When her mother dies, Miya is taken in by her father's wife and daughters, who at first glance very much look the part of a ''Cinderella''-style haughty, evil stepfamily. However, every time they do something that ''starts'' as a rebuke or insult towards Miya, it turns out to be an entirely wholesome act instead. When Miya arrives her stepsisters comment on her filthiness and odor... then proceed to bathe her and begin arguing over how to cutely dress her up. When Miya refers to her stepmother Teru as "Mother", Teru sternly hells her to do no such thing... because Miya's real mother is someone irreplaceable and she shouldn't call anyone else that; if Miya wishes, however, she can call Teru "Mommy". Miya's usual reaction to all this is confused happiness.

** The series than pulls a similar bait and switch with the identity of Wolverine's archenemy, Sabretooth. [[spoiler:''Twice''. After the aforementioned reveal, Dog grows up to have lighter hair and a larger build that makes him look kind of like Sabretooth, seemingly implying that he's the villain in question in his youth and that he torments Logan out of vengeance over Thomas' death. But that reveal never happens and instead Logan later in life meets a man named Creed who looks even more like Sabretooth, developing a rivalry with him. It seems that rivalry is building towards Creed becoming Sabretooth... and then Creed ''dies''. As the series closes, it seems we're not ever going to learn how the feud between Logan and Sabretooth started, until we switch perspectives to one ''Victor'' Creed as he learns that Logan just killed his little brother...]]

The scene then cuts to Okaya taking out his phone receiving a message on it, seemingly from Kumiru. [[spoiler: The message is actually from Okaya's mother as Kumiru was too scared of Okaya potentially not liking her to send the message]].

* In the short story ''Pudding Like A Night On The Sea'', the narrator and his younger brother eat the pudding their father had made for the family's dessert. Upon discovering this fact, their father, who the narrator had described as frightening when angry, threatens that there will be "whipping" and "beating" as punishment for their actions and for lying about it. They are then ordered to the kitchen where he directs them to ''whip'' egg whites and ''beat'' the yolks to make a replacement pudding.
