Helen Hamilton is a teenager growing up Nantucket Island in New England who's always been different, and always tried to ignore that fact. However, in addition to being faster and stronger than she really should be, lately she's started having these vivid dreams of wandering in a desert or by a stream, and the day after she always wakes up with cuts and dirt on her feet.
