* Played with in ''Manga/UQHolder''. The supposedly-male Kuromaru is extremely girly and gets mistaken for a girl and called "miss" by about every other character. In fact, it's [[AmbiguousGender left ambiguous]] for some time whether Kuromaru is just a really feminine male or [[{{Transsexual}} a biological female who identifies as male]]. However, while Kuromaru isn't lying when claiming not to be a girl, "he" is not actually a "dude" either. Turns out Kuromaru has NoBiologicalSex: the particular breed of demons he is descended from do not become male or female until 16 years of age, at which point they make a conscious decision which to become. Kuromaru is currently leaning towards male (hence why he identifies as such), but hasn't reached that age yet. To make things more complicated, Kuromaru is beginning to think about becoming female, due to developing a crush on the male main character.
** Further complicating matters is the fact that Kuromaru, like most of the protagonists, is immortal. While it has yet to be specified whether his particular brand of immortality locks in his age (as it does for the [[OurVampiresAreDifferent vampire]] main character and [[Actually900YearsOld his sire]]), if it does that means he will never be sixteen, and therefore unable to choose either way. [[spoiler: Recent chapters reveal that "his" body proportions have been, ever so slightly, shifting toward female, with other cast members commenting on his/her "curves" , so this may not be the case.]]

* Hiromi Sugita from ''Manga/{{Erased}}'' has both a feminine appearance and name and was allegedly murdered by a serial child kidnapper and killer who targets girls because he was mistaken for one. [[AmateurSleuth Satoru]] later theorizes that the killer was well aware of Hiromi's gender and killed him in order to remove himself from the list of suspects, as anyone who knew Hiromi would also know that he's a boy and thus be discounted by the police as a serial killer known for targeting young girls. As it turns out, [[spoiler:Satoru's theory is correct, as the killer is revealed to be both his and Hiromi's fifth-grade teacher]].
