Perhaps the actions of the lead characters demonstrate MoralDissonance. Perhaps there was a WhatTheHellHero moment in which the canon author sided with the hero but the FanFic writer didn't. Perhaps it's ValuesDissonance between the author of the canon and the fanfic writers.

** In the "not all accusation fics are hate fics" vein, several [[FireEmblemElibe Blazing Sword]] post-game fics have Eliwood and Ninian working through the trauma of him having accidentally killed her. Usually the stories focus on Eliwood's guilt, but if Ninian is still upset about it the couple actually ''talks'' through their feelings and the stories end on a happy note of understanding rather than Eliwood repenting for his sins.

** In the "not all accusation fics are hate fics" vein, several [[FireEmblemElibe Blazing Sword]] post-game fics have Eliwood and Ninian working through the trauma of him having accidentally killed her; luckily, pretty much all of these stories are positive and promote forgiveness over accusation.

* In ''DoctorWho,'' it's ''licensed!'' Many ExpandedUniverse novels during the hiatus has pretty much everybody, up to and including his past and future selves, mercilessly let the Seventh Doctor have it, sometimes going past WhatTheHellHero and right into RevengeFic. Why the hate? Well, Seven was TheChessmaster, and sometimes used his friends as pieces on the board when absolutely necessary, and this was seen as being a callous jerk by many. This is a prime example of CharacterizationMarchesOn and ValuesDissonance: Seven didn't have ''half'' of Ten's level of MoralDissonance, and [[{{Revival}} Nine through Eleven]] have displayed Seven's "bad" traits weekly to much applause. But these days we like DarkerAndEdgier stories and [[FullSpectrumMorality shades of gray]] in characters. What we see as a necessary willingness to choose "bad" when it's between bad and worse and [[BatmanGambit the kind of tactics]] [[TheChessmaster you must excel at]] if it's just you and your screwdriver (which doesn't do wood!) versus the armies of [[TheStarsAreGoingOut universal armageddon]] was once seen as a little - or a ''lot'' - too dickish. [[HarsherInHindsight One wonders]] if Eight understood Seven a little better once the Time War came...

** ''[[Fanfic/TheNuptialverse Post Nuptials]]'' addresses the point in the season 2 two-part finale "A Canterlot Wedding" where Twilight is MadeOutToBeAJerkass when she accuses Princess Cadance of being evil and is later proven right ([[spoiler:it was an imposter, but still]]). Here, everyone who walked out on her is horrified at how coldly they'd treated one of their dearest friends, and continuously beat themselves up for it until they realize that sooner or later, they'll have to get over it. * VideoGame/{{Super Robot Wars Z}}2: Saisei-Hen did this with Ougi's decision. Schneizel reveals to the Black Knights and ZEXIS the true identity of Zero a.k.a Lelouch vi Britannia and tells them about the properties of Lelouch's geass. It gets worse when an angry Ougi appears after hearing everything about Zero from Villeta.\\

While the majority gets manipulated into believing what Schneizel says, only a handful of people(Sumeragi, Roger, Heero, Chirico) are able to see through Schneizel's plan and deceit. When Zero arrives, the Black Knights are prepared to pounce on him like in the anime but some members of ZEXIS(Sumeragi, Roger, Heero, Chirico, Crowe, Simon, Viral) tell the Black Knights to wait and give Zero a chance to explain his actions.\\

* VideoGame/{{Super Robot Wars Z}}2: Saisei-Hen did this with Ougi's decision. [[http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GbMxufJKDqo The other ZEXIS came to support Lelouch and decide to give Ougi another choice: trusting Zero. ]]

* ''{{iCarly}}'': Sam breaking up Carly and Freddie in season 3's ''iSaved Your Life'' by getting it into his head that Carly's feelings were not real. When Sam kissed Freddie in the season 4 finale some accusation fics were written about the idea that Sam's actions prior were because she was hiding her feelings but didn't want Freddie with Carly. Naturally when Carly puts two and two together in these fics they get [[DarkFic dark]].

* The ''WesternAnimation/AvatarTheLastAirBender'' magnum opus ''Stormbenders'' was written by an author who believed Aang wasn't a true hero, that he was selfish and refused to grow up and change and thus painted him as an unsympathetic child. In her view it was ''Zuko'' who was the Real Hero (and more importantly, [[DieForOurShip deserved Katara's love]] [[ShipToShipCombat more]]).

* In ''LiloAndStitchTheSeries'', the titular [[ABoyAndHisX girl and her illegal genetically engineered alien]] are tasked with [[GottaCatchEmAll capturing the other 625 experiments and repurposing them before the bad guys get to them]]. However, some would naturally be caught in order to avert a BoringInvincibleHero. Some fans cried foul about how Lilo appeared to seem to just let some of the captured experiments go. ''[[http://www.fanfiction.net/s/1691952/1/Experiment_166_Fury Experiment 166: Fury]]'' (which may in fact be the first Accusation Fic, [[OlderThanTheyThink depending on how old the genre actually is]]) invents a [[SailorEarth specially-made fan experiment]] that calls Lilo out on this, and at the end the she and the others go and rescue the until-then captured experiments.

* Quite a few fans of ''VeronicaMars'' were, to put it mildly, disappointed with the titular heroine's actions in season 3 (and, to a lesser extent, season 2, particularly its first half), thus fics where Veronica gets called on her attitude, especially concerning [[JerkassWoobie Logan]], are pretty common. Still, it rather rarely goes dark, especially in {{Shipping}} cases.

** This troper ''wrote'' that fanfic and found it very cathartic. As a young fan with no other fans to discuss my beef with, it allowed me to express my frustration with my issue and continue enjoying the show. ... it's still a horrible fanfic, but... yeah.
