* ChekhovsArmoury: Dirk isn't wrong--everything that happens in these books is ultimately important.Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency. A poem, a conjuring trick, and a stuck couch in the first few chapters are all linked by the end. Also occurs in the weirdest way (it's Douglas Adams after all) in the sequel, The Long Dark Teatime of the Soul. Needless to say, Norse Gods and a somewhat popular song are involved in the apparent suicide by beheading of some dude. Also, Dirk's non-working fridge? That has something to do with it as well.\\
\\
The Dirk Gently books embody this trope really because they are all about the interconnectedness of everything. Chekov's Armoury isn't just a device Adams used, it's what he based the whole book on.

Probably ot an Innocuously Important Episode as such: not a whole episode that looks like padding, more a well-stocked Chekhovs Armoury. Move YMMV material to YMMV tab.

* GeniusBonus: If you have a solid knowledge of history, literature, music, hypothetical physics, and computer programming then you're in for a treat.

* Lostalgia: The Salmon of Doubt anthology features the beginning of a third book that was never written. And its style is so instantly familiar that it feels just like the other books. Then it stops. Just after Dirk has flown to America and encountered a truck carrying a rhinoceros to an unknown destination.

* MidnightOnTheFiringLine: Dirk isn't wrong--everything that happens in these books is ultimately important.

* RecycledScript: DouglasAdams, who liked to recycle plot elements, based the first Dirk Gently book on two of his DoctorWho scripts: "Shada" and "City of Death". Knowing this helps explain one of the stranger assumptions in the first book: just why Professor Chronotis happens to be a centuries-old man who lives in a time machine. (It's because he's a retired Time Lord.)

Even if \"Shada\" is canon (which actually there\'s considerable disagreement about), Dirk Gently is not part of the Whoniverse. There are several noteworthy differences between the two versions of Professor Chronotis - not to mention that Dirk Gently\'s version of how life on Earth began is mutually exclusive with Doctor Who\'s version.

** Apparently, Shada is canon in the Whoniverse, which makes an actual Time Lord, and puts Dirk Gently into the Doctor Who canon.

* PragmaticAdaptation: The BBC4 adaptation removes all of the Shada elements and tells a much simpler story without losing the spirit of the source material. With it being only one hour long, something was always going to have to go.

* SiblingSwitchSquick: In the book, Gordon and Susan are siblings - in the TV adaptation, Gordon is Susan's ex.

* ImpossiblyMundaneExplanation: DirkGently does this to some extent in The Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul. When he meets a girl who repeatedly recites the previous day's stock quotes, he rejects the assumption that she's just memorizing them somehow (after all, the information is out there!) in favor of some more mystical explanation, because nobody would ever go to that much trouble. It's a little different since he's arguing on the basis of general human nature, not specific character, but the principle is the same.
** Dirk Gently sums this up by reversing SherlockHolmes' usual maxim: Eliminate the improbable, and whatever remains, however impossible, must be the truth.
