* The ''MechWarrior'' series does this with what would otherwise be considered a completely viable weapon: the machine gun. While a weapon which fires a burst of bullets sounds powerful--surely it could be extremely useful in killing your enemies! Except your enemies are usually covered in armor that your comparatively puny machine gun bullets can barely scratch. What is great against infantry is a flat joke in the face of 100-ton armored behemoths. Then you realize that you can install more than one machine gun at a time, that ammo for them is plentiful and cheap, that they create zero firing heat, and that you can unload quite a few bullets in a second. Now consider that damage stacks, and once armor is lost, you start suffering critical damage to internal components. Congratulations, your Mech has gone from 'covered in joke weapons' to 'buzz saw.'

* ''{{Blasto}}'' includes an Enemy Gun that - predictably - makes an enemy appear directly in front of you, who almost always proceeds to kill you within seconds.

** In most Final Fantasy games the Demi series of spells are pretty much Joke Items as spells, as any monster worth using them on is generally immune, and so most players don't use them. In Final Fantasy Tactics, however, they are elevated to Lethal Joke Item status as they actually work on the final boss, and can make the fight entirely trivial.

** The Chicken Knife becomes more and more powerful as your escape count is increasing. Even though it usually cause you to automatically run away from battles, with a few tricks or when using it on an inescapable battles, it will be really strong weapon to use.
