Part of this is because, in real life, "god" is one of those categories that ended up being applied fairly arbitrarily to the supreme entities, nature spirits, and culture heroes of many unrelated mythologies. Thus, it includes, among other things, the physical but literally immortal theoi of Greek myth, the intensely physical Aesir of Norse myth who could be maimed or slain like any other being, the supreme and omnipotent spiritual creator of Abrahamic theology, the Japanese kami that could range from the spirit of a single plant to the rulers of the universe, and many others besides. Consequently, modern fiction's depictions of gods can vary very widely depending on which sources they're drawing from.

A character would have about as much luck trying to kill the Author as one of these.
* Advanced Immortality: cannot die of old age. However, can be killed under certain circumstances. Such as beheading them with a sacred sword during a certain cosmic event might kill them, but not fire, bullets, or being stabbed.

* Webcomic/ErosConquersAll: Gods are powerful entities which feed on mortals; Eros feeds on their love, Belial on things they value, etc. This removes those things from them; at least one of Eros's victims was left disturbed by him and totally unattracted, and one of Rue's victims suddenly gets over his daughter's death instantly after she eats his sadness. Over time gods develop a "domain," an entire dimension that they control, and is implied to be as much an extension of them as their physical forms.

* Super Snail from Qcplay Limited has 8 Demon Gods who correspond to a country in the world (the US expy is a guy in PowerArmor with Doctor Octopus tentacles), can only be reached by a space rocket and are the villains of the game. They backstabbed the goddess Gaia, so she's just an disembodied eye in the game (you can find her lost bodyparts to graft on yourself). A frenemy to Gaia is a god who's a wish-granting dragon as a shoutout to Anime/DragonballZ. Then there's a pantheon of friendly minor gods who correspond to a stat that you have. The god of strength is an old geezer who looks like Happosai from Manga/RanmaOneHalf but using Darth Vader's armor and lightsaber. The god of Fame is Jackson during his "Bad" era. Meanwhile the Tec god is "Moosk" who's an expy of Elon Musk but wearing a blue Iron Man armor, the god of Art is Van Gogh and etc. Oddly the god of Faith is Hermes, yup that Greek messenger god but as he explains here he's acting as the god of faith (and expensive women's purses). If you offer souls to their altar and give enough of them, these gods will manifest and reward you with tadpoles, cells from zombies (as well as other creatures) and in rare instances - relics or parts of relics.

** Exactly how intelligent Arceus is has never been made fully clear... until VideoGame/PokemonLegendsArceus which implies the creature can telepathically communicate with the player and is thus very aware of what it can do and the power it subjects on the world. Unlike almost every other Pokémon in the series (save a few examples), this makes Arceus possibly the most intelligent and powerful being in the universe.

** Most deities are born from various elemental/abstract phenomena as simple lifeforms that gradually develop sapience and intelligence until they Ascend to godhood. Other deities, however, are the result of mortals Ascending to godhood, hence the Ascendant category. While generally composed of magic, deities can assume physical forms and are capable of biological reproduction, even spawning racial divine hybrids in some cases, and unlike mortals, they generally do not suffer any consequences from incestual relationships. Also, unlike mortals, deities only become more powerful and eldritch as they get older, with the oldest of them being feared and incomprehensible. However, due to the fluid nature of divinity in general, it is possible for deities to take this further by having their 'age' accelerated or even re-Ascending into a completely different being under the right circumstances.

* The gods in Literature/TheBeginningAfterTheEnd are referred to as Asuras, and are defined less as beings to be worshipped and moreso as beings that are able to transcend their bodies and fully harmonize with mana. There are eight races of Asuras - dragons, phoenixes, titans, pantheons, leviathans, hamadryads, sylphs, and basilisks - and each race comprises of multiple clans with one clan being the first among equals to represent said race in the High Eight (which in turn is ruled by the Indrath Clan of dragons). This in turn led to the DivineConflict that underpins the main story, as in the process of wanting to get revenge on Epheotus, Agrona and the Vritra became a case of HeWhoFightsMonsters, becoming no better than Kezess and the Indrath themselves. Only a few Asuras are exempt from being JerkassGods like the rest of their kind, such as the aforementioned Mordain and his followers, Aldir, Wren, Sylvia, and Sylvie (the last of which is ironically the only decent living member of both the Indrath and the Vritra, being the daughter of Agrona and through her late mother Sylvia the granddaughter of Kezess)]].

** Finally, there are the Ancient Ones, which generally come from the works of Creator/HPLovecraft. Their influence instead manifests primarily through vessels: special chosen talents that have whatever their trait was prior overwritten with the Eldritch Trait, and are given a specialized object through which they can cast the most powerful magic in the setting, albeit it is CastFromSanity and mental faltering can lead to their respective Ancient One possessing them, at which point it's a race against time until they regain their true power and become so strong that lesser gods are merely food to them.

* Super Snail from Qcplay Limited has 8 Demon Gods who correspond to a country in the world (the US expy is a guy in PowerArmor with Dr. Octopus tentacles) and are the villains of the game. Meanwhile the Tec god is "Musky" who's an expy of Elon Musk but wearing an Iron Man armor and the god of Art is Van Gogh. ** There has been much confusion created by the concept of The Holy Trinity in the Bible, the idea of one Godhead in three persons. It is an infamously confusing concept that has kept biblical scholars from getting sleep for literal millennia. The Trinity holds that God appears in three persons, The Father (Jehovah/Yahweh/I Am), The Son (Jesus Christ), and The Holy Spirit. Scholars disagree if these figures are different manifestations of one deity or are three individual deities themselves connected by a similar substance. These ideas have challenged Christianity’s place as a “monotheistic” religion, and other Abrahamic faiths have come to label Christian beliefs as polytheistic. Catholic priests often teach Jesus is the direct manifestation of the God who created the Earth in seven days and the are not actually separate, independent, beings. However the concept of direct incarnation have had some doubt thrown on them and have been challenged with scripture from the Bible itself. Quotes such as Matthew 27:46, when Jesus cries “Oh Father, why have you forsaken me” while being crucified shows signs of Jesus and God having separate intentions and independent minds. However, most church goers surprisingly never put much thought into the concept of the Trinity and dismiss it as something humans are unable to understand.

[[Jesus was way cool.
Everybody liked Jesus.
Everybody wanted to hang out with him.
Anything he wanted to do, he did.
He turned water into wine.
And if he wanted to,
He could have turned wheat into marijuana, or sugar into cocaine, or vitamin pills into amphetamines
He walked on the water
And swam on the land.
He would tell these stories.
And people would listen.
He was really cool.
If you were blind or lame.
You just went to Jesus.
And he would put his hands on you.
And you would be healed.
That's so cool.
He could've played guitar better than Hendrix.
He could've told the future.
He could've baked the most delicious cake in the world.
He could've scored more goals than Wayne Gretzky.
He could've danced better than Barishnikov.
Jesus could have been funnier than any comedian you can think of.

He told people to eat his body and drink his blood.
That's so cool.
Jesus was so cool.
But then some people got jealous of how cool he was.
So they killed him.
But then he rose from the dead.
He rose from the dead, danced around, and went up to heaven.
I mean, that's so cool.
Jesus was way cool.

* The gods in Literature/TheBeginningAfterTheEnd are referred to as Asuras, and are defined less as beings to be worshipped and moreso as beings that are able to transcend their bodies and fully harmonize with mana. They reside in Epheotus, a portion of the physical world that was drawn into the aether realm by their progenitors. There are eight races of Asuras - [[DragonsAreDivine dragons[]], phoenixes, titans, pantheons, leviathans, hamadryads, sylphs, and basilisks - and each race comprises of multiple clans with one clan being FirstAmongEquals to represent said race in the High Eight (which in turn is rule by the Indrath Clan of dragons). The crux of the storyline revolves around the fact [[spoiler:that most if not all Asuras are JerkassGods. Long ago, Kezess, the Lord of the Indrath and thus the ruler of the Asuras, and his clan orchestrated the genocide of the Precursors Djinn ostensibly because their mastery of aether and refusal to share it with the Asuras was a threat to the world, but in all actuality was motivated by petty jealousy.
