** One of the chapters in the manga takes advantage of this, as the high school is in need of "pretty" people to promote their institution for new students in a TV ad. Kaoru Yagi casts Switch, Daimon, Kiri, and... Bossun, from all people (thanks to one of many of Chuuma's experiments, which transforms him into an "ikemen"), with Tsubaki. They are called "Kaimei 5", as a reference to ''Manga/HanaYoriDango'''s own F4.

* AlternateUniverse: Multiple {{omake}}s featured in the series take place in alternate universes, including a ninja world (''Nusutto Dance''), a space opera (''Robot Dance''), a kindergarten world (''Biscuit Dance''), and a JRPG world (''Quest Dance'').

* AccidentalMisnaming: The Sket Dan are constantly getting Jougasaki's name wrong.

* BadassAndBaby: When the rest of the Sket Dan got sick, Switch had to be pulled out from his sidelines comfort zone, and is asked by the Principal to take care of his grandson while also having to do other clients' tasks with help of his gadgets.
* BareFistedMonk: Tsubaki prefers a hands-on approach to most problems. He isn't often pushed to use force, but practices amateur boxing, karate and judo for just such an occasion. He also literally becomes one in the Quest Dance stories, where he becomes a monk and learns to fight with his fists.

* BellyDancer: Saaya is made to look like a dancer in the "Quest Dance" bonus story in Episode 64, obviously parodying Maya from ''VideoGame/DragonQuest''.

* BigEater: Oh, good lord, Captain. She can eat 7 kilos of ramen in a sit, on top of a large box of chocolates and even a WHOLE plate of biscuits. As per the trope she does not show any ill effects or weight gain. However, do not count on her eating something that has eggs.

* BlindWithoutEm: Tsubaki can only see silhouettes if he is not using glasses or contact lenses. In chapter 125, for example, he walks into the Sket Dan room instead of the Student Council's and has a meeting with them thinking they were the Council's members when they just are limited to imitate their voices and other certain characteristics.

* BookDumb: It's stated that Bossun is way too smart than he looks as, but he isn't good at math, and it becomes a problem in his Second Year's finals. This is the guy who can calculate the trajectory of a slingshot projectile ''in seconds''. It's somehow justified because he just needs to be under his concentration mode to study harder. At the end of his finals, he [[SubvertedTrope got the highest mark]]. He's BrilliantButLazy.

* BratsWithSlingshots: Though most fights consist of Himeko doing the heavy lifting while the others stand in the background and pose, Bossun does have a slingshot that he can use to shoot pachinko balls with remarkable precision. During "Trouble Travel", he outright states that he has to use rather ''soft'' pachinko balls because it would otherwise be a potentially lethal weapon!

* {{Calvinball}}: Any time geography teacher Kunio Yamanobe shows up, he's bound to have some utterly nonsensical game in tow.
* {{Catchphrase}}: Tsubaki could give Mr. T or [[Manga/SoulEater Excalibur]] a run for their money saying "FOOL!" in almost every chapter he appears. Apparently [[Creator/HiroShimono he]] got annoyed at being called one [[LightNovel/BakaAndTestSummonTheBeasts all the time]].

* ChivalrousPervert: Cherry and the rest of the Gesu-ling group (according to them). They will verbally sexual harass any girls they meet, but never physically, and will pridefully receive any punishment from the girls (even from [[CharlesAtlasSuperpower Koma-chan]]). There is also the chapter when Cherry receives a confession from a girl, and gets really troubled because he doesn't want to disappoint her with his pervert tendencies.

* CornerOfWoe: Bossun sometimes curls up in the corner all depressed, particularly when he's being ignored.

* CutenessProximity: Himeko tends to melt down at the sight of small and cute things, up until the point where aforementioned small thing acts like a [[CuteIsEvil complete jerk]].

* DecoyProtagonist: The first episode is about [[NewTransferStudent Teppei]]'s first days at Kaimei Academy, who eventually meets the Sket Dan and finds out what they do.

* FeminineWomenCanCook: Despite her appearance and her strange taste in flavored candy, Himeko is a very good cook. She still can't match up to Michiru Shinba, apparently proof that [[{{Bishonen}} Feminine Men]] can Cook as well.
* {{Fiction500}}: Mimori, who has been set up as a [[RichInDollarsPoorInSense super rich character]] since the beginning, has a ''self-sufficient underground city with an artificial sun'' as a house.

* ForceFeeding: Bossun has been forced to drink a bottle of Cola in one go twice, mostly thanks to Chuuma's experiment failures.

* GadgeteerGenius: Switch's inventions are either useful or AwesomeButImpractical. There are some chapters that show the effectiveness of those if they are combined together, one in which Bossun creatively combined some of them to rescue a boy who is falling from a building, and another where it proves that Switch can be a BadassBookworm if neither Himeko nor Bossun are with him all the time.

* HeroesWantRedHeads: Averted with Bossun, to a T. Just ask Saaya. In fact, if any of the ShipTease in later chapters are to be taken to their logical conclusion, it's pretty clear that Bossun prefers ''blondes''. [[ObliviousToLove He's just not fully aware of it]], yet.

* HypocriticalHumor: At one point, the ever so stoic Switch calls Yagi "expressionless", and gets called out by his peers for it.

* ImprobableWeaponUser: Himeko usually lays the law with a field hockey stick.

* InterruptedDeclarationOfLove: Poor Himeko. She almost confesses her feelings to Bossun in a couple of opportunities... just to be interrupted at the moment she's going to do so.
** After what she went through in chapter 232, [[spoiler:she decides to confess to Bossun when she already accepted that she saw him more than just a friend. She gets interrupted by Switch, who was previously knocked out]].
** When she realizes that there is not much time left from High School, [[spoiler:Switch convinces her that she should confess her feelings. And when it was the moment, Bossun tells her that he finally decided to go to the same University as her, making her to postpone the confession... until it backfires badly before their graduation.]]

* KamehameHadoken: The Koma cannon, which [[HugeSchoolgirl Koma-chan]] unleashes when she's feeling embarrassed. Although it was initially only a slam to the face.

* MediumAwareness: Roman can tear through pages to travel through space and time, wield speech bubbles and tone as weapons, and manipulate narration boxes. It goes UpToEleven in the "Back Then" chapter when she is clearly manipulating her 1st-year-student flashback with everything the page appears with. The {{narrator}} gives up at the end of her segment.

* MundaneMadeAwesome: Bossun's "Concentration Mode" is usually heralded by dramatic techno music and swirly space imagery, since a minute-long shot of Bossun sitting very still while wearing goggles would admittedly be boring. He screams "Concentration Mode" before putting his thoughts and details he perceived with attention, because he wanted to have a cool {{catchphrase}} as well.

* ObfuscatingStupidity: Soujiro Agata, who is really a MagnificentBastard when he proposes it into mind, however... he is a bit of a DitzyGenius, and quite a case of BrilliantButLazy.

* OverlyNarrowSuperlative: Himeko refers to Bossun as "the number one in Japan when it comes in finding a way of breaking out of a warehouse with long arms" during the first part of "Costume Break".

* ReedRichardsIsUseless: [[AbsentMindedProfessor Chuuma-sensei]] has, on his way to inventing an effective hair restoration topical (which alone would [[CutLexLuthorACheck net him billions]]), a freaking [[FountainOfYouth de-aging potion]]! Its only flaw? That it might be permanent! It's strictly PlayedForLaughs.

* StalkerWithACrush: Played with in the worst way possible during "Switch Off", since it reveals that Sawa's stalker [[spoiler:was actually her ''best friend'', Yukino, who was jealous of her popularity]].

* TeamMom: Himeko cooks, cleans and fawns over small adorable things. Also doubles as the [[MamaBear Team Momma Bear]].

* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Himeko loves Pelollipop Candy, a lollipop candy brand (similar to Chupa Chups) that has a gallery of weird flavors such as: Sea Cucumber, Soft-Roe, and Liver. Anyone else who eats them usually vomits.

* WhatKindOfLamePowerIsHeartAnyway: In addition to being a talented artist, impressionist, and savant at riddles, Bossun has "the power of incredible concentration". Although it isn't a particularly heroic skill (Kenta Shinohara's AuthorAvatar lampshades this when Bossun tries to demonstrate this as an idea for his manga and the former is left unimpressed), his "Concentration Mode" is actually [[HeartIsAnAwesomePower extremely helpful]], especially in a school environment; among others, it grants Bossun near photographic memory, extremely fast calculations, and ability to create an elaborate plan in minutes.

* WrongGenreSavvy: Kendo club captain Shinzou Takemitsu dresses and acts like a samurai from a period piece (for the most part), while Roman Saotome loves old-school shojo to the point where she can mentally filter the world to match the tropes.

** Coming to terms that the Sket Dan is going to retire and graduate, Tact tries to invoke this when the Pocket Dan do a trial run as their potential successors by attempting to copy their personalities instead of acting like themselves. This becomes an issue when Cherry does his usual sexual harrassment schtick towards Silk and instead of helping her Tact just plays along and expects Silk to defend herself (like Bossun and Himeko respectively), which upsets her.

** The series manages a noticeable one during its 6 years of serialization, although it's more explicit in the character designs, as almost everyone (with Switch's being a constant exception) develops a more consistent and rounded design with larger eyes. This becomes more noticeable in the girls' designs, with Himeko's being the most prominent example, as she looked more mature during her earlier appearances ([[http://imgur.com/a/iT4bD from the Jump one-shot pilot]], in 2006) compared to her youthful appearance she ended up adopting later (as shown in [[http://imgur.com/a/tVddf chapter 257]]).

** The anime takes it UpToEleven from the very start -- The second OP is set on a beach, featuring all the female characters while wearing either bikinis or swimming suits... [[FanDisservice including Yabasawa]]), while the third ED features the girls in their nightwear, with a bubbling scenery reminiscent of "bubbling censorship", with Himeko almost stripping off her nightgown at the end of the sequence. The second season takes it beyond as the staff takes advantage of [[AscendedExtra Kura]], Saaya, and [[BreastExpansion Usami]]. And the merchandise isn't left behind, either, as there were "oppai mousepads" of Mimori ''and'' Himeko!

* ArtEvolution: The series managed a noticeable one in its 6 years of serialization, more explicit in the character designs, as everyone (with Switch being an exception) started to get a more consistent and rounded design with larger eyes (this is especially more present with the girls).
** Compare Himeko [[http://imgur.com/a/tVddf from chapter 257]] to her earlier design from the [[http://imgur.com/a/iT4bD Jump one-shot pilot]]. Or Bossun, who looked like [[http://imgur.com/a/sVnez this]] in the original ''Akamaru Jump'' pilot, compared to how he looked in the color cover of [[http://imgur.com/a/kMbXt chapter 223]].
** It gets lampshaded with Teppei, who was oddly one of the few guys that changed drastically from his original appearance until his next reappearance in the manga. In-universe, Bossun even asked him if he got taller (as he joined the Basketball club, too).

** While not being "backstories" per se, the aftermath of "Switch On" brings up what many of the students at Kaimei were doing when the Sket Dan was just being formed, such as the origin of Switch and Reiko's rivalry.

** Ryosuke and Haru Kirishima were orphans and met each other when they were kids in the same OrphanageOfLove. They eventually got together (with help of their friend, Akane Fujisaki), married each other, and wanted to form a family. However, the Kirishima marriage tragically died in separate tragic circumstances, and Haru was actually pregnant... [[spoiler: and before she died, she gave birth to twins -- Yusuke and Sasuke.]]

* AttractiveBentGender: With the purpose of helping Usami feeling comfortable with the rest of the Student Council and Sket Dan's male members, they all decide to reverse-gender dress-up. It works succesfully with Switch, Bossun, and Tsubaki (with Kiri in the anime, too) dressed as cute girls and the other girls agree that they can pull it off ''perfectly''... but no one did it more epically perfect than [[spoiler:Tsubaki]].

* BeachEpisode: Chapter 266 is [[{{Fanservice}} appropiately]] named "Beach Girls Collection" in which things get [[TemptingFate bad]] when Bossun drinks Chuuma's Invisibility Potion Mark II and the Gesu club gets involved in it as well.

* DecoyProtagonist: The first episode is about [[NewTransferStudent Teppei]]'s first days at Kaimei Academy.
* DefeatMeansFriendship: A few of the culprits from the Sket Dan's cases eventually become their friends, and would even assist them on occasion.

** The Sketchbook, the name of the band the Sket Dan formed, is a now-disbanded real life band made specifically for the anime, with the members recruited via made to represent the Sket Dan members. They provide the music for their Kaimei Rock Festival performances (both instrumental and Bossun's vocals), and also performed for Openings 2, 4 and 6, and many of the endings (both main and one-episode ones).

* FirstNameBasis: Himeko considers it is a big step [[spoiler: for Bossun and Tsubaki to refer to each other as "Yusuke" and "Sasuke", respectively, even a year after they found out that they are siblings.]] With [[spoiler:Bossun's]] initiative, they eventually do, during the events of "Inherit The Twin Stars".

** The first one takes place in a winners' announcement rally, and what makes it hilarious is the fact that not only the ''actual'' characters, but even the (in-universe) ''imaginary'' characters and character ''variants'' (e.g. the toddler Bossun after he drank the [[FountainOfYouth youth serum]]) were eligible, so many react with dissapointment and anger of these "joke" votes, while others (of course) call out how is that even possible.
** The second one is a guess game hosted by Enigman and Quecchon, with the Sket Dan as contestants. Each one of them have to guess which positions they (and the rest of the series' characters) got. But, this becomes hard for two reasons -- one is that the position results are ''different'' from those of the first fan poll, and two is that there were also featured one-shot characters and joke votes of characters from other series! The punishment for the loser was that they would be drawn as a [[ArtShift stickman]] for the next chapter.

* HappilyMarried: In a series where unrequited love or mutual love being cockblocked is present, there are a few couples that are/were in a genuinely happy marriage: [[spoiler:Bossun and Tsubaki's biological parents, Ryosuke and Haru, who were in a good marriage up until their deaths and were super excited to start a family]]; and Chuuma and Remi, who become engaged after some contemplating (Remi at first has the choice of tricking Chuuma into a relationship with the Love Potion but decides she'd rather it be genuine, and Chuuma is encouraged by his daughter to remarry for love) and eventually marry towards the end of the series. [[spoiler:They appear to also have a child together in the epilogue]]

** Bossun usually cries loudly and it becomes a mess with his speech (also often ends up blubbering "dummy, dummy, dummy!"). Such as when he was worried about [[spoiler:Himeko and Captain arriving just in time to save them in "Ogress"]], or when Captain told the Sket Dan about her MissingMom.
** Shinba was crying as such when he was expressing his grateful wishes to the Sket Dan [[spoiler:during the Seniors' graduation, in February 2010]]. Bossun even mentions that he couldn't understand whatever he was trying to tell them.
** In Chapter 286 when Switch [[spoiler:finally speaks to his friends, the three of them became so emotional affected that they started laughing about this event (with snot and saliva) until it finally weighs down on them about what just happened]].
* InterruptedDeclarationOfLove: Poor Himeko. She almost confessed her feelings to Bossun in a couple of opportunities... just to be interrupted at the moment she was going to do so.

** As we find out from the flashbacks, the pre-Sket Dan days were miserable for Himeko and Switch before Bossun lent them a hand.

* NobodyPoops: Averted. There's even a full chapter dedicated to [[ButtMonkey Bossun]]'s PottyEmergency.
* NonuniformUniform: Quite a few students make variations to the school uniform, such as the Sket Dan trio (which includes but isn't limited to Switch's green vest, Himeko's collar and Bossun's red hat). This is averted in the school assemblies, as everyone including the Sket Dan forgoes the accessories and wear the proper uniform such as the blazer, tie/ribbon and pants (for guys).

* OffModel: It happens often, from off modeling the ''Manga/{{Gintama}}'' characters in the crossover episode (justified since ''Gintama'' is produced by Creator/{{Sunrise}} and ''Sket Dance'' by Tatsunoko), depending on who is directing the episodes... and who is also animating. Try to not cringe in the first episodes when they start to use the 3rd opening animation. Hopefully, this was corrected later in the airings and subsequent DVD releases.

* OneSteveLimit: Inverted in one chapter (full of Japanese writing/pronunciation puns) and taken to its logical conclusion.

* SadistTeacher: Daijirou Kutsuwa. Especially when he was tranferred to Kaimei Academy, imposing rules to anyone, and mostly threatening Himeko because she was formerly known as a delinquent. [[spoiler: He was a teacher from the middle school where Kiri was one of its students. He was the main reason on why Kiri didn't trust in anyone, as a result of bullying some of the students, such as Kiri's friend, Kihara. Of course, he was very shocked when Kutsuwa was transferred to Kaimei. And then ''he'' threatened him with his life as revenge.]]

** There's plenty of teasing towards Bossun and Himeko through the entire series. It doesn't help that both are ObliviousToLove in some ways or another, ever since Bossun helped Himeko in their first year of high school. As a friendship gift, Himeko gave him her [[NiceHat red horned hat]], and eventually Bossun returned the gesture with a "necklace" (which was actually a wrestling armband). He admitted once that she would be a "great wife", they had the entire incident of "Samurai" and "Purin", and the list goes on and on. She even tried to confess to him... but she was interrupted many times, [[spoiler:and the final attempt backfires badly]].

** Kiri and Usami share some moments between the two, [[spoiler:especially since they have to start communicating to each other if they are going to stay in the Student Council, when Tsubaki and the others get graduated]].

* ShowWithinAShow: Quite a lot of them, and, more often than not, completely uncomprehensible.

* {{Troll}}: "Trolling" seems to be one of Switch's favorite hobbies. In one chapter, Bossun and Himeko has an [[BokeAndTsukkomiRoutine anti-tsukkomi competition]]. What did a [[SarcasmMode nice, good friend]] like Switch do? Invite [[NoFourthWall Roman]] and [[ChivalrousPervert Cherry]] to the clubroom, of course!
* {{Tsundere}}: Parodied and exemplified by Saaya ever since her introduction, which started with the discussion of the trope itself due to a dating sim's character. However, Himeko fits as a ''tsundere'' as well, especially with Bossun, amplified during their awkward moments.

* UndyingLoyalty: Himeko and Switch [[IOweYouMyLife have unwavering faith in Bossun]]. Also, [[{{Ninja}} Kiri]] pronounced Tsubaki his master at the end of "Solitude".
* UnflinchingWalk: The Sket Dan invokes this after many difficulties they had to pass when they were trapped inside a warehouse (and trapped inside full-body ''costumes'') during "Costume Break" (chapters 76-77), as they burned it down.

* TheVoiceless: Switch, who communicates via text-to-speech with a laptop. In the last arc, the gang is also introduced to the new board director's son Yuuki who refuses to talk due to bullying [[spoiler:or so his father thinks -- it turns out he's afraid to speak up and reveal his voice, as he's biologically female but doesn't identify as such]].

** "Solitude", in a similar aspect as "Ogress" does to Himeko, reveals why Kiri Katou is very distant to his peers (especially the Student Council), when a SadistTeacher he knew in Middle School got transferred to Kaimei Academy.

Unfortunately, "Enta Hinohara" decides that Bossun is too boring to be a shonen lead character and makes a manga about the Student Council instead.

* XMustNotWin: Telling the Student Council or the Sket Dan that the other group is involved in something is a perfect way get to them to join in. This is especially pronounced with Tsubaki and Bossun, due to their rivalry ([[spoiler:especially after it's revelead that they are siblings]]).

* StalkerWithACrush: Played with in the worst way possible during "Switch Off", since it reveals that Sawa's stalker [[spoiler:was actually her ''best friend'', [[{{Yandere}} Yukino]], who was jealous of her popularity]].

** His old Poppman goggles really ''didn't'' do anything, either. The lenses were so old that Bossun could barely see out of them, but they helped him block out distractions when he tried to think.

* FourthWallMailSlot: There is a chapter which dealt with the results of the character popularity poll. What makes this poll hilarious is the fact that not only the ''actual'' characters, but even the (in-universe) ''imaginary'' characters and character ''variants'' (e.g. the toddler Bossun after he drank the [[FountainOfYouth youth serum]]) were eligible. And it is repeated again in the ''following'' character poll results, when the Sket Dan has to guess what positions the other characters got... which isn't that easy later because it ''also'' featured one-shot characters and other joked voted non-characters of other series, as well (and the punishment of losing was becoming a "stickman" for the next chapter).

** Tsubaki wanted to cut his hair he wanted to be [[ExpositoryHairstyleChange stronger and manlier]]. During his first encounter with Bossun, he was inspired by his courage to be able to stand and face others.

* InterruptedDeclarationOfLove: Poor Himeko. She almost confessed her feelings to Bossun in a couple of opportunities... just to be interrupted at the moment she is going to do so.

** As a slice of life, the series averts it in its entirety after the events from "School Trip Rhapsody", indicating that the characters would have the opportunity to grow up and graduate from High School.

** The Sket Dan was this (without they knowing about it) to the Otasuke-gumi (which leader was no one but [[spoiler:the Director of the Disciplinary Commitee]] when he was a high school student).

They originally wanted to take over the Sket Dan when they met, and wanted to rob their "clients" (as there couldn't be two simultaneous groups with the similar interests, approved by the Student Council). However, [[spoiler:they start realizing that next year when Bossun and the others got graduated, there wouldn't be another Sket Dan, so they dissolve their group and formally become part of the Sket Dan.]]

The Academy's principal is [[SuspiciouslySpecificDenial not part of this council]], and it's also implied that Prof. Yamanobe is part of it as well, as many other teachers from the high school.

** Yuuki Reiko. "Yuurei" meaning "ghost" in Japanese, although the kanji in Reiko's name are different. If the whole name was characterized in different kanji, you can interpret "Yuuki Reiko" as something like "Dark willed, spirit child", which is perfect for our resident occult-freak.
** Usami Hani, implying her double personality problem ("Hani" is how ''Honey'' is pronounced in Japanese (like ''Anime/CuteyHoney''), "Usa" comes from ''bunny'', mostly referring to the MsFanservice ones).
* RagtagBunchOfMisfits: The Sket Dan, the Student Council... though, almost the entire Kaimei student body have their quirks and individual characteristics.

* SadistTeacher: Daijirou Kutsuwa. Especially when he was tranferred to Kaimei, imposing rules to anyone, and mostly threatening Himeko because she was formerly known as a delinquent. [[spoiler: He was a teacher from the middle school where Kiri was one of its students. He was the main reason on why Kiri didn't trust in anyone, as a result of bullying some of the students, such as Kiri's friend, Kihara. Of course, he was pretty shocked when Kutsuwa was transferred in Kaimei. And then ''he'' threatened him with his life as revenge.]]
* SeparatedAtBirth: As it's revealed in "Happy Birthday", [[spoiler:Bossun and Tsubaki are long-lost twins]] who were separated due to tragic circumstances, including the death of their biological parents and other decisions that had to be made at the moment, [[spoiler: such as Haru's wish to not let Akane, (her and Ryosuke's best friend), raise both babies on her own]].
* TheSevenMysteries: Kaimei Academy counts (like any other Japanese school) with their own "Seven Mysteries of Kaimei". It was a relevant topic in one of the light novels, and it was referred again in the Fanbook... hosted by the resident Occult specialist, Reiko Yuuki.

** There's plenty towards Bossun and Himeko through all the series. Be it in the manga or in the anime. It doesn't help both are ObliviousToLove in some ways or another, ever since Bossun helped her in the first place (she gave him her [[NiceHat red horned hat]] and some time later, he gave her a "necklace"). He even admitted that she would be a "great wife", they had the entire incident of Samurai and Purin... the list goes on and on. She even tried to confess... but she was interrupted many times, [[spoiler:and the final attempt backfires badly]].
** There's some teasing for Tsubaki and Daisy, in one chapter when he goes to save her from being blackmailed.
** Kiri and Usami shared some moments [[spoiler:especially since they had to start communicating to each other if they were going to stay in the Student Council, when Tsubaki and the others got graduated]].
** Switch and Momoka also have some teasing, and it plays some important factors here and there for later arcs when it is revealed that she has a crush on him.
** Switch and Reiko, perhaps, would be a little ''too'' involved in their usual argumental debates and fights, and it is shown that Switch and Reiko ''do'' care and respect each other, even if they [[BlatantLies do not think of themselves]] as "friends".
** In episode 28 of the anime, there are some scenes with Agata and Shinba that are invoking this, but they aren't present [[AdaptationDistillation at all]] in the manga, besides the fact that Michiru do worry about his friend, ''a lot''.

** It's strongly hinted at that both Captain and Switch favour Bossun/Himeko. [[spoiler:Switch even lampshades later that he was shipping them together since the very beginning!]]

* SomethingCompletelyDifferent: Given its primary genre is comedy, this is something that happens when you less expect it, from its episodic normal chapters, to the "alternate world" ones, and jump into the dramatic (even the [[BackStory back stories]]) arcs that help in provide some [[CharacterDevelopment character developments]] in the middle, and then pretty much returns to its normal formula. It happens often.

** Smile reccurs to this when speaking to his teammates.

* TomatoSurprise: Shinohara loved to apply these "plot twists" in the series, as a matter to confuse the reader, when important development about certain characters was being revealed.
** The guy narrating "Switch Off", [[spoiler: "An-chan", was Kazuyoshi Usui]] all along. The reader even assumes that [[spoiler: the present Switch is supposed to be Masafumi]], since both of them share similar physical characteristics, until TheReveal. The anime even hides it well as neither of the siblings are fully credited in the first part of the arc.
** The guy who stars "One Guy's Quiet Day Off" was actually [[spoiler: Ryosuke Kirishima, Bossun and Tsubaki's biological dad]]. [[spoiler:Bossun]] is a GenerationXerox of him, and at first it looks like it is a chapter about ''him''. Similar to "Switch Off", the anime plays along with both characters being voiced by the same voice actor.

* AccidentalTruth: An inversion occurs in chapter 185, when Quecchon was looking for a missing item, but refuses to tell the Sket Dan what it exactly is. She does give some vague descriptions of the item, which Bossun tried to dechiper using his Facial Composite skills. He came up with a weird butterfly/bat/alien object that ''somehow'' really exist in the show's universe (surprising everyone, including Bossun himself), but when he tried to give it to Quecchon, she recoiled in disgust.

** The backstories of the Sket Dan have been presented at various points in the series. And all three of them are touching and melodramatic, whether tearjerking or[=/=]and heartwarming.

* BareFistedMonk: Tsubaki prefers a hands-on approach to most problems. He isn't often pushed to use force, but practices amateur boxing, karate and judo for just such an occasion.

* {{Bishonen}}: It might not be obvious, but Kaimei Academy has a lot of male students who are attractive (despite their quirky personalities or hobbies). Switch, for example, is popular with the ladies despite being a somewhat unpleasant otaku who speaks with a computer. There's also Michiru Shinba, Daimon Akitoshi, Kiri Katou, Dante...

* CallBack:
** The puppet show in episode 6 (chapters 10-12) has parallels to Himeko (the original Onihime) meeting her imposter in episode 3 (chapters 5 & 6).
* CensorSteam: Used to avoid [[DoesThisRemindYouOfAnything more]] {{fanservice}} scenes during the School Trip Rhapsody arc. And it actually gets lampshaded by the narration!

** Sawa and Kazuyoshi's friendship got a dramatic turn. Kazuyoshi had feelings for Sawa, and Sawa did have some as well since they grew up together as ChildhoodFriends. [[spoiler:And they both loved each other... without the other one knowing, and sadly, this gets downplayed in "Switch Off". The jealousy Kazuyoshi felt for Masafumi over Sawa (whom he felt she looked at their relationship as if it was LikeBrotherAndSister) is what kicks off its plot.]]

** The Sket Dan trio has custom-made T-shirts for each of its members.
** PlayedForLaughs in chapter 101 when Jin suspects that [[WillTheyOrWontThey Himeko and Bossun]] are dating. Both of them denied it while wearing the exact same T-shirt.
** In chapter 208, Tsubaki, absolutely [[SuspiciouslySpecificDenial not influenced by the Sket Dan]], tried to create a matching T-shirt for the Student Council.

* CreatorCameo: Enta Hinohara is Shinohara's manga counterpart. An author that went to Kaimei to look inspiration for his new manga series.

* DoubleStandardAbuseFemaleOnMale: Bossun is often on the wrong end of Himeko's UnstoppableRage anytime he makes fun of her lack of certain skills or qualities, and especially during AccidentalPervert moments.

** Bossun does not remember that he bumped into Switch, several months before he turned into a shut-in.

** [[spoiler:When Switch finally speaks to his friends, the three of them became so emotional affected that they started laughing about this event (with snot and saliva) until it finally weighs down on them about what just happened.]]

** And it's actually more of a LoveTriangle for Saaya, since she has confessed already her feelings [[spoiler:to Bossun (and it was hinted to Himeko when she was in Bossun's body during the School Trip Rhapsody arc when she told him (her) about it), but he's still somewhat unaware of what Himeko truly feels for him]].

** Shinba takes an advantage of this as a way to put an end to the LoveDodecahedron around Saaya in Agata's mind to let him concentrate for the second chance of the Tokyo U entrance exams. However, [[spoiler:Tsubaki doesn't know he is part of this plan]].

** The manga features some basic fanservice in some extras, although it [[UpToEleven amped up]] once [[ChivalrousPervert Cherry]] and his friends of the Gesu club were introduced in the series. The arc has ''plenty'' of fanservice, despite the cast's insistence to avoid it, due to the FreakyFridayFlip situation that Bossun and Himeko were involved in, as both of them were expecting the ''worst'' of the collateral damage.

''Sket Dance'' is a very light and happy manga that was published by Weekly Shonen Jump from 2007 through 2013, written by Shinohara Kenta.

Over all, it's random, fourth wall-breaking, random, funny, random and absolutely adorable. [[Spring2011Anime Got an anime adaptation in the Spring 2011 season]].

* AdaptationExpansion: Creator/TatsunokoProduction added fanservice that wasn't originally included in the manga, [[EarlyBirdCameo introduced some characters earlier]] than its original source, it {{ascended extra}}s and added characters that, sometimes, little to nothing were needed to be in some episodes (blaming the {{fanservice}} in some cases). They also expanded some single chapter plots as half hour episodes. Since the manga series continued some time more after the anime ended[[note]]The anime series ended in September 2012 with an OVA released in February 2013, the manga ended in July 2013[[/note]], it was forced to have a GeckoEnding, without too much resolution to some plots just like [[spoiler:adapting the rest of Switch's past and if he was actually going to move on to speak again]].
* AlternateUniverse: Multiple {{omake}}s take place in alternate universes, including a ninja world (''Nusutto Dance''), a space opera (''Robot Dance''), a kindergarten world (''Biscuit Dance''), and a JRPG world (''Quest Dance'').
* ArtEvolution: The series managed a noticeable one in its 6 years of serialization, more explicit in the character designs. Pretty much everyone but Switch started to get a more consistent and rounded design with larger eyes (this is especially more present with the girls).

* AttractiveBentGender: With the purpose of helping Usami feeling comfortable with the rest of the Student Council and Sket Dan's male members, they all decide to reverse-gender dress-up. It works succesfully with Switch, Bossun and Tsubaki (with Kiri in the anime, too) dressed as cute girls- the girls agree that they can pull it off ''perfectly''... but nothing more epically perfect than [[spoiler:Tsubaki]].

** The backstories of all three main characters have been presented at various points in the series. And all three of them are touchy and melodramatic, whether tearjerking or/and heartwarming.
** There is also Kiri's backstory, which details about his attitude and his lack of trust towards people, and how he isolated himself from his other classmates.

* BeachEpisode: Chapter 266 is [[{{Fanservice}} appropiately]] named "Beach Girls Collection" in which things got [[TemptingFate worse]] when Bossun drinks Chuuma's Invisibility Potion Mark II and the Gesu club gets involved in it as well.

* {{Bishonen}}: The reason Switch is so popular with the ladies despite being a somewhat unpleasant otaku who speaks with a computer. Also Shinba Michiru, Daimon Akitoshi (when he takes his mask off), Kiri Katou, and thanks to one of Chuuma's experiments, [[spoiler: Bossun ends up as one. The chapter focuses on the fact that the Academy needs a group of reliable and ''pretty'' people to promote it. The people in this group: Bossun, Switch, Daimon, Kiri, and Tsubaki who is added because he is the ''little brother'' of Bossun..]]

* BookDumb: It's stated that Bossun is way too smart than he looks as, but, still... he is not good at math, and he finds it as a problem in his Second Year's finals. This is the guy who can calculate the trajectory of a slingshot projectile ''in seconds''. It's somehow justified because he just needs to be under his concentration mode to study harder. At the end of his finals, he [[SubvertedTrope got the highest mark]]. He's BrilliantButLazy.
* BoyMeetsGirl: Bossun and Himeko meeting each other led to the early Sket Dan being formed.
* BratsWithSlingshots: Though most fights consist of Himeko doing the heavy lifting while the others stand in the background and pose, Bossun does have a slingshot that he can use to shoot pachinko balls with remarkable precision. During the Trouble Travel Arc, he outright states that he has to use rather ''soft'' pachinko balls because it would otherwise be a potentially lethal weapon!

** Ryosuke and Haru, [[spoiler:Bossun and Tsubaki's biological parents]]... but drama happened.
** Sawa and Kazuyoshi's friendship got a dramatic turn. Kazuyoshi had feelings for Sawa, and Sawa did have some as well since they grew up together as ChildhoodFriends. ** Kiri decided to dye his hair after not longing trusting people [[spoiler:when his friend from middle school, Kihara, transferred because he was being bullied by other classmates and the teachers. As a result, Kiri decided to isolate himself.]]

** Bossun usually cries loudly and it becomes a mess with his speech (also often ends up blubbering "dummy, dummy, dummy!"). Such as when he was worried about [[spoiler:Himeko and Captain Takahashi arriving just in time to save them in "Ogress"]], or when Captain told the Sket Dan about her MissingMom.
** Shinba was crying as such when he was expressing his grateful wishes to the Sket Dan [[spoiler:during the Seniors graduation in February 2010]]. Bossun even mentions that he doesn't understand his words en between the tears.

* InterruptedDeclarationOfLove: Poor Himeko. [[spoiler: She almost confessed her feelings to Bossun, just to be interrupted in time.]]

** When she realizes that there is not much time left from High School, [[spoiler:Switch convinces her that she should confess her feelings, already. And when it was the moment, Bossun tells her that he finally decided to go to the same University as her, making her to postpone the confession... until it backfires badly before their graduation.]]

** Kiri thinks it is like this towards Tsubaki [[spoiler:after the events of "Solitude"]], who doesn't quite enjoy it and finds it incredibly irritating at first, but he gets used to it.

* SeparatedAtBirth: As it's revealed in "Happy Birthday", [[spoiler:Bossun and Tsubaki are long-lost twins]] who were separated due to tragic circumstances, including the death of their biological parents and other decisions that had to be made at the moment, [[spoiler: such as Haru's wish to not let Akane, (her and Ryosuke's best friend), handle both babies on her own]].

** There's plenty towards Bossun and Himeko through all the series. Be it in the manga or in the anime. It doesn't help both are ObliviousToLove in some ways or another, ever since Bossun helped her in the first place ([[spoiler:she gave her [[NiceHat red hat]] and some time later, he gave her a "necklace"]]). He even admitted that she would be a "great wife", they had the entire incident of Samurai and Purin... the list goes on and on. [[spoiler:She even tried to confess... but she was interrupted and the final attempt backfires badly]].

** Suzu, Chuuma's daughter, wants him and Remi to be together. [[spoiler:And she succeeds in making them into a couple. Chapters later, they get married.]]
** It's strongly hinted at that both Captain and Switch favour Bossun/Himeko. [[spoiler:In fact, Switch even lampshades that he was shipping them together since the very beginning!]]

* TomatoSurprise: Who would have ever thought that [[spoiler: "An-chan" was Kazuyoshi Usui all along, who was narrating "Switch Off"? Or that the guy who stars "One Guy's Quiet Day Off" was actually, Ryosuke, Bossun and Tsubaki's dad? TheReveal was well too played in both sides of the manga and the anime, since Masafumi and Kazuyoshi are brothers who share similar physical characteristics, and Bossun is actually a GenerationXerox of his dad in his youth. The anime disguised this as well, especially regarding their voice actors. Neither Kazuyoshi nor Masafumi are fully credited in the first part of the arc, and Creator/HiroyukiYoshino HAD to act for Ryosuke and Bossun, as well)]].

* {{Tsundere}}: Parodied and exemplified by Saaya ever since her introduction, which started with the discussion of the trope itself due to a dating sim's character. However, Himeko fits as a ''tsundere'' as well, especially with [[spoiler:Bossun]], amplified during their awkward moments.

** In chapter 217, [[spoiler:Bossun exploits this to trick the Student Council]], and unexpectedly, they fell for it. Obviously, afterwards, [[spoiler:Tsubaki]] finds out and [[spoiler:he]]'s not amused at all by it.

* UndyingLoyalty: Himeko and Switch [[IOweYouMyLife have unwavering faith in Bossun]]. Also, [[{{Ninja}} Kiri]] pronounced Tsubaki his master at the end of the Solitude arc.

** Switch's laptop may count as a GadgeteerGenius. During a mock duel, even though he's a horrible shot, his laptop and calm demeanor allows him to get the upper hand on [[spoiler: Daisy]].

* WhatKindOfLamePowerIsHeartAnyway: Bossun has "the power... of incredible concentration" (admittedly pretty useful in a school environment) in addition to being a talented artist and impressionist, and a savant at riddles. But as others have pointed out, none of these are particularly heroic skills.
** The Concentration mode is actually [[HeartIsAnAwesomePower extremely helpful]]. Among others, it grants Bossun near photographic memory, extremely fast calculations, and ability to create an elaborate [[{{Plan}} plan]] in minutes.

** Touched in "Switch On". [[spoiler:Kazuyoshi is trying to play as a 'hero', just to apply justice and a well-deserved punishment to the 'bad people' that he digs dark info of, engaging them into a 'Death Fight' which the loser will have all of his 'sins' exposed to the world. He thinks he is one too, at the end, especially driven out of the guilt he still feels, months later after his brother's death. Bossun calls him off after discovering his charade AND receiving help from him to get straight... to him]].
* WhoWouldWantToWatchUs: Kenta Shinohara's AuthorAvatar shows up at the school looking for inspiration for a new manga series. Bossun thinks that it would be perfect to make the Sket Dan incredibly popular. [[spoiler:Unfortunately, "Enta Hinohara" decides that Bossun is too boring to be a shonen lead character and makes a manga about the Student Council instead.]]

* XMustNotWin: Telling the Student Council or the Sket Dan that the other group is involved in something is a perfect way get to them to join in. This is especially pronounced with Tsubaki and Bossun, due to their [[spoiler:SiblingRivalry]].

* StoicSpectacles: Daisy and Yagi. [[SubvertedTrope Subverted]] with Switch, who despite never changing his facial expression, is pretty clearly a DeadpanSnarker LargeHam.

* TeamPet: Housuke, the Scops owl.
* TerribleArtist: Himeko is a terrible artist. Roman is somehow even worse, and as an aspiring manga artist she creates [[StylisticSuck nigh-incomprehensible]] works that read like a combination of shojo and [[Manga/JoJosBizarreAdventure JoJo]]. ''Shojojo''. She even won a competition.
** Tsubaki as well. His idea of a good T-shirt is two kanji characters on a plain white design. He almost got a HeroicBSOD when Agata pointed out how lame it is. And then he tried to make a "stylish" T-Shirt... which is so lame Agata cried when wearing it.
