The trope isn't necessarily about individuals and can be applied to larger groups, up to and including entire species. For instance, a way to explain the presence humans in some distant system or galaxy is to have them as a LostColony of Earth -- which can be a lot more plausible than two identical species arising by pure chance. This also serves as a way of more closely integrating two or more settings into each other.
