* Theatre/OedipusRex: Parodied. Shinji and Gendou are in a kind of playful(? rivalry that involves trying to outdo each other at indoor biking while yelling about generational differences, among other things. Their highly conflictual / WellDoneSonGuy relationship in the original series is also parodied in that Gendou is [[http://www.misato.cz/files/u1/isik_19.jpg Shinji's biggest fanboy in existence]] (at least partly because he's such a narcissist). However, Shinji is genuinely annoyed at his father's overwhelming weirdness and disturbing displays of affection, so he usually tries to avoid him. Which just serves to heighten Gendou's desperation for his approval.)

* CaptainErsatz: Yui's design increasingly looks like [[Manga/AhMyGoddess Belldandy]]'s and Kyouko is quite similar to Urd. Coincidence?

* InNameOnly: The game is more or less based after the original series, while the manga goes for the HighSchoolAU. The only thing connecting the two are the three new [[BridgeBunnies bridge bunnies]].

* LetsGetDangerous: Gendou on [[TengenToppaGurrenLagann smashing your way through reason]].
* LighterAndSofter: It's pretty much of a {{Moe}} / {{WidgetSeries}} version of ''Evangelion'': light-hearted, considerably dumbed down and where almost everybody has his or her cute moments; also, anxiety can probably be cured by hugs, food, or Shinji's radiant goodness. Most of the characters are better adjusted than they'll ever be in the original verse and there's no trace of childhood trauma so far. ''Raising Project'' still includes a darker subtext about separated families, as the Ikaris hardly ever get to have dinner together, Kyouko hides in the Nerv basement, and Asuka's father is absent or dead, with the result that Shinji and Asuka still live at Misato's most of the time. Rei's background hasn't been explained in the manga so far, but she seems to have grown up mostly at Nerv and been rejected by other kids for being "weird," doesn't have parents, and images from the video game suggest [[spoiler: the Reiquarium still exists]]. The children are still Nerv's lab rats and kept in the dark about everything, too, but the direction occasionally throws a party for them for [[strike: damage control]] their efforts.

* OedipusRex: Parodied. * PragmaticAdaptation: This manga has little to do with the video game that shares its title. Given the original game was a PrincessMaker style "child raising" simulator, complete with Shinji marrying whoever he got into a relationship with, the story ends up being a mix of events from the game played for comedy with elements of a harem manga.

* TheUnreveal: This manga is an even more ludicrous case than the original series. In the absence of Evas, it's not clear at all what Nerv is fighting for or against, what the synchro tests are all about, or what's the point of ''anything'' about ''anything'' (there's going to be blood on the floor if the answer involves "allegory" and "to make Shinji grow up". SEELE is probably just doing all of this horrible whatever-it-is for the same reason every villain does: {{for the evulz}} and out of jealousy of Shinji's bishie-ness.)

** Also, Asuka's daydreams about [[spoiler: marrying Shinji]] really make one wonder what her couple would look like. Possibly a hundred variations of AccidentalPervert -> -> MegatonPunch -> [[ComedicSociopathy comical crying / bleeding / bruising]].

* {{Baka}}: Asuka to Shinji, about a million times. Occasionally, Rei to Shinji due to feeling awkward about her feelings.

* FanDisservice: Strangely enough, Gendou's bouts of [[AccidentalPervert accidental perversity]] are [[SarcasmMode significantly less cute that Shinji's]]. He seems to have taken lessons from [[AzumangaDaioh Kimura-sensei]], too.

* BeyondTheImpossible: Parodied.

*** Shinji's "feminine" side and occasional "coerced cross-dressing" in the original anime are also played with when he has to wear a sailor fuku. The girls are embarrassed at what a convincing {{Bishoujo}} he makes and how cute they find him.

* EstrogenBrigadeBait: Ryouji Kaji.

* AnimeAnatomy: Half subverted in the {{OnsenEpisode}}s: the girls have nipples but another "strategic" spot remains hidden by steam clouds.

** In fairness, other adaptations - ''Angelic Days'', anyone - tend to be worse about it.

* AdaptationalVillainy:[[spoiler: Naoko Akagi is the manipulatrice in Gendo-Naoko relationship. In the original series, that was the contrary.]]

* IslandEpisode: Rei, Shinji and Asuka have to survive for one day by relying on each other. It's actually [[spoiler: a disguised holiday]] gone wrong.

* FreudWasRight: Played for fun and {{Lampshade}}d: Misato thinks Shinji loves "generous" women because he has a mazakon (mother complex). Shinji ''is'' a mama's boy, but it's a very mild case compared to the series. The Yui {{Fanservice}} still gets pretty weird at times. It's also [[FanDisservice nice to know]] Shinji's parents have a "healthy relationship" (seriously, the original anime was ''less explicit'' on Gendou's sexuality. Anime Shinji would GoMadFromTheRevelation in no time).
** The recurrent implication that Shinji will grow up to be ''just like Gendou'' and that his partner (whoever it is!) will find his clumsiness cute and charming. Which really makes one wonder [[ShadowArchetype what's the point]] [[GenerationXerox of having]] [[{{Manchild}} a coming of age story]].
** Shinji's "you-remind-me-of-my-mom" vibe towards Rei.
** Ritsuko hitting on Shinji to get information about the Centre is also pretty loaded.
** The plan to make Shinji blossom emotionally obviously has to do with his sexual maturation -much like in the original series.
** Also, Gendou and Ryouji's male rivalry involves baseball bats wielded in dramatic angle shots. When Gendou fails to bat properly, he reacts pretty much like [[FullMetalAlchemist Roy Mustang]] by rainy weather and [[SeriousBusiness insists on a revenge match]].
* FridgeHorror: Gendou's fanboying over Shinji seems to parody the daughter complex in comedy mangas, and no one wants to remember this element of his original characterization in the context of a high school comedy (also, it offers a scary new explanation for why he thought in ''TheEndOfEvangelion'' that [[spoiler: he'd be a danger to Shinji if he raised him]]. The jokes about Shinji being a mama's boy. Ritsuko's occupation as the school nurse, when you consider that she [[spoiler: acted as the school director with Touji]] in the original series and manga. This manga also sheds light on [[spoiler: Naoko Akagi]]'s special brand of mental illness, Ritsuko's obsession with the Ikaris and Kyouko's lack of parenting skills. Thank you, ''Raising Project''.)

* HoYay: Shinji/Kaworu. Kaworu is pretty literally the resident gay conspiracy, with many UnfortunateImplications. Gendo... simply loves Shinji so dearly he [[{{Squick}} wants to bear-hug him from behind or take a bath with him]].

* LesYay: To an annoying degree. Asuka/Rei on illustrations and in Shinji's dreams, and even in real-life as they become more friendly toward each other late in the series, Maya/Ritsuko, Rei/Misato because Rei [[spoiler: obsesses about boobs and can't help touching them]], and also Ritsuko/Yui and the terrifying [[spoiler: Rei/Yui]] because Yui [[spoiler: has the largest breasts of the whole cast]]. Look hard and you can probably see some Mana/Asuka too.

* LampshadeHanging: In the first {{Omake}}, Eva-01 and Zeruel complain about being left out of the show and parody the high school romance genre by wearing high school uniforms and declaring their mutual love; it doesn't end well. Misato's comments about Shinji's mother complex (possibly qualifies as MythologyGag. Kensuke and Touji's (and occasionally [[{{Irony}} Gendou's]]) jealous comments about his sizeable UnwantedHarem. Aoi, Kaede and Satsuki's quip that nobody notices Fuyutsuki because Gendou's co-conspirator is Yui. Shigeru and Makoto drowning their sorrows because they get ''even less screentime'' than Fuyutsuki. The operators thinking that one of Misato's {{ZanyScheme}}s to force Shinji to be more suave "looked just like something from a manga."

* OnlySaneMan: Shinji seems to be the only one to notice that the lab's universe and {{ZanyScheme}}s are extremely weird. Well, Asuka also [[LampshadeHanging remarks on it sometimes]].

* WellDoneSonGuy: Parodied and inverted with Shinji-Gendou, as it is Gendou who lives for his family's approval. Asuka's relationship to Kyouko, however, still has overtones of this. She even acts very childish and cute in her presence, with {{BlushSticker}}s and vulnerable expressions.

''Shinji Ikari Raising Project'' is a spinoff manga of ''NeonGenesisEvangelion'', loosely based on the eponymous video game.
