* In ''DevilSurvivor'', on [[spoiler:Amane and Naoya]]'s route, you enter a very nice-looking garden. A few seconds later, the boss [[spoiler:Jezebel]] makes her entry and the whole garden goes to [[LethalLavaLand hell]].
** Heck the game itself is one big Sugar Apocalypse. You start out with the impression that this is just going to be a demon themed 'mon game and then riots start happening and the police are useless and you remember that the people who made this game really like to make crapsack worlds.

* ''{{Erfworld}}'' - the inhabitants are almost universally cute and kiddy-looking, they ride "dwagons" and flying ''Marshmallow Peeps'', but are constantly in a state of war -- the entire world seems to be made for that sole purpose... ** And in ''Dances with Smurfs'', the Smurf village is ''again'' destroyed by bulldozers, it wouldn't have been so funny if UNICEF had not done it already.

* ''RobotChicken'' loves this trope. It happens in pretty much every other episode. They're kind of beating a dead horse by now. Serial-killing Smurfs, genocidal Carebears, bitter Strawberry Shortcake - etc. etc. etc.
** This was originally supposed to be justified by a mixture of the cute kids show and a darker movie (like Smurfs and Se7en) as the chicken watched them. This has gone away over time, though, leading to [[CrossesTheLineTwice a man repeatedly raping the Snuggles mascot]].

* An inevitable side-effect of ''{{Fables}},'' which is about the characters from fairy tales surviving in New York after their home worlds are conquered.
** Made worse by the general lack of sugar in the series. When the big bad wolf kills someone it feels like a subversion. When Red Riding Hood implies she was raped repeatedly it's down right disturbing.

* ''Wicked'' and its sequels shows the land of [[{{The Wizard of Oz}} Oz]] in a much [[{{Darker and Edgier}} darker]] fashion, with liberal cursing, graphic sex and violence, and very adult themes. Delving into the Wicked Witch of the West's backstory involves dismemberment, a puppet sex show, cursing, and dirty jokes right when she's ''born'', let alone the rest of the novel. It later features sex, murder, persecution, death squads, and the Witch's growing insanity. The later novels are no better, with the immediate sequel, ''Son of a Witch'', having her son join the military and engage in acts that distinctly resemble the Vietnam War.
** This AlternateContinuity version of Oz was ''never'' the semi-Uptopian land of wonderment that Dorothy saw. It starts out bad and gets far worse, with any perceived sugar being due to the fact that Gregory's version of Dorothy is a sort of Flanderized take on the Judy Garland version...naive, weepy, and sentimental to an insane degree.
