** The twin barbarians openly state they don't believe in fate, and deride the others for wasting time worrying about it when they could have been crafting their own future. They need the child for a mysterious ritual and clearly don't expect any cosmic resistance once they reach their destination.
** The Genasi soothsayer is the opposite, insisting that fate is preordained and nobody can subvert it, to the point he does nothing to slow the barbarians down as he thinks they're destined to fail anything that would harm the child.
** Ni-bast takes it even further, believing that fate will actively punish anyone who attempts to subvert it, thanks to her TragicBackstory attempting to save her sister from dying at war and unwittingly becoming the reason she died.
** The child's parents openly claim to support fate (especially considering it'd mean they gave birth to a messiah), but they clearly still think it must be defended, as they attempt to fight back against the barbarians in any way they can to protect their child.
** Finally, Haara (an anti-imperial freedom fighter) begins the story disbelieving in fate, as she'd lived a harsh life clawing and fighting for even basic amenities like food and freedom, things she'd have never earned had she sat around trusting the world would hand it to her. But as evidence starts piling up that this kid ''is'' abnormally favored by the stars, she slowly begins struggling to find a way to subvert his glory-filled future even if it may be impossible or [[WouldHurtAChild goes against her morals.]]
