* Israeli sitcom Shemesh played it straight with Ogen, then subverted it, then played it straight again: pretty much any detail about her personal life, including her last name and residence, were never referred to up until the fourth season, when her suitor Khemi asked about it and lead characters Shemesh and Eti suddenly realised they knew nothing about her. It was then revealed she was told to play stupid for some governmental security job, but when she was fired and told to ‘drop the act’, she was just baffled and went on being stupid. The subject was never brought up again.

Apparently, he just finds money somewhere (and apparently, he finds a lot. In the episode the quote is from, he spends $2,000 to go to a baseball fantasy camp for a week.) ** Not restricted to the government - Non-disclosure agreements (especially common in the software industry) can result in a fair degree of this if you're involved in a project that isn't public knowledge. This troper interned at a large company on a project which was entirely dropped sometime after he left (and was never announced to the public), so when this internship came up at later interviews, the description had to be something along the lines of "I used proprietary technologies to write infrastructure tools for an as-of-yet unreleased and unannounced project", which is so vague as to be meaningless to the interviewer.

** This may not be played for laughs; there are legitimate cases where a government employee cannot reveal what their function is or even what part of the government they work for - or that they work for the government at all. The vast, vast majority of these functions are not the sexy stuff one thinks of when one thinks "security clearance." The person may just be fixing projectors at a training center or handling routine accounting paperwork for an agency.

Often, especially in media with a large ensemble cast, there is one character whose function (in terms of his internal purpose within the cast) is a bit fuzzy. The details of this role are left purposefully ambiguous. Sometimes, the general nature of the character's job is quite evident; for example, the character might be big, intimidating, and is good in a fight... but this naturally raises the question of just why the group needs someone who is big, intimidating, and is good in a fight.
