Justifiable in that after you have miniaturized past a certain level user friendliness, fashion and aesthetics will become a premium. Maybe you can someday put several terabytes into a datadisk the size of a dime but a human still needs to interface with it comfortably, so it is hard to picture computers designed to communicate directly with a human instead of just another computer being smaller than a palmtop without being inconvenient. Wristwatch-sized computers, "datacloths" which seem to be flexible paper-thin screens, and perhaps myriads of other arrangements are available. However one of the most popular arrangements in Traveller from pictures and descriptions seems to be something that looks rather like an Amazon Kindle.

** The entire ''[[Franchise/StarTrek Star Trek]]'' franchise's predilection for this aesthetic can probably be traced to the fact that Gene Roddenberry had obtained a plastic-spraying machine for coating miscellaneous TV props with a sleek-looking and rounded sheen of plastic. The fact that much of the real world's modern technological aesthetic can be traced back to ''Star Trek,'' and in turn to the fact that Roddenberry had this simple gizmo for making TV props cheaply, is rather amusing.

* ''WebAnimation/{{RWBY}}'': Scrolls are sleep collapsible devices that functions as a phone, messenger (email, text and video), camera, portable computer, video game controller and holographic projector. They can connect to any wi-fi or IT device simply by touching it, such as interfacing with the surface of an academy headmaster's desk, slotting into terminal ports, or sharing ID by holding the device up to a scanner. No matter what technological task is required, a scroll is almost always up to the task of doing it. They can even monitor Aura levels for Huntsmen, both individuals and entire teams. Everyone from children to adults uses scrolls, making them extremely accessible and ubiquitous. Atlas, the technological innovator of the world, takes this one step further by making all of its technology sleek and interactive; this even includes its battle droids, which are overhauled in Volume 2 to specifically include the ability to add a "human" touch by giving them sleeker, smarter and friendlier aesthetics. Atlas' poor sister city, Mantle, however, subverts this by being a decaying, dystopian cyberpunk setting to emphasis how the Kingdom of Atlas splits its "haves" and "have nots" between the two cities.

[[folder:Real Life]]
* The [[https://aesthetics.fandom.com Aesthetics Wiki]] refers to the mid-late 2000s white and glossy aesthetic of the iPod, Wii, and similar devices as [[https://aesthetics.fandom.com/wiki/Frutiger_Aero Frutiger Aero]]. This was preceded by the [[https://aesthetics.fandom.com/wiki/Y2K Y2K]] aesthetic of the late 1990s/early 2000s. As of the late 2010s/early 2020s, technological design has shifted to [[https://aesthetics.fandom.com/wiki/Cyber_Minimalism Cyber Minimalism]].
* Most design aesthetic today leans toward this. Generally, most people like their technology to be sleek, clean, and minimalist. [[http://www.teslamotors.com/models Tesla's Model S]] is designed around the popular iPod sentiment; it even has pulsing [=LEDs=] to indicate charging state and a 17" touchscreen console explicitly based on the iPhone's interface. Their Model 3 and Model Y take it a step further, omitting the traditional instrument panel and displaying all information through the center touchscreen. The [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mOueYfrrSjw Nissan Cube]] and [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c68V3z2tSjw Kia Soul]] also seem to be deliberately have this in their design. Before the modern trend, there was also the "blob" aesthetic of TheNineties - where cars had almost no straight lines and incorporated as many ellipses as possible into their design - which reached its head with the amorphous blob of the [[http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/1/17/96-97_Ford_Taurus_.jpg 3th generation Ford Taurus.]] Before the blob, there [[OurWeaponsWillBeBoxyInTheFuture was the brick]] aesthetic of TheEighties.
** The Toyota concept car (not intended for mass production yet) known as [[https://global.toyota/en/newsroom/corporate/30063126.html "LQ" (previously "Concept-i")]] might be the closest vehicle that fits this trope so far. It's white, glossy, smooth, and minimalist both inside and out. And it comes with an AI assistant named "Yui."
* An early example was the Ford Sierra, when it was first released in 1982. It was the first of the Fords to sport the bulbous "aero look" and was so unique at the time, it was dubbed the "Salesman's Spaceship".
** The Ford Taurus followed in 1985, and the makers of ''Film/RoboCop1987'' were so impressed by the [[TwentyMinutesIntoTheFuture then-futuristic]] design that they purchased a fleet of Tauruses to use as police cars in the film. This ended up being weirdly prescient; after Ford finally put the Crown Victoria out to pasture, the Taurus ended up becoming the most common model bought en masse for use as a police cruiser in the US.
* Another early example was the [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canon_T90 Canon T90]] SLR camera, which was designed by [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luigi_Colani Luigi Colani]] and released in early 1986. Colani's "biodynamic" approach to industrial design would set the standard for the Canon EOS series, first released the following year, for years to come.
* Bombardier Movia metro trains. [[http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_cbqm1p3Iac0/SdMFUQkDz0I/AAAAAAAAITE/_Rz_7GudNik/s1600-h/BT-1503-BucharestHR.JPG Movia 346]] model looks most like an iPod Classic from the outside, down to the combination of stainless steel and white panelling, and [[http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_cbqm1p3Iac0/SdME323jQFI/AAAAAAAAIS8/1MhJVPfmSGw/s1600-h/BT-2459-BucharestHR.JPG the inside]] does not lag far behind.
** [[http://i557.photobucket.com/albums/ss12/SBS1988U/Trains/BT-PR-20081107-Singapore_Downtown_L.jpg The version for Singapore's Downtown Line looks even sleeker,]] with the ridged metal paneling on the sides gone in preference for a smooth glossy white one. The headlights themselves have been streamlined into mere slits on the front.
** Also in the Movia family: Say hello to the [[UsefulNotes/TorontoSubway Toronto Transit Commission]]'s [[http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Toronto_Rocket.JPG Toronto]] [[http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Toronto_Rocket_Interior_Gangway.jpg Rocket.]]

* Mercedes-Benz [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Bucharest_Citaro_bus_3.jpg Citaro]] series of urban buses. You can also have one in [[http://www.britishmodelbuses.com/Real%20bus%20pictures%20Large%20Images/Mercedes%20Benz_Citaro%20Articulated_Stagecoach%20in%20London_Large.jpg red.]] Or [[http://bus-and-coach-photos.com.s3.amazonaws.com/1628.jpg both.]]
** The [[https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:965_Cars_Lacroix_Mercedes-Benz_Citaro_C2_Ligne_9503_Cergy-Préfecture.JPG new Citaro]] is, even more, this Trope.
* Irizar coach buses too. Here's an [[http://www.elportaldelautobus.es/fotos/data/media/73/PICT0841.jpg Irizar i6]]
* [[http://strand-craft.com Strand Craft]] yachts. Not white, but [[ScrewTheRulesIHaveMoney they will make one in white if you have the big bucks]]. And she comes with her own supercar.

* [[http://www.sudbrock.de Sudbrock]] furniture. Besides clean, light and airy looks, it's also [[http://freshome.com/2011/03/10/elegant-and-practical-furniture-collection-sentoselect-by-sudbrock/ adaptable]] to the room shape and many potential uses.
* [[http://www.benelli.it/it/prodotti/carabine-semiautomatiche/argo/argo-e-comfortech-black Benelli Argo Comfortech]] semi-automatic rifle is the iPod Classic of hunting: futuristic appearance, but innocuous enough to hide the fact it incorporates all technologies that could help to cancel recoil and steady the gun for accurate shooting, [[CrazyPrepared down to the exact composition of the rubber covering]].
* {{Creator/Nintendo}}:
** The UsefulNotes/{{Wii}} seems to be going for this kind of aesthetic with its white finish and flashing lights.
** The UsefulNotes/WiiU takes it even further by ditching its predecessors' sharp edges in favor of rounded ones, and by having a touchscreen on the controller. Although it may be somewhat subverted now that the white model has been discontinued in favor of the black one.
** The UsefulNotes/NintendoDS series seem to be going for this look [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Nintendo-DS-Lite-Black-Open.png in]] [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Nintendo-DSi-Bl-Open.png its]] revisions. Subverted by the latest version of the UsefulNotes/NintendoDS (the [=DSi=] XL), which is ''[[BiggerIsBetter bigger]]'' and marketed for it! Though it has bigger screens for the vision- and motor-impaired, it still folds smaller than the original UsefulNotes/GameBoy.
** The UsefulNotes/NintendoSwitch plays with this trope; it has a large screen and sliding features, but it is a deep gray in color and has classic buttons and switches. However, it is also the first Nintendo console to have a capacitive touchscreen, the same kind popularized by the iPhone and used in all modern smartphones and tablets. Without the Joy-Cons attached, it even looks a lot like a large smartphone or small tablet, so perhaps, Everything Is An i''Pad'' in the Future now. As a matter of fact, the ''nominally''-custom Tegra X1 chip used on the Switch has been used on Google's Pixel C and the Nvidia Shield TV, which gave way to porting Android to the Switch.
* [=PlayStation=] consoles have incorporated various elements of this over the years, beginning with the UsefulNotes/PlayStation3.
** The original [=PS3=] has a curved top, a slot loading disc drive, glossy finish, and capacitive power and eject buttons. Later revisions would tone this down by having matte finishes and replacing the capacitive buttons with traditional ones.
** The UsefulNotes/PlayStationVita takes cues from the latest Apple sensation at the time of its release, the [=iPhone=]. It has not only a capacitive touchscreen, but a touchpad on the back as well. You also had the option of purchasing it with 3G connectivity in its early life. Much like the [=PS3=] and early models of the [=3DS=], the original model was completely covered in glossy finish, but the resulting fingerprints led Sony to tone the gloss down on future models.
** Downplayed with the UsefulNotes/PlayStation4, which trades the curves of its predecessor for a more angular design, but introduces glowing light bars on both the console and controller. The latter also received its first redesign since the first [=PlayStation=], which made it more curvy in order to improve both ergonomics and aesthetics. The console's design has an overall minimalist feel, with the buttons and disc drive blending seamlessly into the rest of the console. Both the Slim and Pro models would take this even further by softening the original model’s hard edges.
** The UsefulNotes/PlayStation5 has white, curved plastic sides, and doubles down on the glowing lights.
* Also compare the iPad, essentially an iPod touch with a screen that's twice as big in each direction but which may, in fact, be thinner. Or, as one critic wrote, a more powerful iPod Touch that can be used by people without the eyesight of an Air Force pilot.
* Deliberately averted by Microsoft with their design philosophy called "Metro"[[note]]named for the signage used by mass transit systems, not metrosexuality. (supposedly)[[/note]] that was first used in the user interface for the Zune HD and later fully fleshed out in Windows Phone 7[[note]]although elements of it date back to the "twist" UI used in Windows Media Center 2005 and earlier generation Zunes[[/note]] which eschews glossy, rounded icons for decidedly flat, square tiles and heavy [[UsefulNotes/{{Fonts}} typography]], along with off-centered alignments and text that runs off the screen in order to aid in navigation through contextual clues to reduce the amount of excess UI elements. It is about as un-Apple as they could get while still being visually distinctive and functional - which was the goal.
** And now they are in the process of implementing the look across their entire product line ranging from the UsefulNotes/Xbox360 Dashboard, to the [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p92QfWOw88I next release]] of Windows.
** Played straight with the original model of the UsefulNotes/Xbox360, which was white with concave curves, in contrast with its predecessor which was black and bugled outwards at the top. It also had a ring of light around the power button that communicated information like how many controllers were connected, but unfortunately became most associated with the infamous “Red Ring of Death” error code. The Slim model was more angular in comparison, but balanced it out with capacitive buttons and a glossy finish.
** Downplayed with the later models of the UsefulNotes/XboxOne and UsefulNotes/XboxSeriesXAndS. They have the solid white or black colors and minimalistic design that exemplify this style but they're set apart by being much more geometric and angular, featuring sharp corners and straight lines as opposed to curves.
** Rather ironically, Apple started using the flat design elements rather than glassy/glossy ones for [=iOS 7=]. So while everything in the future may be an iPod, iPods themselves soon won't be.
** Microsoft played it straight with their view of [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vxPn4Eo0PRk 2020.]]
* Many of the exhibits at the Sony Wonder Tech Lab in Manhattan, New York were designed this way before its closing in 2016.
* This is a common design for the new wave of trendy self-serve frozen yogurt shops that have been sweeping the US in the last few years.
* Subverted by ''ConsumerReports''' recommended stopgap fix for the Apple [=iPhone=] 4's "death grip" problem. Put [[DuctTapeForEverything duct tape]] on the case - UsedFuture [=iPhone=], anyone?
* The "Ceramic White" dashboard trim for the Chevy Volt. [[LawOfChromaticSuperiority The "Dark" alternative is only available if you order one of the leather upholstery options ($1000)]].
* The [[http://logitech.com/k750 Logitech Solar Keyboard K750.]] The front is paneled in glossy black plastic, with low-profile chicklet keys, while the back is a huge piece of smooth white plastic. The edges are rounded and the whole keyboard is just a third of an inch thick - or about two pieces of cardboard stacked together. It is in fact just a wee bit thicker than an IKEA mousepad.
* The [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Cf7IL_eZ38 "A Day Made of Glass"]] commercial by Corning. 5 minutes of life in a world where nearly everything is either translucent or reflective, which makes it more like Everything Is Windows Aero in the Future.
* The [[http://www.westfield.com/ Westfield]] chain of gigantic shopping malls, in the UK, US, Australia and New Zealand, to the point that rather than standing out for their design, the Apple stores in them completely blend into their waves-of-curved-sheet-glass aesthetic.
* QuestSoftware's series of Spotlight products, which are all monitoring tools, all use an interface designed not to look out of place on a screen from ''Series/StarTrekTheNextGeneration''.
* As [[Series/TheDailyShowWithJonStewart Jon Stewart]] [[http://www.cc.com/video-clips/qeo3j7/the-daily-show-with-jon-stewart-screentastic-mr--fox pointed out,]] the [[http://insider.foxnews.com/sites/insider.foxnews.com/files/styles/780/public/ShepDeck8.jpg?itok=1L1eJ75X Fox News Deck]] (home of ''Shepard Smith Reporting'' and other breaking news since 2013) looks like "an Apple Genius Bar had an orgasm" in the newsroom. That said, the aesthetic does suit Smith's fast-paced delivery and energetic, "never sit when you can stand, and never stand when you can walk" style of anchoring.
* And, of course, the iPod. And almost everything else by Apple.
* Elon Musk's [=SpaceX=] is deliberately designing their vehicles and space suits with this in mind. Compare their [[http://www.spacex.com/sites/spacex/files/styles/media_gallery_large/public/pad_abort32.jpg?itok=jOCvN_9y Dragon V2 capsule]] with the Russian [[https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/b/bc/Soyuz_TMA-7_spacecraft2edit1.jpg Soyuz.]]
** To be fair, the design of the Soyuz dates to ''1967.'' A better comparison would be [[https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/8/80/Orion_with_ATV_SM.jpg The Orion,]] currently in development by NASA.
** Even more so [[http://www.spacex.com/sites/all/themes/spacex2012/images/mars/moon-bfr.jpg with their yet-unbuilt "BFR" rocket,]] which according to current renders will consist of a shuttle-esque upper stage "ship" with a simple tapered cylinder shape, one side of which has a smooth white surface interrupted only by a series of windows near the top, with the other side covered with a darker heat shield and two small delta wings, and a lower stage booster that just looks like a white cylinder with rockets attached to the bottom.
*** The current design (known as "Starship") uses stainless steel, and is more RaygunGothic.
* Injection moulding company Arburg make a 3D printer called the [[https://www.arburg.com/us/us/products-and-services/additive-manufacturing/freeformer-system/#!prettyPhoto freeformer]]. One issue of its promotional magazine ''today'' described it as "having the rounded lines typical of modern telecommunications equipment."
* CAF-built trains: compare the new [[https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/9/9b/RN463003El.JPG Civia]] conmuter train with [[https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/9/9b/Hugh_llewelyn_180_%285553135644%29.jpg/1280px-Hugh_llewelyn_180_%285553135644%29.jpg its precursor]], and in the Madrid Metro the [[https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/9/9e/Serie_5000_Metro_de_Madrid_%288871649558%29.jpg/1280px-Serie_5000_Metro_de_Madrid_%288871649558%29.jpg Series 5000]] with the newer [[https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/f/f2/Madrid_Metro_022.jpg/1280px-Madrid_Metro_022.jpg Series 8000]].
