* Film/Oppenheimer: The scientists detonate components of the bomb in testing, and the shockwave is delayed. When the Trinity is detonated, there is no sound while Oppenheimer reflects on what he's done, and then the shockwave hits.

Added DiffLines:

* Film/1997: In one DistantReactionShot, the ship launches a distress rocket and it takes a few seconds for the sound to be heard. James Cameron actually calculated how long the delay would be for that shot.

* Anime/MysteriaFriends has a scene where Anne is standing out in the rain. There's a flickering flash, then a few seconds later the screen goes dark and we hear a thunderclap.

In RealLife, thunder is the sound caused by a lightning strike. It has a delay because sound travels slower than light, and so the farther away the lightning strikes, the longer it takes for the thunder to arrive. Every five seconds is approximately a one mile distance between you and the lighting bolt. If you do manage to hear thunder at the same time you see a lightning flash, it must probably mean that you're inside the eye of the storm.

* The first Film/Poltergeist has the big sister teaching the little brother to count. They know the storm is coming closer as they count because the thunder comes quicker.

** Episode 4215, "Chicken When it Comes to Thunderstorms," has some chickens that are on Elmo and Abby Caddabby's T-ball team frightened by a thunderstorm with notably realistic lengthy gaps between the lightning and the thunder. This comes into play when Elmo and Abby suggest the chickens cover their eyes so they don't see the lightning, which works, until the thunder afterward freaks them out. Abby tries materializing earmuffs onto the chickens so the thunder doesn't scare them, but they end up still seeing the lightning, so that doesn't help. It's when Leela attempts to comfort the chickens when things begin to work out.

* Series/SesameStreet averted this a couple of time...
** In a 1981 Ernie and Bert sketch where Ernie is afraid of a noisy thunderstorm during the night, he decides to quell his fears by imagining the lightning flashes are Olivia taking a picture with her flash camera, and the thunder is the photo subject dropping something.
** On episode 2061 during season 18 Big Bird winds up frightened by a thunderstorm that hits just as he tries to go to sleep. The first two thunderclaps are instantaneous but after Gordon and Susan teach him that he can tell how far away a thunderstorm is by counting the time between the lightning and thunder every thunderclap afterwards comes a few seconds after the lighting.

* In the first episode of the HBO miniseries Series/Chernobyl, the infamous explosion is seen from a distance through the window of the Ignatenko's apartment. Lyudmilla doesn't even notice the explosion until five seconds later, when the loud shockwave finally reaches the apartment and rocks the building.
