Perhaps the most famous French singer of TheSeventies (the reach of his appeal nationwide has been compared to that of the [[Music/TheBeatles Beatlemania]] for the UK), he co-wrote the lyrics of "Comme d'habitude" (composed by Jacques Revaux and himself), the original version of "Music/MyWay" (reprised in the US with much success by Music/FrankSinatra), and composed the music of "Parce que je t'aime mon enfant", the original version of "My Boy" (which was reprised by Music/ElvisPresley).

Also among his most famous songs, which are major staples of retro nightclubbing and weddings, are "Le Téléphone Pleure", "Le lundi au soleil", "Magnolias for Ever", "Alexandrie Alexandra" and "Cette année là".

He died at age 39 in 1978. While taking a bath, he noticed that a light fixture was not straight on the wall, tried to straighten it (while being wet) and was electrocuted.
