We have Jyugo (inmate no. 15) who's good at [[CripplingOverspecialization nothing but escaping prison]], Rock (inmate no. 69) who [[BigEater eats all the time]], Nico (inmate no. 25) who [[{{Otaku}} loves anime]] and Uno (inmate no. 11) who's a gambler and a [[UrbanLegendLoveLife girl-getter (or so he'd like to think)]]. Along for the ride are Hajime Sugoroku, the no-nonsense warden of cell 13, and his subordinates, Seitarou Tanabata and Yamato Godai, plus all the other wacky prisoners and wardens of the elusive Nanba Prison.

** On the prison guard's side is Yamato, who's almost always seen working out.

* BruiserWithASoftCenter: Rock is very fond of cats.

* TruthInTelevision: Female and male criminals are separated to ensure no misconduct in real life. The only reason why the [[TheSmurfettePrinciple warden is female]] is probably because she is super intimidating.
* UndyingLoyalty: Supervising officer Samon Gokuu to Momoko. He threatens Hajime over every perceived slight he does to the warden, even if he gets beated up for it.
* UnsettlingGenderReveal: In episode 1, Cell 13 hears about a pretty women visiting the jail and they break out of their Cell in to see her. Unfortunately, the woman is actually Hajime's crossdressing brother, Hitoshi.

** Though he was quickly creeped out over the fact that Hajime's 'sister' is his crossdressing brother and tells Jyugo he can take him.

* UndyingLoyalty: Supervising officer Samon Gokuu to Momoko. He threatens Hajime over every perceived slight he does to the warden, even if he gets heated up for it.

* TheAce: Hajime, who won the New Year's tournament against other guards and inmates.

* AfraidOfNeedles: Nico broke out of his previous prisons because of his fear of needles.
* AmbiguouslyGay: Pretty much everyone, considering this is a CastFullOfPrettyBoys, but episode 1 gives this role to Jyugo, with his accidental line that "[he likes] guys too" [[spoiler: to attract girls (it's a lie)]].
* AnimeHair: A lot of examples. A notable one is Chief Warden Hyakushiki Momoko, with hair so spiky people could injure their hands on it. The only aversion is [[spoiler: Hajime, who's bald]].

** On the prison guard's side is Yamato.
* BishieSparkle: A common complaint for detractors of the series (and also some of the people who like the series) is the unnecessary presence of these.

* CastFullOfPrettyBoys: Bar Momo, who is so scary and superior that even Hajime has to perform her every command, the cast is this.
* ClusterBleepBomb: In Episode 1.
* CuteBruiser: Nico is the smallest of the convicts, but that did not stop him from breaking walls down when he escaped from prisons in the past.
* EvenEvilHasStandards: Despite being criminals themselves, cell 13 panics at the idea of a murderer sharing their room.

* GreenEyedMonster: Presumably the reason Uno does not like handsome men.

* LazyBum: This is a characteristic of cell 13's prisoners.
* {{Pun}}: One's right there in the title - "Nanba('s) fools".
* LongingLook: Momoko often looks at Sugoroku this way. Unfortunately, most people including Sugoroku mistake it for a DeathGlare.

* MasterOfUnlocking: Jyugo. It does not matter whether it is a physical lock, or an electronic keypad.
* PintSizedPowerhouse: See CuteBruiser above.
* TheQuietOne: Chef Shiro
* RapidHairGrowth: Nico has a contagious disease that causes this.
* SoundEffectBleep: For comedic effect.
