** It is likely that he would had cheated on her eventually anyways, making her do it first is probably just the author's way of giving the moral "okay" without putting any blame on him. Actually he DID attempt to cheat on her early in the story but it turns out the other girl was just screwing with him; naturally the male audience didn't bash him for that. In fact, it can be inferred that she cheated on him because she thought he was cheating on her, she certainly had reasons to think so given the harem nature of the series.

As one might effortlessly predict, many people seriously detest this genre/trope. Most people obviously think that love relationships, to be called that, should be based on sincere, genuine commitment (if not that, then what?), this being the very definition of 'romantic relatioship' , in contrast to 'sexual arrangement' (see difference between 'realistic' and simply 'cynical'). In other words, far from being an "idealized", "unrealistic" expectation/view of love, sincere and honest commitment are generally regarded by the great majority of people as basic, fundamental foundations/prerequisites, and in fact no one would ever feel inclided to even attempt to build a stable relatioship of any kind if that was not the case... if even that much couldn't be expected/assumed, in other words, if cheating and betrayal would be such a "normal" and foregone conclusion, then there would be no point in even trying, but, in fact, a different outcome is both possible and a reasonable goal (in practice, no one enters in relatioship thinking that he/she would eventually cheat/be cheated on, assuming that sincere, honest commitment would be 'unrealistic' or 'too much to ask': if that was the case, there would be no reason to even make an attempt in the first place, and in any case it would make little sense to talk about 'love', without sincere, honest commitment, in other words if one partner was trying to deceive the other -sincerity, honesty-, or didn't really want to pursue a relatioship in the first place -commitment-).

As one might effortlessly predict, many people seriously detest this genre/trope. Most Without necessarily pursuing some idealized aesthetical ideal of purity, most people obviously think that love relationships, to be called that, should be based on would still consider sincere, genuine honest commitment as the basis of a love relationship, the "bare minimum", so to speak (if that was not that, then what?), this being the case, in other words if the cynical point of view that betrayal was somehow "natural", "inevitable", "to be expected from the beginnig" was taken as the only "realistic" outlook, obviously there would be no reason for anyone to pursue a relationship in the first place). Everyday experience suggests that people are different: some might cheat at the drop of a hat, others might never be inclined to do it. Basic loyalty, honesty and respect for one another is the basis on any relatioship, not only romantic or sexual: even in friendship, or simple alliances/partnerships, no one would consider entering into it while considering/expecting from the very start that the other party might betray that bond.
In practice, no one enters in a relatioship thinking that he/she would eventually cheat/be cheated on, assuming that sincere, honest commitment would be 'unrealistic' or 'too much to ask': if that was the case, there would be no reason to even make an attempt in the first place, and in any case it would make little sense to talk about 'love', without sincere, honest commitment, in other words if one partner was trying to deceive the other -sincerity, honesty-, or didn't really want to pursue a relatioship in the first place-commitment-).
-commitment-. A concept of "love", "friendship" or even "friendly acquaintance" would probably be irreconcilabe with the lack of serious, honest commitment from all parties involved. There are two concepts here: honesty and commitment. Without the first, the relationship would be insincere, with one party deceiving the other -we couldn't therefore speak of love or friendship-, and without second, commitment, the relatioship would be one-sided, in other words, no matter how much love as one party might feel for the other

a romantic relationship, by definition, is based on \'sincere, honest commitment\'... as anyone that ever tried his hand at one should know, you don\'t enter relationship thinking that cheating would be an \'okay thing to do\' from the very start, and if so, then it could\'t exactly be called \"love\"

Having his original love interest raped by his best friend might qualify, but it doesn't exactly produce the disgust or hatred for the girl like consensual cheating on him would. Heck, even if she had consented I doubt anyone would hold it against Kotonoha, being that Makoto was a huge dick who basically disowned her because she wasn't putting out.
