* FlatCharacter: Mateo Mandelson himself. Despite being the titular character, he mainly serves as an AudienceSurrogate for the conflict between the various groups of Sigil Holders he encounters. It's even more apparent once [[spoiler:Cassius siphons him of his half of the Red Star]], as the story shifts focus from Mateo and his friends to the bigger picture surrounding Cassius and his history with [[spoiler:Perseus]] and other Sigil Holders, with Mateo being a bystander. It doesn't help that, while we get to know tons about [[spoiler:his family members]], we never really get to know anything about Mateo himself. We know he's fighting to avenge his school and struggles with his sigil slowly corrupting him, but that's just about it.

* OnlyOneName: Most characters fall under this. Considering there ''are'' characters with full names (i.e. Mateo Mandelson, Killian [=McCormick=], Oliver Modeston, etc.), it can be presumed those who've only had their first names revealed ''do'' have surnames, but they just go unrevealed since there's no real reason for them to be.

* {{Superhero}}: Deconstructed. Sigil Holders are superheroes in all but name, being people in colorful outfits with supernatural powers. However, prolonged use of the powers holders' sigils grant them end up corrupting their minds more and more. As a result, most Sigil Holders in the story proper are bloodthirsty, borderline insane people who're very irresponsible with their abilities, and often cause more harm for regular civilians than good. Mateo himself starts out as a bona fide superhero, but his overreliance on his powers gradually corrupt him and make him much more irrational and violent as the story goes on.
* UrbanFantasy: It's like this for a short time, with Mateo and Uncle Percy fighting against the machinations of Nocturne in the streets of Vertigo City, but abandons this for something more unconventional and esoteric after [[spoiler:Cassius tells Mateo the truth about the Red Star, takes Mateo's half of it, and abandons Nocturne to hunt down his fellow Sigil Holders for theirs]].

* RandomEventsPlot: The first ten chapters are a rather generic story about a KidHero defending his city from the machinations of a NebulousEvilOrganization. But once said hero [[spoiler:loses his powers to said organization's leader]], the story devolves into a {{Gorn}}-infested romp involving ''dozens'' of characters wreaking havoc for the sheer sake of it. And this goes one for ''fifty chapters straight'' until Andromeda is finally namedropped and the race to vanquish her begins.

* RandomEventsPlot: The first ten chapters are a rather generic story about a KidHero defending his city from the machinations of a NebulousEvilOrganization.

Cassius and Perseus snap Andromeda's statue in half, causing her mural to shatter, vanquishing the wicked being before her sigils could ever infect the world, and inadvertently killing Cetus before he could ever be a threat by erasing the Clear Conscience from existence. Cassius and Perseus, finally making up and realizing the errors of their ways, continue their lives as salarymen; Melissa and Murdoch get together and have Mateo and Molly; and Gorgophone, Andromeda's daughter and now the only being to have a sigil, uses her powers to help those in need around the world. They went through hell and back, but in the end, it was worth it.]]

The Letters' leader (and "father") is Cetus, the CEO of Ceto Industries, the company Cassius worked for before he ever has a sigil. And Cetus is the first person Andromeda--the creator of the sigils, the mother of the Letters, and the true BigBad of the story--gave a sigil to (and the first person she takes a sigil back from).
