* TheNicknamer: Hakata Minami's Natsu Umehara is a judo nut and tends to give other judoka nicknames. She eventually gives one to Michi just before Aobanishi's match with Tachikawa: [[spoiler:Ippon Michi]].

* {{Ojou}}: Maria Kujou, captain of Seijou High's judo team, is a classic one to the point where Seijou, a private girl's school, is owned by her family. She's fairly nice as her family's motto is "kindness and humility" though her teammates have to frequently chide her with cries of "humility" when she starts to get especially haughty.

* RedHerringShirt: In the fourth round of the second year Kinshuki, Aobanishi goes up against Kamokita High School out of Hiroshima. They're a random school and beating them would mean Aobanishi meets Kasumigaoka in the quarterfinals, leading to a potential third and final match between Towa and Erika. * EyesAlwaysShut: Kotoko from Hakata Minami rarely opens them. Goes with her general [[TheStoic quiet and deadpan personality]].

* MagikarpPower: Sanae starts out as the weakest member of the team but through hard work she starts to become a scarily effective ground fighter and grows into her role as team captain. Kasumigaoka's Mutusmi Jinno similarly starts out as a weak fighter before growing into a national level competitor. In fact, Sanae and Jinno form a friendship over the course of the series and Jinno's growth acts as encouragement and inspiration for Sanae.

* SmallRoleBigImpact: Due to being a third year, Himeno is only around for one tournament before she has to retire from the club for real. The rest of the club continues to revere her long afterwards, especially once her younger sister Kozue joins at the start of second year.

* GameBreakingInjury: Natsume is very insistent on trying to prevent these due to an incident involving a friend back when she was in high school. It's the main reason she keeps Nagumo sidelined during the Kinshuki as she'd only started judo a few weeks earlier. * WeakButSkilled: Aobanishi as a team is this. Generally, they're not on the same level as most of the elite teams like Tachikawa or Toutaidai Sakae. But their hard work and grit (as well as Towa) means that they're able to punch far above their weight and that, plus their upbeat attitude, tends to earn them a lot of respect and admiration from even the best teams.

However in the school's dojo, she finds that Towa Hiura, the girl who beat Michi in her final match, has also entered Aobanishi. Her passion for judo is soon reignited and the three girls decide to revive Aobanishi's dormant judo club.

With their P.E. teacher, Shino Natsume, as their advisor and bolstered by the transfer of Anna Nagumo, Michi's childhood friend, from the kendo club the girls set out to make a name for themselves. Along the way they'll make new friends, meet new rivals, and always strive to do try their hardest with a positive attiude because after all, judo is awesome.

* BoisterousBruiser: Sachi from Hakata Minami is tall, strong, and nearly as genki as Michi. Tachikawa's Emma Durand as well. Unsurprisingly, they get along great with Michi.

* TheEeyore: Kozue is a moody, gloomy introvert who doesn't deal well with extroverted types and tends to easily, and vocally, fall into negative thinking. It's made worse by the fact her sister is outgoing, pretty, and popular. Her attempts at breaking out of her shell and trying to get past her gloominess (at least a little bit) are a major story focus of second year.

* NoIndoorVoice: Michi is loud. Very loud. So loud that when Tamon first meets her during a joint practice between Aobanishi and Kasumigaoka, she immediately recognizes Michi as "that screaming girl from Aoba High."

* TomboyWithAGirlyStreak: Tsukasa is tall, strong, and very boyish in her appearance. That doesn't stop her from moonlighting in the makeup club or wanting to feel more feminine at times.

Instead, much attention is paid on the deep emotional bonds and relationships shared between the characters, to say nothing of some characters — like Nagumo towards Michi — who are written as essentially having one-sided crushes. And then there's Natsume and Inui's relationship in general...

Unfortuntely, she likes it a little ''too'' much to the point where even her own friends say that it probably wouldn't be wrong to call her a sadist.
