* ''Literature/JulianComstock'' and his friend Adam Hazzard are captured by a BountyHunter, who's holding them overnight before handing them over. They notice a nest of snakes has been drawn to the fire he's lit, so draw his attention to them. Naturally the bounty hunter thinks it's a trick until one of the snakes brushes his leg, whereupon he panics and starts shooting, using up all his ammunition. Adam knocks him unconscious, whereupon Julian says that was supposed to be ''his'' job while Adam dealt with the snakes (Adam was raised in a snake-handling sect). Adam replies that they're just corn snakes, which aren't venomous.

* ''Literature/TheTrialsOfApollo'' features a use of this trope by Apollo in ''The Dark Prophecy'' that works especially well, since the ones he tricks are very gullible and slow to turn around. Apollo then goes further to thoroughly [[LampshadeHanging lampshade]] how this trope is apparently OlderThanDirt, stating that it was first recorded on Mesopotamian clay tablets.

* The web novel ''Literature/ThroughTheMotions'' [[ZigZaggingTrope goes back and forth]] on this: a customer tries to get Deanna to look out the window as he tries to steal some gum. She recognizes it as an obvious trick and keeps an eye on him while the next customer in line, as well as one of her co-workers, takes the bait. It's only ''after'' the would-be thief leaves the store that she turns around and finds out that he wasn't lying: [[spoiler:she sees the customer who left ahead of him using magic to protect herself from a heavy rainstorm]].
