* ''Series/SyndromeE''. Jerome Becker acts as TheDragon and disposes of other test subjects for Syndrome E, and potential witnesses ''including his own father''. However while he tries to frame Lucie Henebelle to stop her investigation Jerome turns down several opportunities to kill her, as he admires her for being the first fully successful test subject for Syndrome E, who is able to live a normal family life.

*** Data would go on to create another prototype Soong-type android of his own, his "daughter" Lal, in an effort to improve upon his creator's design. He succeeded in that regard, as Lal managed to learn how to emulate human behaviors more quickly than her "father", as well as mastering things Data still struggled with, such as verbal contractions. Unfortunately, she was developing far too fast, such that when [[FirstTimeFeeling feeling fear for the first time]] when faced with the prospect of being forcibly seperated from Data, she suffered a complete systems failure and subsequently died.

* ''Fanfic/ChildOfTheStorm'': [[spoiler: Apocalypse]] functions as this to Strange's other apprentices, being both this and SuperPrototype - he's got a very reasonable claim to be the most powerful, and he was Strange's original crack at finding and trained TheChosenOne to take down Thanos. Unfortunately, while he UsedToBeASweetKid, he got a taste for [[BloodKnight blood]] and conquest, combined with the sort of ItsAllAboutMe mentality that was exactly what ''wasn't'' needed. Unlike the others, he's the only one who really went against Strange's design in ways that were fairly disastrous - the other two fallen apprentices are implied to have respectively fallen partly at Strange's design, or in one case, pulled a HeelFaceTurn.

* ''Fanfic/CodexEquus'': As her first go at creating a species, the Protodragons aren't as refined as Tiamat's later creations. In particular, they lack a proper "cooling system" for their fire breath and thus have to manually cool down, typically by dousing themselves in water.

* ''Fanfic/AllForLuz'': Nine and Number Six were granted a copy of All For One's own Quirk and wielded several powerful Quirks each, but were ultimately weaker overall,a s they could only hold nine and six Quirks respectively. In the end, they were never anything more than lab rats to refine the Doctor's experiments. This is especially so compared to Luz who started off with being able to hold up to ten safely and able to increase the number by basic exercise over time.

** A running theme in ''Battletech'' history seems to be megalomaniacal dictators mandating the development of super-heavy war machines that end up being utter failures on a mechanical and practical level. The most notorious individual responsible for the most gigantic failures was Stefan Amaris, who was [[UsefulNotes/AdolfHitler based on the obvious unsavory real-life inspiration]]. He had a thing for demanding giant, oversized 'Mechs and tanks that carried ludicrous amounts of armor and weaponry and yet had reliability issues so severe that most of them broke down just trying to move. The list includes the 140-ton ''Burke II'' super-heavy tank, the 110-ton ''Matar'' Battlemech, and the 90-ton ''Rifleman III'' Battlemech, among others--only the last of these was able to actually escape the kind of severe mechanical faults that plagued the rest of his ideas, and even then it was still little better than a bipedal gun turret due to its abysmal speed and mediocre armor. The ''Matar'' is a particularly bad case of EpicFail, as its knees, ankles, and hips basically exploded from the weight stress the first time it tried to move.

They were very problematic and accident-prone, however, and steam engines in submarines would not gain favor again until the advent of nuclear submarines during the Cold War.

They were very problematic and accident-prone, however, however -- not helped by the absolutely massive flaw of having a crush depth shallower than the hull's actual length, meaning a too-steep dive in sufficiently deep waters could fatally endanger the vessel -- and steam engines in submarines would not gain favor again until the advent of nuclear submarines during the Cold War.

* ''ComicBook/IronMan'': It's probably easy to say that a lot of Tony Stark's armor fits into this category. His original armor was too bulky, nearly killing him when he was possessed by a voodoo practitioner, and another armor proved to be susceptible to control by Ultron. This is a result of his tendency to immediately attempt to use a new suit in the field as soon as he completes it, without bothering to properly test it first (In Tony's defence, this is mainly because most of his new suits are created to immediately stop whatever threat destroyed or damaged their predecessor, giving him very little time to test the suits before his foe causes more damage).

*** The Federation was just as bad. Its first actual Mobile Suit, the RCX-76-02 Guncannon First Type, was not designed as an actual Mobile Suit, but as an extension of large-scale combat weapons, as it was based off of the RTX-65 Guntank Early Type, thus it was designed to be more like a weapons platform on legs, made for mid-to-long-range bombardment. Thus, its first (and supposedly ''only'' sortie) saw 12 of these Guncannons utterly destroyed by five Bugu as the Bugu was designed to be mobile and versatile as possible. This CurbStompBattle allowed Tem Ray to push for the creation of the RX-78 series.

** The mothership itself: In the first game, the mothership (both the Kushan and the Taiidan variant) is lightly armed and armored and (in the single-player campaign) can't move in real space due to its engines being unfinished. This is a complication in some missions, such as the one where the mothership is endangered by asteroids and the one where the enemy tries a ColonyDrop on it. To rub salt in the wound, we see that the Kadeshi mothership has ion cannons and very fast engines, in addition to building capabilities and point defense weapons. In ''Cataclysm'', your mothership comes with working engines and capable weapons, and over the course of the game you upgrade it with superior armour, energy cannons, and a WaveMotionGun, while the Beast mothership has comparable normal weapons, slightly slower engines, and inferior construction capacity, but it has superior armour and swaps the WaveMotionGun with a beam to spread TheCorruption. In ''Homeworld 2'', the ''Pride of Hiigara'' (itself an improved version of the Kushan mothership) has working engines, decent weapons, and can be upgraded with various systems, including cloak generators and sensors to defeat it.

* ''Franchise/StarWars'' has the two generations of Clonetrooper armor compared to the eventual Stormtrooper armor:
** Phase I was based on Jango Fett's Mandalorian Supercommando armor but modified for mass production and use by standard infantry rather than a hypertrained warrior, thus made from cheaper and frailer plastoid and more covering. Aside for those necessary downgrades, it turned out the Kaminoan designers, being unexperienced with human anatomy, made it rather uncomfortable, and the many integral systems made it heavy, and thus even ''more'' uncomfortable when used for a long time, in addition to excessively expensive and slow to manufacture once the Clone Wars started. Fortunately [[GenreSavvy the Kaminoans knew there was space for improvement]] and started working on the next iteration as soon as the start of the Clone Wars allowed them to bring in human designers.
** Phase II takes advantage of many lessons learned during the early phases of the Clone Wars and uses less pieces for ease and cheapness of manufacturing, has far improved ergonomics, and the use of modularity allows to make it lighter by removing unnecessary equipment that can be reapplied as needed for any mission (for example, the Phase I is fully insulated and in a pinch can work as a space suit, while the Phase II simply has filters for most situation and needs the addition of outside oxygen tanks - that have a longer autonomy). On the other hand it's thinner and more vulnerable to (admittedly extremely rare) kinetic weapons, and once the Republic becomes the Empire and the Stormtrooper Corps is implemented the entire production line turns out to be customized for the exact specific size of Jango Fett and his clones. Thus the Stormtrooper Armor is developed to restore kinetic resistance and be manufactured for a wider amount of body types (plus incremental improvements in ergonomics).
** {{Subverted}} with the First Order Stormtrooper Armor: on one hand the use of new materials makes it more protective than Stormtrooper Armor and the sleeker design is easier to manufacture, but the sleeker design also eliminates the ergonomic improvements of the Imperial version over Phase II and the ability to install external oxygen tanks while failing to implement integral ones while using worse filters (Imperial armor could filter most poison gases, while First Order armor can only filter out smoke).

Despite costing more to develop than Elemental armor, it did not actually benefit from being bigger, as the Elemental was just as tough, and better armed to boot (the Elemental has an arm laser, a light machinegun, a disposable four-shot rocket pack, and an armor-ripping claw where the Harpy only has the machinegun). It was slightly faster on the ground, but that just put it in range of infantry, who could actually damage the Harpy quite easily. It's telling that even among the handful of Protomech users, no one actually tried to update the Harpy after the fall of Clan Smoke Jaguar.

practice. Some items are not "flawed", in that they are exactly what their creators wanted them to be. They're just too dangerous to be allowed into the world. Timothy Leary's Reading Glasses simulate the visual effects of LSD by anyone wearing them, resulting in the person never wanting to take them off or do anything, including eat, drink, or sleep. The end result is obvious. Copies made by [=McPherson=] only cause the world to appear trippy but don't result in addiction, and can also be used to send secret messages.

* ''TabletopGame/MagicTheGathering'' evokes this with the Prototype cards, introduced in ''The Brothers' War''. These cards are powerful [[KillerRobot artifact creatures]] with high mana costs, but the player can also get a significantly nerfed version of the creature for a discounted "prototype cost". This gives them the flexibility to be played as early or mid-game threats or as powerful late-game finishers.

** Speaking of the RX-0 series, their primary armament, the Beam Magnum, is an immensely powerful beam rifle that has the drawback of being supremely energy-inefficient, consuming an entire E-cap per shot, which limits the number of shots to fifteen maximum, assuming that extra magazines are carried. This is on top of the fact that any machine that isn't an RX-0 unit will break their arms if they try using it due to the weapon's recoil.

** Even the powerful [[Anime/MobileSuitGundamUnicorn Unicorn Gundam]] suffered from this. First off, all RX-0 units have the Newtype-Destroyer System (NT-D System) installed on them, and it's noted that the system is unable to differentiate between Cyber-Newtypes and real Newtypes, and that's without mentioning the fact that the NT-D system may be based on the even more flawed EXAM and HADES systems, which may explain another drawback to Destroy mode - using it effectively turns the pilot into a WetwareCPU, meaning that if the pilot is not careful, the will of the System will override theirs, meaning that rather than the pilot controlling the machine, it's the machine that controls ''them.'' The Unicorn also has intense acceleration and mobility - requiring that its pilots wear a specialized pressure suit to avoid blackouts. If one happens to not be wearing this special suit while the unit's Destroy Mode is active, it will result in the pilot losing consciousness from G-LOC, as Banagher learns the hard way after his first encounter with the Kshatriya. There's also the matter of the mental strain that the system imposes on the pilot, meaning that, ironically, the best pilot for a machine designed to destroy Newtypes is, in fact, a Newtype. Last but not least, the fact that the RX-0 Units having an embedded Psychoframe throughout their entire body means that they light up like a Christmas tree when in Destroy Mode - making them very obvious targets the moment someone spots them.

Misused, no indication of any flaw. Being upgradable implies it can be better, but that isn't the same asbeing flawed.

Ten years after, she still wishes he'd given her an upgrade, but he never got to do so.
