* TyrantTakesTheHelm: When Tom Scott takes over the police department in ''Christmas Cookie Murder'', he pushes a zero tolerance drug policy on the town using every opportunity available to push his agenda. It's acknowledged that Tom's initiatives aren't actually helping anyone, to the point of totally derailing an annual toy giveaway the department does for needy children. [[spoiler:And this is before he's exposed as a coconspirator in the drug market flooding Tinker's Cove.]]

* DrugsAreBad: Subverted in ''Christmas Cookie Murder''.
** Tinker's Cove is apparently being flooded with drugs, and Lucy's not happy to learn Toby's been smoking pot when he should be working on his college applications. However, while Lucy and Bill are concerned and get Toby to stop, the book avoids getting too heavy handed about it and treats it more as serious irresponsibility than a debilitating addiction which could ruin his life.
** Meanwhile, new police chief Tom Scott's zero tolerance anti-drug initiatives are lambasted for being too excessive. He hijacks a department Santa Claus program to distribute a bunch of anti-drug coloring books to underprivileged children who were genuinely looking forward to the toys and gifts Santa (Barney Culpepper) usually hands out. Elizabeth is almost suspended for two weeks because she lent her inhaler (a "controlled substance") to help a classmate having a bad asthma attack. [[spoiler:And then it's revealed Tom's a massive hypocrite who is heavily involved in the drugs flowing into town, having murdered Tucker because she knew too much.

* WhereDidWeGoWrong: Andrea in ''Christmas Cookie Murder'' is embarrassed about her son Tim being arrested for drunk driving. While she initially brags about the full sports scholarship he received to a nearby college, she starts crying out of fear the other moms at the cookie exchange as judging her for her son's behavior, as if she or her husband did something to him to explain his behavior. She states she raised Tim like any other child, and has no idea how that still led to him driving while intoxicated and getting arrested for it.

* FromBadToWorse: The cookie exchange in ''Christmas Cookie Murder'' starts off awkward when Steffi arrives early for the sake of handing out pamphlets to raise awareness of drunk driving. Then the arriving moms start talking about which of their kids got accepted into what college, with Steffi making an anti-Semitic comment. Then Lee arrives using the exchange to vent about her husband being a bastard before she accuses Tucker of stealing her cookie recipe. And then Andrea breaks down in tears because her son Tim was arrested for drunk driving and she thinks the others are judging her. And ''then'' the clogged upstairs toilet leads to a pipe breaking and all the cookies being destroyed in the ensuing water damage.
