* RousingSpeech: At Velvet's urging, Sun sends out one to the people of Vacuo, urging them to fight against the Crown.

Most of this is not the trope. This needs to be something completely unheroic and heinous that makes the hero look like a villain. The brutal treatment of Velvet is the only example here, so I've kept it and expanded it.

* RightfulKingReturns: [[spoiler: The Crown's goal is to restore the kingdom's ancient monarchy, with the Asturias twins claiming royal lineage. It's anyone's guess whether their claim was legitimate or not, and it's a moot point anyway, as Vacuo has moved on past kings.]].
* SarcasticDevotee: Scarlet (understandably) is sick of Sun constantly running off and doing his own thing when he's supposed to be the leader of their team and is abjectly refusing to own up to his mistakes and apologise, so almost all of their interactions have an undercurrent of snark and venom from Scarlet picking at Sun's numerous failings, as a leader and a friend.

* RightfulKingReturns: [[spoiler: The history classes talk about a time when monarchs ruled Vacuo, but detail is sparse because so much of Vacuo's history has been lost. However, every so often, people show up claiming descent from the ancient kings. Vacuans generally don't care about these sorts of people; they're too busy trying to survive the present. He's also upset with the way Sun refuses to own up to acknowledge his mistakes and apologise, so almost apologise. Almost all of their interactions have an undercurrent of snark and venom from involve Scarlet picking at using venomous snark to pick on Sun's numerous failings, failings as both a leader and a friend.

* WhatTheHellHero: All over the place. Velvet, Scarlet, and Coco call out Sun for not listening to his team, Sun calls out the Beacon Brigade for not dedicating itself to Vacuo (which gets him called out in turn by people who say it's helping them cope), Nebula's entire team including her friend Octavia gives it to her and Rumpole for bullying Velvet, and Yatsu calls out Fox when he takes their interrogation of Neptune too far.

Reality Ensues misuse (Sun's lack of understanding about why his team continues to be upset with him is the narrative point of their team's story, so there's no 'reality' ensuing to break the narrative intention; the original show also makes it clear that Sun abandoning his team is a really bad thing for a leader to do but they're Put On A Bus — the story exploring why that makes him a bad leader therefore occurs in this novel; that's not Reality Ensues, that's separating out the side characters from the original show's primary plot).

* RealityEnsues:
** Why Sun was expecting his team to be okay with him constantly abandoning them on a whim and that they would just go right back to normal after being apart for nearly a year is anyone's guess.
** Sun being InnocentlyInsensitive and getting involved in his friend's lives (particularly Blake's) whether they want it or not was usually played as adorable and well-meaning in the show. Here, it leads to a rift in his team as they feel he's just doing what he sees as best without listening to them or what they want.

The characters don't know that, however, so there's no narrative set up for the Hypocrite trope. It's not enough for the audience to see hypocrisy, it has to be established in the story, too. It's not Aesop Anemia, he thought just going back to his team and taking them to Vacuo would be enough to fix things and doesn't understand that the issues run much deeper and require far more of an effort from him to solve until things blow up. Both Sides Have A Point misuse (the trope requires the person 'in the middle' to accept both sides have point without becoming part of the solution for the issue or taking either side; Sun comes down on Vacuo's side for most of the story because he doesn't get the point of the group and is uncomfortable dealing with it; that's not this trope). Breaking The Fellowship misuse (the situation is far too temporary and quickly resolved for this trope). Informed Flaw misuse and written as complaining; she has a judgemental opinion that her own team-mates think is harsh; so it's an in-universe opinion, not the novel trying to establish it as a fully accurate fact. The two teams get better opinions of each other as the story progresses. Taken Mistreatment Induced Betrayal to the Discussion Page.

* AdaptationalJerkass: In the series proper, Sun is often rather carefree and supportive with his worst quality being that he's InnocentlyInsensitive at times, being described by Blake as very earnest, and even coming to the conclusion that while he had done it to help Blake, his running off on his team made him a horrible leader, leading to him deciding to go to Vacuo with his team to try and improve. Here, Sun is ignorant and dismissive of his teams issues with him, and repeatedly demonstrates NeverMyFault over his running off and thinking the team just needs to get over their issues with him. It takes having the issues spelt out to him by Velvet for him to finally realize how shitty he's been to his team. It also makes him look like a {{hypocrite}}, as in Volume 4 he told Blake that she can't make her friends choices for them and has to stop pushing them away, yet Sun is described as being incapable of staying in one place for too long out of fear of growing attachments, leading him to constantly running away from places, including his old home of Vacuo, and pushing his friends away in the process.
* AesopAmnesia: At the beginning of Volume 6, Sun decides to take his team to Vacuo due to, as he explains to Blake, coming to the realization he's been a horrible leader to his team and wanting to improve. Here, Sun is largely ignorant as to why his team is frustrated with him, and displays numerous moments of NeverMyFault thinking they're just being unreasonable and should get over it, specifically whenever Scarlet calls him out ''for being'' a horrible leader.
* AndNowForSomeoneCompletelyDifferent: [[spoiler:Much like the last book, the story jumps between the viewpoints of the members of team CFVY and SSSN (except [[OutOfFocus Sage]]) throughout; until the third act where Jax and Gillian Asturias - the two halves of the Crown - become viewpoint characters as well.]]
* BothSidesHaveAPoint: The Beacon Brigade. Sun points out that it comes off as elitist to the Vacuan students and another way for the newcomers to set themselves apart from Shade, while the Brigade itself points out that the students in it come from all three schools including Shade and that "Beacon" is less an attachment to their previous school and more symbolism of how they all share the experience of the Battle of Beacon. It's eventually resolved once they help to defend Shade, proving their loyalty to it.
* BrainwashedAndCrazy: Many of the Crownsmen. [[spoiler: Professor Rumpole, Sun, Velvet, and Yatsuhashi are all brainwashed into working for Jax over the course of the story. Yatsu's Semblance is the only effective measure in breaking it, including him using it ''on himself'' to break Jax's control]].
* BreakingTheFellowship: The students are shocked when Theodore announces the dissolution of all teams, with a Reinitation to form new ones. Velvet in particular is distressed to be separated from Team [=CFVY=], while Scarlet hopes it will resolve Team [=SSSN=]'s conflict. [[spoiler:It's a gambit by Rumpole to dissolve the morale at Shade Academy by breaking up established teams and putting together ill-fitting ones]].
* CultureClash: The original Vacuan students and the refugees from Beacon and Haven have quite a bit of tension, thanks to both the traditional (and well-earned) dislike of outsiders from Vacuo and their assumption that the new students are keeping themselves apart and not truly committed to Vacuo.
* DividedWeFall: The team reshuffling plan, [[spoiler:as executed by a brainwashed Professor Rumpole]]. The announcement is sudden and subtly places the blame on the newcomers for the change, makes sure that the leaders of the new teams are inexperienced and fighting with former leaders, mixes up the years so that upperclassmen resent lowerclassmen in their teams and lowerclassmen feel useless, and thanks to what's heavily implied to be Crown moles in the crowd, nearly every team is poorly balanced, resentful, and ill-matched. It was made to undermine Shade Academy's defenses, and it almost works.

It also makes him look like a {{hypocrite}}, as in Volume 4 he told Blake that she can't make her friends choices for them and has to stop pushing them oaway, yet Sun is described as being incapable of staying in one place for too long out of fear of growing attachments, leading him to constantly running away from places, including his old home of Vacuo, and pushing his friends away in the process.
