Because it borrows heavily from its commercially successful grandparent Metalcore, Deathcore is arguably more viable in the mainstream than Death Metal. It could be seen as a DarkerAndEdgier version of the former and a LighterAndSofter descendant of the latter. Because the genre's heavy influence from HardcorePunk supposedly makes it a "[[NoTrueScotsman bastardization]]" of HeavyMetal ([[WallBanger despite the fact that most if not all post-]]BlackSabbath [[WallBanger Metal is sonically indebted to Hardcore Punk]]) and [=~It's Popular, Now It Sucks~=], the genre is a prominent target for [[{{Hatedom}} contempt]] from purists.

The most popular subset of Deathcore employs breakdowns, grooves and MelodicDeathMetal-influenced riffs with occasional glimpses of Brutal/Technical Death. "Pig squeal" vocals, [[RefugeInAudacity which try to emulate the sound of a pig being slaughtered]], are sometimes used (less commonly in recent years thanks to [=~Complaining About Shows You Don't Like~=]). Brutal Deathcore bands eschew the more mainstream melodic stylings and often invoke Slam Death Metal tropes. Some bands add in an overt nod to the genre's HardcorePunk roots by including gang vocals.

Deathcore is a generic term for music that combines {{Metalcore}} with DeathMetal (usually more of the former than the latter, although there are certainly exceptions to that). It usually combines blastbeat-led riffing akin to Death Metal with breakdowns influenced by Metalcore and Brutal Death "slams". The prominent vocal style of Deathcore is usually the [[GutturalGrowler growling]] of Death Metal, often juxtaposed with Metalcore-derived screams and high-pitched shrieks a la CannibalCorpse and {{Deicide}}.

Also, as with NuMetal, the term "deathcore" is rejected by many deathcore bands because it's seen as derogatory.

What happens when you combine DeathMetal with {{Metalcore}}.

Deathcore is characterized by guttural death growls, pig squeals, metalcore-styled screams, and breakdown overdose, the latter to the point where nearly all deathcore songs are centered around the breakdown (or multiple breakdowns). Deathcore seems to be more commercially viable than most other forms of DeathMetal, possibly due to [[EmoTeen teenagers]] [[RuleAbidingRebel from a few certain demographics]].

There are several variants of deathcore. The most common deathcore style blends MelodicDeathMetal-influenced riffing with over 9000 breakdowns and forays into straight DeathMetal in between. When more emphasis on melody and more metalcore influences are applied, the previously mentioned variant becomes "melodic deathcore". Brutal deathcore, which replaces the melodeath riffing with brutal death metal and deathgrind influences, is less common but still fairly popular.

* EmoTeen - When the band members aren't PrettyFlyForAWhiteGuy, they tend to be this, at least fashion-wise.

** A minor one would be the bizarre shot from Job For A Cowboy's "Entombment Of The Machine" video, where all the music stops, the singer gives out a blood-curdling, yet somewhat feminine scream, and the drummer practically flings himself onto the drumset to bring the sticks down. Sometimes referred to as the "WHEEEEEEEEE- WHOPP."

Lighter And Softer =/= less heavy.

** Not... really. Most Deathcore is a lot heavier than DeathMetal since it tends to incorporate faster blast beats, more frenetic guitar riffs, and a wider range of unclean vocals.
