*** Though what is known of the man through historical sources seems to indicate him as extremely clever person well versed in social skills and politics, as well as his famed talents in physics and engineering. If the apocryphal story of his death is true, it was most likely because Archimedes knew that he had been ordered to be captured alive, to serve the Roman Empire's intersts, but unfortunately for him, the soldier didn't recognise him.

No way! This was one of the funniest things on the wiki!

This StockCharacter is a brilliant scientist, but very flighty, often forgetting things like the date, [[MyNameIsNotDurwood people's names]], meetings, [[ForgetsToEat eating]], [[DepartmentOfRedundancyDepartment people's names]], etc. Good thing he ([[AlwaysMale and it's very often a he]]) is [[BunnyEarsLawyer good at what he does]] and often has perfect memory for scientific details or [[MouthfulOfPi mathematical values]]. Sometimes he becomes so engrossed in his work that he loses track of his very surroundings. Often overlaps with BunglingInventor.

A subtrope of TheProfessor. Compare also... um... blast it!... ah yes, the MadScientist, who often exhibits this trait. He has colleagues in [[MadMathematician the math department]].

Mustn't forget to look up [[TroperTales/AbsentMindedProfessor Troper Tales]], come to think of it.

Often forgets what city he's in, can't remember the actual names of his lab assistants so he labels them "Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta" and so on (and then get's that mixed up) and if those same lab assistants weren't paid to remind him would often forgets he needs to eat and sleep every so often.

***Actually, Attention Deficit Disorder (AD/HD) describes an inconsistent ability to concentrate. (Neural imaging studies have shown that the disorder is associated with wildly varying levels of neurotransmitters in the part of the brain that coordinates the other parts of the brain.) So this trope is a good predictor of how a male person with AD/HD would behave.

** But isn't this problem the opposite? An attention deficit means an inability to attend to one activity and the constant switching of attention to other things. The problem of 'absent mindedness' is an inability to switch one's attention to more mundane things when concentrating on abstract problems.

*** Assuming the fly didn't simply get run over it would still travel 2.5 miles. The cyclist travelling at 40mph would travel ten miles before the crash and the cyclist travelling at 20mph would travel 5. If the fly is moving at half the speed of the cyclist travelling at 20mph then it must travel half the distance; 2.5 miles. The fly doesn't need to stay in between the bikes.
