Unless your story is set in Barbados, there are exactly four types of uses for tridents in fiction.

* The first type is for anyone associated with the sea, particularly if you're a fisherman or a god. This isn't contrived; tridents have their origins as fishing tools, after all, and Poseidon was portrayed with a great big trident.
* The second type is if you're extremely evil. Tridents don't go to ordinary villains, and certainly not to mooks; if you're wielding one, you're pretty much Satan, or his local counterpart. Even then these can also be in the hands of the common demons and devils (Cartoony or otherwise) whom work in Hell by punishing sinners.
* The third type is if you aren't evil or have anything to do with the sea. Not to be confused with the much more mundane farmer's pitchfork, which unless it's being used to pitch hay is generally wielded in combination with a torch and a mob mentality. This is also found in Myth/HinduMythology and in various East Asian mythologies.
* The fourth type has tridents being used in warfare as a spear capable of disarming. They were also used in AncientRome in the GladiatorGames, in a parody of fishing -- a fisherman (Retiarius) went after a fish (Murmillo, whose helmet had a fish welded on top). So historical works set in AncientRome or AncientGrome are justified in showing tridents, either in the games/arena or in war.

A Sub-Trope of BladeOnAStick and ImprovisedWeapon if the trident being used is just a normal fishing tool.

Unless your story is set in Barbados, there Tridents are exactly four types of uses for tridents in fiction.

* The first type is for anyone
commonly associated with with the sea, particularly if you're a fisherman for characters who are fishermen, merfolk, or a god. sea gods]]. This isn't contrived; tridents have their origins as fishing tools, after all, and motif is derived from how Poseidon Poseidon, the Greek god of the seas]], was often portrayed with a great big trident.
* The second type is if you're extremely evil. Tridents don't go to ordinary villains, and certainly not to mooks; if you're wielding one, you're pretty much Satan, or his local counterpart. Not to be confused with the much more mundane farmer's pitchfork, which unless it's being used to pitch hay is generally wielded in combination with a torch and a mob mentality. This is also found in Myth/HinduMythology and in various East Asian mythologies.
* The fourth type has
trident. In turn, this association came about because tridents being used in warfare were first developed as a spear capable of disarming. They were also used in AncientRome in the GladiatorGames, in a parody type of fishing -- a fisherman (Retiarius) went after a fish (Murmillo, whose helmet had a fish welded on top). So historical works set in AncientRome or AncientGrome spear.

The use that these tridents
are justified in showing tridents, either in put to can vary, besides being directly used as weapons. It's not uncommon for these tridents to grant some form of magical powers to their wielders, usually focusing on controlling water and/or sea life. Other times, they're carried more as ornate symbols, in-universe or out-of-universe, of what the games/arena or character is. Generally speaking, mortal characters are likeliest to use their tridents in war.

combat while divine ones tend to use theirs as badges of office, but the magical kind of trident turns up fairly often for both sorts.

A Sub-Trope subtrope of BladeOnAStick and ImprovisedWeapon if the trident being used is just a normal fishing tool.tool. See also DevilsPitchfork, for when tridents are associated with evil instead of the sea.

* Manga/Bleach has Mayuri Kurotsuchi's shikai, although it has a very short shaft the more important part is that it exudes a paralyzing poison.
* In Manga/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaVivid, several of Fabia's devils come equipped with these, including an enlarged one she brings out during her fight against that nearly skewers that latter [[spoiler:had it not been for Einhart]].
* Anime/MobileSuitGundamWing: While not exactly evil, the ArrogantKungFuGuy Wufei is probably the most morally ambiguous of the five main characters & has a double-bladed Beam Trident as his Gundam's sole handheld weapon after its MidseasonUpgrade. Notably this is the only part of any of the five main Gundams not to get massively overhauled yet again by Hajime Katoki for TheMovie, which features Wufei as one of the main antagonists for much of his screentime & even has him PuttingOnTheReich.
* Manga/OnePiece:
** Eneru at one point in his battle with Monkey D. Luffy, used his ShockAndAwe powers to heat up his gold staff and re-shape it into a trident. Later on, when he's gone OneWingedAngel, he uses two of them and nearly kills Luffy. While Eneru is both evil and the BigBad, his use of a trident is a bit ironic, AGodAmI considering his personality.
** Played straighter with Impel Down's staff. The average mooks are armed with tridents, and so does Hannyabal. Saldeath has a flute-spear and Sady-chan has a trident with a whip inside.
* Manga/Reborn2004: Rokudo Mukuro and Chrome Dokuro are no exceptions... They will skewer you with their trident... and also... Mukuro is an expert at MindRape.
* Manga/SaintSeiyaTheLostCanvas: Hades' servant Pandora wields one trident adorned with a snake motif.

* Literature/TheChroniclesOfAncientDarkness: In the prehistoric world, a three-pronged fork is a healer's tool used in fetching souls of sick people. However, it is also the symbol of the Soul Eaters, a group of corrupted clan mages who were originally known as the Healers. They each have the fork tattooed on their chests, and after . In the last book, Necromancer Eostra, the most terrifying of the Soul Eaters, wields a three-pronged spear which she uses to capture other creatures' souls.
* Literature/Horns: Ig becomes the BigRedDevil to avenge his girlfriend's murder. He hears a nearby commotion, and grabs the first weapon-like object in the ruined foundry without really seeing what it was. It turns out he grabbed a pitchfork.
* Literature/JourneyToTheWest: Some demons wield tridents, including Yellow Wind and the Scorpion Princess. In the latter's case, said trident was actually composed by her "pincers" and,in some versions, isn't a unique weapon but two smaller ones.
* Literature/Maddrax: Evil hydrites sometimes use a trident as a weapon.
* Literature/TheSalvationWar: TheLegionsOfHell are armed with tridents, which they use to channel their natural bioelectricity. Demonic nobles tend to have fancier, more conductive weapons.

* Series/MahouSentaiMagiranger: Dagon is a odd combination of aquatic and evil. Not only is he a GodOfEvil, he's also based on a fishman monster.
* Series/UltramanGinga: Dark Lugiel can summon a trident as his primary weapon. Interestingly, the titular Ultra, who is Dark Lugiel's arch-enemy, is a capable of turning the Ginga Spark Lance into a trident for combat.

* Satan is often portrayed as carrying a trident, though in modern culture it's often mistaken for a pitchfork. Early Christians tended to atione the classical gods, included giving Satan attributes of them, such as Poseidon's trident and Pan's cloven hooves and horns.

* TabletopGame/Wasteland2010: The swamp witch Eve-L carries a metal trident that shoots electrical beams.

* VideoGame/Blood: In the first game, the pitchfork is Caleb's melee WeaponOfChoice. He swaps it for a knife in the second game for no clearly explained reason.
* In VideoGame/BrainDead13, the giant statue at the end of the maze has a giant one that can impale Lance if he's not quick or careful.
* The Devil of VideoGame/Cuphead has these for obvious reasons.
* VideoGame/DragonQuest:
** VideoGame/DragonQuestII: Belial, one of the followers of Hargon, is armed with a dark-violet pitchfork.
** VideoGame/DragonQuestVI: Merman mini-boss Gracos wields a wicked-looking two-pronged pitchfork.
* VideoGame/DungeonCrawl gives us the Demon Trident, a superior version of the basic trident, as one of the three demonic weapons that often show up in the hands of powerful demons and hell knights.
* VideoGame/FridayThe13thTheGames backer-exclusive Savini Jason uses a black trident for his weapon. According to his bio, Jason stole it from Lucifer when he was escaping hell.
* Franchise/TheLegendOfZelda: Ganon loves to use a trident, using it in all but the first gamehe does wield it in the UsefulNotes/Satellaview remake, but it's only aesthetic since his attack pattern is unchanged and Twilight Princess of his appearances in his monstrous form. He's never used it in human form, though, with the exception of the 3DS version of the non-canon VideoGame/HyruleWarriors. However, his humanoid ghost-double Phantom Ganon wielded a trident in Ocarina of Time. VideoGame/TheLegendOfZeldaALinkToThePast is the first game in the series where he wields his iconic trident.
* VideoGame/MediEvils Zarok uses a trident instead of the more traditionally wizardly staff.
%%* Franchise/TouhouProject: Nue Houjuu from the 12th game wields one, however she is a subversion.%%How?
* VideoGame/Undertale: King Asgore Dreemurr wields a huge red trident (inspired by the one from Webcomic/Homestuck) in his boss battle, and even uses it to [[spoiler: destroy the MERCY option beforehand in order to prevent you from sparing him]]. [[spoiler:The trope is actually PlayedWith since Asgore is revealed to be a GentleGiant who does not wish to kill the player at all, but feels duty-bound to do so despite his own regrets.]]

* WebAnimation/Dreamscape: Kaila wields a pitchfork that she uses for her dark powers.

* In WesternAnimation/WinxClub, Tritnnus, the main villain in season 5, uses a trident to blast his enemies and brainwash people. As a merman, he's also connected to oceans.

* Anime/AngelBeats: Kanade Tachibana has a variation of her usual BladeBelowTheShoulder, "Guard Skill - Hand Sonic version 3." She has nothing to do with the sea (Everyone Calls Her Angel), nor is she evil.
* Manga/Eyeshield21: Shin Seijuro is characterized by a knight wielding a trident for his trident tackle. The kicker is that Shin is among the most righteous and skilled of the Japanese players and he bases his beliefs on pure merit and hard work, making him a subversion to both tropes.
* In Anime/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaStrikerS, former DarkMagicalGirl Fate Testarossa gains an attack called "Trident Smasher", which takes the form of three beams of plasma in the shape of a trident.
* In Anime/MobileSuitGundamWing, Wu Fei's MidSeasonUpgrade Altron wields a twin beam trident. He's righteous (but misguided), so this falls more under the martial arts exception.
* Manga/SoulHunter: Youzen wields the paopei Sansento (Three-Pointed Sword), taking the form of a large, seemingly blunt trident with long prongs. Despite it's harmless appearence, Youzen can fire RazorWind from it and even control/extend its prongs as if they were tentacles.

* ComicBook/BlueDevil uses a gadget-filled trident as a weapon, in keeping with his 'devil' theme. He later acquired the actual Trident of Lucifer.

* Melantha's Doom Trident in My Brave Pony: Starfleet Magic III.

* Literature/DragonLance: In one book, the main characters are stopped by a huge ogre knight armed with a large trident.
* Literature/FengshenYanyi: Several extras wield tridents/forks as their weapons, but the top example is Yang Jian (aka Qingyuan Miaodao Zhenjun or Erlang Shen), who finds his titular Three-Pointed Double-Bladed Glaive midway through the novel, while chasing a wounded feral dragon in a cavern. Note that, unlike the western trident example, it isn't not a spear with curved side prongs but is usually depicted as a large sword-like blade with sharp edges and either three sharp points in a row or two outward-curved tips and a central spearhead.
* Literature/JourneyToTheWest: The great sage Erlang's weapon (used to subdue Sun Wukong) is a steel, bladed trident, see above. Later, the hunter lord Boqin who rescues Tripitaka carries a similar trident with him, and uses it to kill a lynx.

* Series/KamenRiderSaber: Ryoga Shindai, a.k.a Kamen Rider Durendal, wields the Ruling Sword of Time, Kaiji that doubles as a trident when used.
* Series/UltramanGinga: The titular Ultra can summon a trident-like weapon called the Ginga Spark Lance. Fittingly enough, his ArchEnemy Dark Lugiel uses a trident as a weapon as well.

* Shiva, the Hindu god of destruction and change, carries a trident (trishula in Sanskrit) as his signature weapon. The significance of the trishula varies by interpretation, which may range from different eras of time to Shiva's role in regenerating and destroying the universe.
** Likewise, his consort Parvati (and her other aspects, Durga and Kali) also uses a trident as her sacred weapon.

* VideoGame/Drakensang: You can find and use a trident in Drakensang 2.
* VideoGame/DynastyWarriors:
** In her debut game, Xingcai wields a two-pronged fork (an actual weapon in ancient China and doesn't have the devil/sea associations) and a small shield. From 7 onward, she switches the fork for a simple sword.
** Jiang Wei also wields a traditional trident in most of his appearances; the only games where he doesn't wield one are 3 and 7, where he wields a spear. The standard weapon design callsto mind Erlang Shen's weapon.
** Wang Yi wields a pair of huge trishulas (Indian tridents) in her debut game and 8. She discards these for bladed wheels in 9.
* VideoGame/MapleStory: One of the possible weapons as a fighter is a trident with a fish stuck on the end... a Pun pike on a pike, as it were.
* VideoGame/RajiAnAncientEpic: The trishul is the first weapon Raji receives from the goddess Durga.
* VideoGame/SengokuBasara: Toshiie Maeda's weapon of choice is a large trident.

* WebAnimation/RWBY: Neptune Vasilias wields a guandao (a type of halberd) that can transform into a trident (or a shock gun). While this is obviously a reference to his namesake, the sea god Neptune (aka Poseidon to the Greeks), Neptune otherwise has no connection to the ocean. Indeed, he's actually terrified of water.

* Webcomic/RustyAndCo: In Level 7 , Dame Madeline Goodlaw receives a +2 Trident Of Warning from Zar the psion just before returning to Reality.
* Webcomic/Zukahnauts protagonist is unusually fixated with obtaining a trident from his first appearance. In the course of his attempts he makes several references to the comic book character ComicBook/SubMariner, who is often depicted with a trident in aquatic fashion, and of whom Zukah is later shown to have a poster displayed in his home.

* Literature/TimeScout: In the second book, Wagers of Sin, Skeeter tricked his captors into outfitting him with a trident and lariat, the two weapons he was actually best with, by pretending to be bad with them.
* In Literature/TheHungerGames, Finnick Odair wins his Games fighting as, essentially, a Retiarius, with a trident he received from his sponsors and a net he wove from vines. Also interesting to note is that Finnick is from District 4, which is the fishing district.

* Series/SpartacusBloodAndSand featured the fighting style known as Retiarius, in which gladiators were armed with a trident, dagger, net, and shoulder pads. The weapons were based on those that a fisherman would have. Other gladiators tend to mock it, as the lack of armor and net called for more evasive tactics than strength.

* VideoGame/ForHonor: The Gladiator hero uses a trident as their weapon, though they use a small shield in place of the net. They're considered part of the Assassin class, but hold the distinction of being the only "easy" Assassin, since they have many unblockable moves and plenty of mix-ups to keep their opponents off foot.

* Literature/JourneyToTheWest: Some demons wield tridents, including Yellow Wind and the Scorpion Princess. In the latter's case, said trident was actually composed by her "pincers".

** Arthur Curry/Aquaman inherited the five-prongs weapon he is first seen using in Film/BatmanVSupermanDawnOfJustice and Film/League 2017 League from his mother, Queen Atlanna. Batman joked about it being a "pitchfork" in the latter film. It gets wrecked by Orm during their duel for the throne in Film/2018. Then he becomes the wielder of the legendary trident forged by King Atlan with metal provided by Poseidon himself, which grants tremendous powers over the seas to its wielder — most prominently, he can command the sea life with it. He also defeats Orm by breaking the latter's trident, which was inherited from Orm's father King Orvax.

*Most depictions of Ulmo from Creator/JRRTolkiens Legendarium, despite him never actually being described in the text with one. Of course, this is totally justified since he literally is Poseidon...sorta. Supposedly, half-remembered and badly misunderstood stories about the Valar, eventually became Classical Mythology (particularly of the Greco-Roman and Norse varieties). Or at least that was Tolkien's cheeky private game which a lot of fans like to play along with. So Ulmo gets a huge beard and a trident in virtually every picture or story. But this is merely a fan convention, and not actually "canon". Though there are plenty of things about this series people tend to think of as canon, which aren't: like elves having pointy ears or indeed looking European.

Gabiru takes the trident from his father by force during his well-intentioned (and unknowingly manipulated) coup to fight the invading orcs, and he is given the weapon as part of his banishment after the fact to drive home how his father still loves him despite it all, and he makes it his personal weapon henceforth. So historical works set in AncientRome or AncientGrome are justified in showing tridents, either in the games or in war.
