** In {{Touhou}}, you can reach a final boss and get a Normal ending if you win with some continues (but not too many), but to reach the ''real'' final boss, you first have to beat the Stage 5 boss on a no continue run, or else you can't even reach the correct final stage. and once you reach the true final stage, you have to go through ''that'' with no continues, or you get a bad end. (you can usually use a Continue by adding 30 minutes to the "time" counter, but if you lose all lives in Final B, that's an instant game over.)
*** The time counter is Imperishable Night only. It adds an hour. Every other game from 6 onwards has either three continues or infinite but it auto-selects 'no' after three deaths
** It was the same way in ''Touhou'' 4, Lotus Land Story. The 2nd game was similar, except you could continue if you ran out of lives, you get a bad ending if you do though.

to:

** {{Touhou}} has a few examples. In {{Touhou}}, most cases, a level in not playable until certain conditions are met:
*** The second game ''The Story of Eastern Wonderland'' had a proper TrueFinalBoss with Mima's second form (really third, but you don't fight the first one), which
you can reach a final boss only see if you don't continue until then. Interestingly, you can continue at that form, but you get the bad ending.
***In the fourth game, ''Lotus Land Story'', the last stage
and get it's FinalBoss can only be reached if you play [[EasyModeMockery if you play on a difficulty higher than easy]], and you haven't continued until then. Otherwise you receive the bad ending. The last stage also prevents you from continuing period; there's no bad ending, it's just game over.
*** Similarly, the sixth game ''Embodiment of Scarlet Devil'' prevents the last stage from being played on Easy difficulty and sends you to the bad ending. If you play on
Normal ending if or higher you win with some continues (but not too many), but to can still reach the ''real'' final boss, last stage even if you first have to beat the Stage 5 boss on a no continue run, or else (and can continue on the last stage), but you can't even reach still get the correct final stage. and once you reach bad ending.
*** Finally for
the true shooting games, the eighth game ''Imperishable Night'' has an alternate final stage, you have to go through ''that'' with no continues, or an alternate final boss, that you can only get to after beating the game once with the specific choice of characters. Continuing on either playthrough before reaching the alternative final stage is fine, but continuing too much gets a NonstandardGameOver ending. Also, it is impossible to continue on the alternative final stage; you get a bad end. (you can usually use a Continue by adding 30 minutes to the "time" counter, but if you lose all lives in Final B, that's an instant game over.)

*** It should be mentioned that the unlockable [[BonusDungeon Extra Stages]] with their [[BonusBoss Extra Bosses]] are technically ''not'' this trope gameplay wise, as unlike other examples the Extra Stage is really ''selected from the title screen''. Storyline wise it is debatable and depends on which game is being played.

The Battle Castle and Battle Arcade are basically the Tower with some small twists that can actually make it easier, but the Battle Hall and Battle Factory are completely different stories. The Factory forces you to win using only rented Pokemon, out of a very small selection, and the Frontier Brain of it, Thornton, uses Pokemon almost as powerful as Palmer's. Beating him without your own tweaked-out team is going to take a good deal of luck. Finally, there's the Battle Hall, which is a series of one-on-one battles. You have to face down Pokemon of every other type using just a single mon in order to get the gold print. Out of the 450+ Pokemon that can legally be used, people have only succeeded at it with fewer than 10, and even then it takes a good deal of luck and many hours.
