* Introdump: Used in the snippet of writing we see of Skraelin, which is constantly explaining who and what the characters are and what's going on, even though it's supposedly in the middle of the story. Skraelin is supposed to be a bad writer, but it's probably not a parody of the trope. Skrealin's reader wouldn't need that information to know what's going on, but readers of ''Readme'' don't have any context, so they ''do''.

A new computer virus ('REAMDE') has emerged which encrypts its victims' home directories. In order to get them back, one has to enter the virtual world of ''T'Rain'', an MMORPG founded by [[DraftDodging draft-dodger]] and former drug-runner Richard "Dodge" Forthrast, and leave a ransom of gold at such-and-such coordinates.

Enter Zula Forthrast, Richard's twice-orphaned adopted niece. Richard, discovering that she has a major in geology and a minor in computer science, offers her a job programming magma simulations for T'Rain. Zula and her boyfriend, Peter, head to British Columbia to meet with Richard and discuss specifics. There, Peter, a security consultant by trade, sells a list of stolen credit card numbers to Wallace, a mysterious Scottish-Canadian accountant.

Later, Zula and Peter find out that REAMDE has infected Wallace's laptop, rendering the single remaining copy of the list inaccessible. Furthermore, Wallace was working for a [[TheMafiya Mafiya]] man named Ivanov, and he's very unhappy about the situation...
