collectors, having to be forced to live under a bridge, and then kicked out of that. Then there seems to be a brief HopeSpot where it seems the President manages to avoid the collectors for good. Only for his emails to turn extremely dire as he explains that the collectors found him and plan to drown him in the swamp if he doesn't immediately pay up. He then starts getting really angry at Olimar for being so slow but then starts pleading with him to come save him. And his final message:
--> The President: "I wonder how many days have gone by since I was captured by the debt collectors. Olimar... Louie... I'm almost done for... Repay...debt! P...l...e...a...s...e..."

** Speaking of the Distant Planet, the planet itself is called PNF-404, and players will notice the treasures collected are man-made items such as lipstick and bottle-caps. This also means that Olimar himself is tiny compared to humans but that raises the question, where are there people? In a populated city Olimar would be in danger of being stepped on or worse but there are no signs of any people other than the items, remains of buildings, garbage, and some still-functioning machinery. On top of that, the planet itself looks suspiciously like Earth from space. According to word of god, the Distant Planet is indeed Earth years in the future after Humanity has long since died out! And now the planet is dominated by strange and often dangerous creatures! Makes one wonder what really happened to humanity and whether or not there are any living humans left or they have left...

* The Armored Mawdad, the first boss encountered in the game. Resembling a cross between a lobster, a centipede, and a snake, the boss is first encountered in a rotting tree stump, right next to Olimar's first log entry...which says "to anyone who finds this, tell my son that I didn't make it..." Brrr. The foreboding atmosphere and scary-looking entrance to the Mawdad's lair don't help either.
** When you first enter the arena, it seems empty and desolate, until some wood fragments start falling off of the ceiling, and the camera pans around, revealing that the Mawdad was actually on the ceiling and watching the entire time!

** The baby Phosbats, encountered in the same dark cave, are less nightmarish than their parent and are actually rather UglyCute. That is, until they're exposed to bright light, and they start wildly thrashing in agony as their skin sizzles and smokes under the light, and upon dying their heads explode and their eyeballs pop right out of their sockets and roll on the floor. Ugh.

* The Sandbelching Meerslug is an enormous subterranean SandWorm that tunnels underneath the ground and occasionally surfaces to spit boulders. Not really too bad...until it creates an inescapable funnel of dirt, with its chomping maw directly at the bottom like a Sarlaacc. And when it's low on health, it creates a pit nearly as big as the entire arena.

* The Arachnorbs manage to be not-spider enough to not trigger arachnophobia, but Pikmin 3 introduces a new type that spins a web and will actually eat trapped Pikmin; even worse, the fact they spin their webs in places where your Winged Pikmin are guaranteed to carry items through means that if you don't deal with them first, your entire squad of fliers can be made to be at its mercy.

* The Dessicated Skitter Leaf, like its harmless cousin, pretends to be a dead leaf lying motionless on the ground. Except this one actually eats Pikmin, so sometimes if you're not looking carefully you might march your Pikmin straight into a death trap...

** The way the Bearded Amprat devours Pikmin, grabbing them in its forepaws and gnawing away at them foot-first. The Pikmin are very much alive and screaming as they're chewed up by this horrific hamster from hell...

** Though as an amusing bit of NightmareRetardant, once the Waterwraith loses its stone rollers it pretty much just panics and runs around like a headless chicken, then curling up into a terrified little blob as the Pikmin whale away on it. ** The best way to kill the swarms of larvae that she produces? Have her roll on top and crush her own children to death.
** The larva death animation is rather disturbing as well, as it screams in terror as its body slowly melts away into a yellow puddle of slime.

** It's home the Final Trial has rather unnerving music due to the creepy intro then leading to an uncomfortable happy sounding tune with some creepy bits sneaking in as if the song is trying to hide something.

* The Smoky Progg. Oh jeez the Smoky Progg. A nearly unstoppable DEMON FROG made of smoke (that leaves a trail of the same noxious smoke wherever it goes), who, upon hatching, makes a beeline for your Onions and TEARS YOUR PIKMIN OUT OF THE EARTH to disembowel them. That, and it's implied to be a larva of the already creepy Mamuta which has been mutated (and apparently pissed off) by you disturbing its egg. Its anatomy is perplexing to the point of it resembling a EldritchAbomination, and upon dying, the entire thing MELTS, leaving nothing but a small pearl.

** Mushroom Pikmin in general are incredibly creepy. They lose all facial features besides their eyes, which become white and soulless, with no pupils to be seen. On top of that, they admit a creepy, almost child like giggle when walking around the Puffstool, and when attacking Olimar, they sound almost gleeful to be doing so. This can't but make one wonder if it's the effects of the spores, or if the Pikmin have darker feelings towards Olimar than what they seem...
* The Nova Blaster part from the first game. "What could you possibly mean," you ask? That thing is capable of blasting through and destroying STARS. It's a doomsday device. And it's the size of a BEAN CAN. Sweet dreams.
** Fortunately, it's implied by FridgeLogic that the thing is fake and Olimar got scammed.

* The Titan Dweevil... Oh God the Titan Dweevil. You reach the final floor of the Dream Den, Louie is sitting on this huge pile of treasure, so you approach him to help him and collect the treasure, when this bastard rises out of the ground and begins to use those treasures as deadly weapons. His attacks include throwing electric beams, spraying water to drown Pikmin, firing a flamethrower, and poisoning the ground. All of these you can rescue Pikmin from, except the electric attack. But that's not all: after defeating the Dweevil, Louie drops on the ground and remains motionless, and Olimar writes in the entry on the Titan Dweevil that he actually wonders if Louie was controlling him.

Sure, Pikmin looks like a charming little game, but just beneath the surface lies all sorts of horror...
