In truth he's just depressed and fearful, trying to intimidate people into leaving him alone. He's like a hedgehog, bristling with spikes in order to protect himself. Intimacy scares him. Perhaps because he's been hurt before?

This is a common method of creating a JerkassWoobie. He's introduced as a jerk that the audience hates, only for character development to reveal that really he's just scared of getting close to anyone. Sometimes will have elements of AllGirlsWantBadBoys.
