* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Or more accurately, memetic favorite food; various major YTP characters have foods they are associated with because of lines from source material. For example, Luigi is associated with spaghetti and the bagel, Mario is associated with toast, Sonic with chili dogs, the King with dinner (and [[BlandNameProduct Munf Munf]]), Link with Octoroks, Creator/BillyMays with slider burgers and bacon egg & cheese biscuits, Creator/MichaelRosen with plums and chocolate cake, The Fat Controller with fish & chips, and Thomas the Tank Engine with fish.

[=YouTube Poop=] started with a guy named [[https://www.youtube.com/user/SuperYoshi SuperYoshi]] testing out Windows Movie Maker, a new piece of software he found in his newly installed [[UsefulNotes/MicrosoftWindows Windows XP]], using the episode "Recycled Koopa" from ''WesternAnimation/TheAdventuresOfSuperMarioBros3''. The result was a video containing a few clips from the episode repeated and used in a random manner. Later he put this video as "The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3 Remixed" on December 22, 2004, up on his ''[=SheezyArt=]'' page. The video was well-received, and [=SuperYoshi=] together with his friend [[https://www.youtube.com/user/RetroJape RetroJape]] made similar remixes using the ''WesternAnimation/MegaManRubySpears'' cartoon and later ''WesternAnimation/AdventuresOfSonicTheHedgehog''. A few more of [=SuperYoshi=]'s friends joined and started putting their videos on Website/YouTube in order to confuse and anger people who were otherwise looking for regular ''Super Mario'' or ''[=AoSTH=]'' videos. The first three Poops have been brought to Website/YouTube later as ''I'D SAY HE'S HOT ON OUR TAIL'', ''Dr. Light's Guidance System Show'' and ''Robotnik's Sodomy Fest of 2005'', respectively.

** The YTP "[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EsfiWqcwa5U Don't Dance with the Teletubbies]]", despite the title, does not feature footage from ''Dance with the Series/{{Teletubbies}}''. The main source is actually a minisode called "Let's Dance" (which does use some of the same footage that's used in ''Dance with the Teletubbies''.

* "WebAnimation/The20MinuteYTPChallenge"[[note]] A series of poops in which participants have 20 minutes to poop an episode.[[/note]]

[=YouChew=] was the biggest (unofficial) forum for YTP on the Internet from 2007 until its closure in September 2018. Since then, various attempts at [[SpiritualSuccessor continuing the site's legacy]] have been made, including a failed reboot and several splinter groups. Only one of these groups, [=YTPMania=], maintained a decent userbase and lifespan before its closure in 2022. The latest torch-bearer was [[https://pinchbacks.net/ Pinchbacks]], but however it was shut down due to the website's owner getting overwhelmed with site traffic and personal life.

* The ''Series/ILoveLucy'' episode "Home Movies", in which Lucy combines three homemade films into [[https://youtu.be/Hvv3gYvW9Ys an incoherent pitch pilot]].

Going further back, [=YouTube=] Poop can be compared to the UsefulNotes/{{Dada}} art movement of the early 20th century, which was based on being nonsensical.

The genre suffered a decline in popularity during the mid-to-late [[TheNewTens New Tens]], in part due to [=YouTube=] growing even stingier regarding copyright takedowns, stricter community guidelines, and other forms of using extensive editing for humor showing up. This resulted in many members of the scene either turning dormant, moving on to other forms, or retiring from [=YouTube=] altogether. On the bright side, the ones that did stick around as well as several new members entering the scene started to evolve the genre, coming out with much more sophisticated videos with higher quality in animation, editing, sentence mixing, and, at its best, coherent story-telling. This led to debate over whether they should be considered the same genre as earlier [=YouTube=] Poops.

Often, YTP is commonly debated on whether it's a genre or an art form. A spinoff genre is the [[VoiceClipSong YTPMV]], or Youtube Poop Music Video, which turns the clips into instruments of a song.
