-> "The Force is what gives a Jedi his power, it's an energy field created by all living things; it surrounds us, penetrates us, it binds the galaxy together."
-->--Obi-Wan Kenobi, StarWars

Quotes/TheForce is when Rousseau Is Right -- at least partially. The essential nature of the world is good, and every human being is essentially good at heart. Darkness exists within everyone as well, but only as a corruption of original, pure nature. Thus, Good is hard, but not impossible. The better you want to be, the harder it is, but thanks to the Force, the desire to be a better person isn't without hope.

The Force is often synonymous with, originates from, or is otherwise connected to God, CrystalDragonJesus, or TheLifestream. It is often called "The Light."

The Force rarely takes any overt action against the forces of Evil unless as a last resort -- either because it can't, or because it feels that people should be involved in saving themselves. Actually, as much as people complain about having to save themselves, they'd also complain about having everything done for them. Humanity is ungrateful like that. So the Force errs on the side of trying to make BigDamnHeroes out of them. Viewers everywhere agree it's more tolerable to have a hero complain than to listen to a loser whining.

To that end, The Force calls people to be heroes and engineers the more benevolent versions of BecauseDestinySaysSo. This can be anything as small as being a good friend to someone having a really tough time, or as big as leading LaResistance against TheEmpire. The Force is known to produce or raise up the occasional Messiah to help the world along.

The Force actively works to promote harmony, joy and life. In terms of HarmonyVersusDiscipline, it tends to side with Harmony for its emphasis of acceptance and harmony while advocating self control. It advocates HonorBeforeReason -- but not to point of excluding reason altogether. It is the power behind ThePowerOfFriendship and ThePowerOfLove -- the IWantMyBelovedToBeHappy positive, selfless kind of love, not the obsessive, destructive kind. It offers forgiveness for those seeking repentance, because an enemy, an outcast or a corpse doesn't contribute as much to the universe as a Nakama new, redeemed family member can. In short, it is the reason why GoodFeelsGood, and can frequently "corrupt" villains into a HeelFaceTurn.

Still, the "not excluding reason part" comes into play here, as one must try to reasonably determine who is honestly remorseful, and who's just trying to pull a fast one. Helping with that and more, The Force is also often a source of Gut Feelings to heroes attentive enough to listen (and wise enough to believe). Further, the particularly attentive can learn when something important has just happened, or is about to.

Those strong in The Force can count on HeroicWillpower and HeroicResolve when they need it. WhiteMagic and outright Combined Energy Attacks aren't unheard of either. The Force is Good, but "Good" never meant "unwilling to kick butt when absolutely called for." BewareTheNiceOnes.

Trying to use The Force as a means to an end doesn't tend to work well -- results tend to improve when one surrenders oneself to The Force's guidance. Seeking power without regard for personal responsibilies or the individual rights of others is not going to work as intended. Likewise, complete stoicism is not a guarantee of goodness, but it helps.

Essentially, The Force was originally GeorgeLucas' appropriation of the very ancient East Asian concept called "Qi"/"Chi" in Chinese and "Ki" in Japanese. Literally translated as "breath", it refers to the idea of the flowŁ of energy that sustains living beings. In Wuxia fiction, not to mention DragonBall, Qi-based abilities have been subjected to much the same Flanderisation as "Force powers" have as the StarWars universe sprawled out from the original film.

* This is basically the entire premise of the Source from Jack Kirby's NewGods mythos, in which it is the Source... of everything. Given some uncanny similarities between the two sagas, many believe that this is what actually inspired the Force from StarWars.

* The Force from StarWars, of course. In this case, The Force doesn't seem to choose those who can use its power; people seem to inherit that potential genetically. Drawing on the Force's power in this fashion is thus part "inherent gift" and part "force" form of FunctionalMagic, as opposed to "theurgy." (Sometimes a child can't use it when both their parents can, but sometimes children can when neither parent could.) However, those who use the power against the Force's nature are "of TheDarkSide," and tend to physically wither from abusing it. The Force is about equally influenced by two Chinese concepts: Ki/Chi/Qi, a sort of all-encompassing energy of the universe, and the Dao/Tao, the nameless, undefinable reality beyond the one that we can experience ourselves. In the galaxy far far away, the only religion to get much detail is belief in the Force (probably because it's the only religion that's demonstrably true); the Wookiees actually call it the life-force.
** There are also many aspects of the Force. Most Jedi believe in the "Living Force" connecting all living things, which is divided into the light and the dark. Then there is the Unifying Force which is about destiny.
** It should be noted that this is how Lucas views the force. The ExpandedUniverse has taken a more nuanced approach, with some going so far as to deconstruct it thoroughly.
* Eywa in .
** It seems to work more like Eldar Spirit Stones, than The Force.
* While its motives are unclear, in Excalibur a Force-like...force...is referred to as 'The Dragon'.

* According to TheBible, God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, who writes the Story, makes the characters into Heroes, and helps those Heroes through the adventure.
** In more modern (relatively speaking) sections, this is largely the domain of the Holy Spirit. The most concrete description of it is "descending like a dove," it makes individual or mass infusions of HeroicWillpower, unlike the other two it is never depicted speaking, and some traditions hold it responsible for the subtle forms of divine intervention. In today's day and age, that would pretty much be "all of them."
*** This was considered normal divine intervention in ancient times, too. The Bible only records the sparse extraordinary events. In the intertestamental period, there was no direct verbal prophecy from God from nearly four centuries. When the altar was destroyed, the priests buried the altar stones in a secret place in the nearby hills, until somebody came around to let them know what they should do.
* The Charter in Garth Nix's Old Kingdom trilogy, which refers to both the ruling bloodlines of the world (King, Abhorsen, Clayr, and Wallmakers) and to the magic and order which charges the world with life. Charter Magic is very organized and beautiful (but still unpredictable), and Charter mages gain a sense of peace and strength when they immerse themselves in the Charter - to cast spells, for example.
** By the end of Abhorsen
* The One Power in the WheelOfTime series is described as the force that runs the universe and keeps time itself moving. A dark side version, available only to certain devotees of the Dark One, is called the True Power. (Confusingly, the One Power is said to come from the True Source, but the True Power does not.) There are also vague suggestions of a third kind, which would seem to come directly from the Creator, but that has not been explicitly described.
* The HandOfThrawn Duology hints that the Force is far stranger and more complex than even the Jedi know. The Aing-Ti monks can make their ships simply teleport in and out, and apparently they taught Jorj Car'das a little of this, despite his lack of actual Force-Sensitivity. There's a note about it having an entire spectrum, and in a different section of the StarWarsExpandedUniverse Luke offhandedly comments that the Force is like a river, and the Jedi way is a cup that's just one of the many ways to dip out the water.
** In the JediAcademyTrilogy, this is what the Force feels like.
-->Streen: "It feels like ten kilos of life in a five-kilo box. I can only feel a trickle now, like dust motes floating in a sunbeam, one by one, just moving through me, but it's just so right there's no describing it. It tickles a bit, feels like a first kiss, or the jolt you feel when the flux in sabacc just makes your hand better than what you were already betting."
* In Elantris, all magic is powered by a force called the Dor, which is also implied to be the basis of all life. There are several different ways of accessing the Dor and at least one religion dedicated to understanding it (and a spinoff Cult with some very... strange ideas about it, but nobody likes to talk about them)).
** Fun fact: Wilhelm Reich, of orgone energy fame, referred to orgone's EvilTwin as [=DOR=], or Deadly [=ORgone=].
*** From the same author: Stormlight, which also powers all the FunctionalMagic in its settling.
* Dust from Phillip Pullman's HisDarkMaterials trilogy.
* The Skein from Clive Barker's Abarat series.
* The Tradition in MercedesLackey's TalesOfTheFiveHundredKingdoms series. It's a bit more neutral than most examples, as it tends to make both heroes and villains (it doesn't care about ethics; it only 'wants' real life to play out like the canonical folktales).

* MichaelJackson mentions it at the very start of "Don't Stop 'Till You Get Enough"
-->"You know, I was...I was wondering, you know, if, if she could keep on, because, the force...it's got a lot of power and, it make me feel like...it, it makes me feel like...WOOO!"\\
[=*song starts*=]

* Brutally inverted in Warhammer 40000, where the emotions of hope, love, perseverence, and courage all contribute to TheDarkSide.
* Promethean: the Created has Pyros, the "divine fire" that powers the universe. It has its servitors in the form of the qashmallim and its very own version of TheDarkSide bent towards entropy and mutation, known as Flux. Slightly subverted in that Pyros is something that warps the mind whenever a mortal tries to channel it; the few who access it were most likely TouchedByVorlons and just a little bit insane.

* The Light from KingdomHearts. As the quote from the Quotes page says, everything and everyone in the multiverse is made of Light. Everything of the Darkness is twisted, broken, unformed, and un-whole, and thus angry and hungry. The Light sends visions and Keyblades to certain Chosen Ones to prepare and equip them to save the world and redeem what was lost to Darkness.
** Several statements and observations made by the characters seem to point to the idea that the darkness itself isn't evil, but rather the misuse of it which corrupts people. Riku had to learn how to control his inner darkness, and the Nobodies could use dark portals since they had no hearts, and therefore could not be corrupted by the darkness. Best summed up in Riku's statement: "It's not the darkness people are afraid of. It's what lurks in the darkness."
** This is coming from the series that practically started with the line "The closer you get to the light, the greater your shadow becomes." Immediately after this, Sora is attacked by a giant monster version of his own shadow. Leading to the conclusion that each person must fight their inner darkness.
*** The above statement can be alternatively interpreted as a warning against approaching either extreme ends of the Light vs. Darkness spectrum, enforced with a variation on the "action-reaction" principle of physics; in other words, BalanceBetweenGoodAndEvil.
* The Triforce of Courage and Wisdom from TheLegendOfZelda can be described in these terms. The Triforce of Courage, patron to Link, will only help those who are courageous and thus good of heart. The Triforce of Wisdom, belonging to Zelda, helps the wise and thus kind. On the other hand, the Triforce of Power, frequently used by Ganon, will help anyone with the will for power, good or bad. Well, two out of three ain't bad.
** Open to debate: there are many courageous people who aren't good-hearted, and a good number of wise people who aren't kind, either. The goddesses of the Triforce seem to be pretty good, but the golden Triforce itself is mostly what people make of it.
** Obtaining the full Triforce is not a matter of being good or evil, but of being balanced: having Courage, Wisdom, and Power in equal measure. The Triforce is completely neutral, and will grant the wishes of anyone who manages to obtain the full version, good or evil.
* The Holy Light from The Warcraft Universe is more or less TheForce - many fans will simply describe the Holy Light as such, really.

* "The Hax" in the webseries LifeInAGame, allows the protagonist Guy to bend reality in numerous ways.

* The Force from StarWars is based on UsefulNotes/Taoism, which teaches that there is a universal force called (but not named) the Tao that flows through all things, passively guiding the universe along a natural course. By living a certain meditative lifestyle, one can become "like an uncarved block" and then allow the Tao to shape them.
* This actually exists in many martial arts, especially the internal styles. The Chinese call it Chi and the Japanese call it Ki. In Yoga, this same force is referred to as Prana. This force is an energy that can be felt to flow through oneself (I speak from personal experience) when training. It takes a fair amount of time before it can be felt and perceived, however.

The goddesses of the Triforce seem to be pretty good, but the golden Triforce itself
Side is mostly what people make of it.

Those strong in The Force can count on HeroicWillpower and HeroicResolve when they need it. WhiteMagic and outright Spirit Bombs aren't unheard of either. The Force is Good, but "Good" never meant "unwilling to kick butt when absolutely called for." BewareTheNiceOnes.
