Contrary to popular belief much, if not most, of this is not due to PerverseSexualLust. Many people who are fond of a specific type of animals (dogs, foxes, turtles, etc) are often drawn to characters of that type.
Most furries got into the fandom [[GatewaySeries through some sort of fiction]]. FunnyAnimal and TalkingAnimal characters are most common in children's media, so many furries were drawn in from video games, literature, or anime.
There are generally two types of furries: "feral" fans who like {{xenofiction}}, {{Nearly Normal Animal}}s, {{Partially Civilized Animal}}s, etc and the more well-known "anthro" fans who like {{Funny Animal}}s and [[PettingZooPerson Petting Zoo People]]. The two do intersect, but it's more common for the two not to due to differences in interest; they're attracted to different series. This is a part of the reason you rarely see people make ''Disney/TheLionKing'' characters into {{Funny Animal}}s or make ''Franchise/{{Sonic|The Hedgehog}}'' characters into "normal" animals.
Japan has its own furry fandom where the characters are called "kemono". Overall the designs tend to be rounder and softer looking than other furry characters. Kemono characters are often popular internationally and, obviously, kemono fans are drawn to certain series as well.

* Lola Bunny from ''Franchise/LooneyTunes'' is huge with furries to the point where many accuse her at being made for furry appeal. This in turn has made her a BaseBreakingCharacter with non-furry ''Looney Tunes'' fans, who think she stands out amongst the others too much and is a bad example of PositiveDiscrimination. Her redesign and personality change in ''WesternAnimation/TheLooneyTunesShow'' is less popular with furries, but is in turn more popular with her detractors, though it's unknown if that will stick
* WesternAnimation/MickeyMouse, WesternAnimation/MinnieMouse, WesternAnimation/OswaldTheLuckyRabbit, Ortensia, WesternAnimation/{{Goofy}}, and Max have quite few of fanworks about them. With the first four they mostly came off the back of ''WesternAnimation/MickeyDonaldGoofyTheThreeMusketeers'' and ''VideoGame/EpicMickey'' while Goofy fans like the ''WesternAnimation/GoofTroop'' universe.
* Lt. M'Ress from ''WesternAnimation/StarTrekTheAnimatedSeries'' was an early example of this.
* ''WesternAnimation/SWATKats'' has a following amongst furries.
* Rebecca, Baloo, Don Karnage and several of the GirlOfTheWeek characters from ''WesternAnimation/TaleSpin'' have followings.
* The Franchise/TeenageMutantNinjaTurtles are probably the most popular scalie characters out there, especially their [[WesternAnimation/TeenageMutantNinjaTurtles2003 2003]] and [[WesternAnimation/TeenageMutantNinjaTurtles2012 2012]] cartoon versions.
* Both ''WesternAnimation/ThunderCats1985'' and ''WesternAnimation/ThunderCats2011'' are popular due to the protagonists being cats. The remake tends to be more popular with furries due to the characters looking more cat-like, though the original series is overall ''far'' more popular.
* ''WesternAnimation/TinyToonsAdventures'' attracts a good chunk of furry fans.
* ''WesternAnimation/WeBareBears'' is a slice of life cartoon about three bear brothers. It doesn't have as large a fandom as other contemporary Creator/CartoonNetwork shows but it still has one. Quite a lot of fans are furries.

Despite the fact it's such a general term, almost every [=MAP=] happens to be a feral furry based video, usually revolving around either ''Literature/WarriorCats'' characters (in fact, most ''Warrior Cats'' videos on [=YouTube=] are [=MAPs=]) or cat (or dog) {{Original Character}}s.
