Now, in an emergency situation, it's not unreasonable to turn to the first lawyer available to you for basic advice while you search for an actual specialist. That tax lawyer isn't a criminal law specialist, but in a pinch (e.g. you just got arrested and they're literally the only lawyer you know), they certainly understand more about the mechanisms of the legal process than a tulip horticulturist, elementary school teacher, or taxidermist, which is why they have a law license. They might also have the professional contacts to find a criminal law specialist for you. Likewise, and depending on the situation, a client of little means may gratefully accept any lawyer willing to take their case, since any sort of representation is likely to be better than AFoolForAClient.

Expanded from Chuck's character page

** Chuck's obituary shows he initially practiced in criminal law before moving to banking and contract law.

** Jimmy's older brother Chuck, when he's on his game, can slide from criminal law to civil litigation to wills and estates to banking law without skipping a beat. And he's equally TheAce in any area of the law, even allowing for the Mesa Verde mix-up because Jimmy deliberately sabotaged him on that point. We learn that he was a ChildProdigy who graduated from high school as class valedictorian at age 14, and has been a trailblazer in legal practice from a very young age onwards. So the series makes a point of showing that he really is that much of a genius who can demonstrate expertise in almost every area of the law. Almost every other lawyer in the show is more realistic in that they stay within their career specialties, with the possible of exception of Kim who's own intellect possibly approaches Chuck's. Even Jimmy, who himself is no slouch, needs some time and learning, along with some guidance from Chuck, to transition from criminal defense work to elder law and back to criminal law over the course of his story. Chuck's obituary [[spoiler:obituary]] shows he initially practiced in criminal law before moving to banking and contract law.
